UK slot rules

Online slots in Great Britain are more tightly regulated than almost anywhere else. These are the rules that shape every game at a UK-licensed casino.

Key takeaways

  • Maximum stake: £5 a spin, or £2 for ages 18 to 24.
  • At least 2.5 seconds between spins; no autoplay.
  • Bonus buy is not offered to UK players.
  • Bonus wagering is capped at 10x.

The rules in order

  1. 2021Autoplay removed from online slots and a minimum of 2.5 seconds set between spins.
  2. April 2025Stakes capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over.
  3. May 2025Stakes capped at £2 a spin for players aged 18 to 24.
  4. 19 January 2026Bonus wagering capped at 10x; offers can no longer span two products.

Stake limits

The limits apply to online slots only, not to other casino games. They cap how much can be lost per spin and, with the speed rule, per minute.

Game design rules

  • No autoplay. Every spin needs a deliberate press.
  • Spin speed. A game cycle must last at least 2.5 seconds.
  • No turbo or slam-stop. Features that speed play or give an illusion of control are not allowed.
  • No false wins. A return below your stake cannot be celebrated as a win.
  • Session information. Net position and time played must be visible.

Bonus buy

Paying a multiple of your stake to enter a feature directly is not offered in Britain. Slots that are built around it elsewhere, such as Sweet Bonanza and Gates of Olympus, run here without it. If a review or video shows a buy button, it is not the UK version.

Bonus rules

Since 19 January 2026, wagering on any bonus is capped at ten times the bonus, and a promotion cannot require play on more than one product. For slot players this is why so many welcome spins are now wager-free. See the slot bonuses page.

Age, identity and payment

  • You must be 18 or over, and verified before you can play, including demo games.
  • Credit cards cannot be used for gambling.
  • Every online licensee must take part in GAMSTOP self-exclusion.
  • Deposit limits and time-outs must be offered.

What unlicensed sites offer instead

Sites without a Gambling Commission licence advertise the things UK rules remove: bonus buys, autoplay, higher stakes, credit card deposits. They also remove every protection, including any route to recover unpaid winnings. We list only UK-licensed slot sites.
