What kind of game the Deadwood slot is
Deadwood takes its name from the frontier town in the Dakota Territory and leans fully into the outlaw story: a dusty main street, wanted posters, a sheriff’s badge and a cast of gunslingers on the high-paying symbols. The music and sound effects stay tense rather than cheerful, and gunfire accompanies the wild animations. It belongs with the darker end of western slots, not the cartoon saloon style.
Mechanically it is a Nolimit City xNudge game. Almost everything interesting happens through tall wilds that slide into view and gain multipliers on the way, and the bonus round asks you to make a real choice between two different ways of using those wilds. The developer lists the RTP at 96.03% by default and the cap at 13,950 times the base bet.
Deadwood reels: 3-4-4-4-3 and 576 ways
The five reels are uneven: three rows on the outer reels and four rows on the three middle reels. Multiplying those heights gives 3 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 3 = 576 ways, and every way pays left to right for matching symbols on adjacent reels. There are no paylines to choose and the way count stays fixed, which keeps the maths easier to follow than the expanding grids found in some of the studio’s later releases.
Nolimit City lists a hit frequency of 40.17%, the highest in this group of Nolimit reviews. In practice that means about two spins in five return something, though a large share of those returns are smaller than the stake and the game, as UK rules require, won’t celebrate them as wins.
Hunter xNudge wilds, with a worked example
The Hunter wild is four positions tall. When one lands only partly on a middle reel, it nudges up or down until the whole wild is visible, and every nudge adds 1 to its multiplier. If more than one multiplied wild forms part of the same win, their multipliers are added together rather than multiplied.
Here is how that plays out on a 20p stake. A wild lands with one cell showing and nudges three times to fill reel 3, finishing at x4. A second wild on reel 4 nudges twice and finishes at x3. A premium symbol win that would normally pay £1.00 passing through both wilds is multiplied by 4 + 3 = 7, paying £7.00. Had they multiplied together it would be x12, which is why reading the help screen matters before you assume a figure.
Exact symbol values vary with your stake; open the paytable in the game to see what each line of five pays at your bet.
Sheriff badges and the Shoot Out feature
Two Sheriff badges landing in the same spin start a Shoot Out. The low symbols, from the ace down to the 10, on the middle reels all turn wild for that spin. Because low symbols are the most common symbols on the reels, this can fill much of the centre of the grid with wilds at once, and any premium symbols on the outer reels then connect through it.
In the base game a Shoot Out is the most likely route to a sizeable win outside free spins. Its value still depends on what lands on reels 1 and 5, so a Shoot Out with only low symbols on the edges can pay very little.
Hunter Spins vs Gunslinger Spins: which to pick
Three scatters trigger the bonus and open a choice screen. Both options start with 8 free spins, but they spend the game’s value in different ways.
Mode
Spins
What happens
Feel
Hunter Spins
8
At least one nudging Hunter wild lands on the middle reels on every spin
Steadier; more wins, each one smaller on average
Gunslinger Spins
8
A win multiplier stays active for the whole round and grows with each wild nudge, with no upper limit
Swingier; slow start, but late spins can be worth far more
Shoot Out Free Spins
8
Either mode, with low symbols on the middle reels acting as wild
The upgraded version of both
The published RTP covers the game as a whole, and neither option is a way around the house edge. The choice is about the shape of the outcome you prefer. A sensible way to decide:
Check your remaining session budget before choosing.
If you would rather see a steady return from the bonus, take Hunter Spins.
If you accept that the round may pay little in exchange for a chance at a much larger multiplied result, take Gunslinger Spins.
Stick to the same choice for a whole session so that one result doesn’t start to feel like a pattern.
Remember that the next bonus is just as random whichever you picked last time.
As an example of how Gunslinger builds, if wilds nudge five times across the first four spins, every win in the last four spins carries at least that accumulated boost on top of the base multiplier. If no wilds nudge early, the round can finish with almost nothing.
Shoot Out Free Spins: the upgraded bonus
Landing three scatters together with two Sheriff badges sends you to Shoot Out Free Spins: you still choose Hunter or Gunslinger, but low symbols on the middle reels act as wilds throughout. Two badges landing during an ordinary bonus can also upgrade it on the spot. This is the version of the bonus with the biggest potential, because a centre packed with wilds combined with multiplied nudges is how the larger results are built.

The cap is modest by the studio’s standards, which suits players who find six-figure multipliers meaningless anyway. Our guide to RTP explains why the average return rarely matches a single session, and variance explains why it can stray so far.
Deadwood for UK players: limits and removed extras
In Great Britain the feature buy is switched off, so the bonus is reached only by scatters. Stakes are capped at £5 per spin from age 25 and £2 per spin for 18–24s; spins take at least 2.5 seconds, with no autoplay or turbo. You can try a free demo at UK-licensed sites after age verification. Our UK slot game design rules guide covers why the game looks and behaves slightly differently here.
Tombstone RIP is Nolimit City’s more extreme western, with a far higher cap and an Insane rating. Wanted Dead or a Wild has a similar ceiling to Deadwood with a higher listed RTP, while Dead or Alive 2 uses classic sticky wilds on nine lines. Deadwood’s selling point is the bonus choice.
Deadwood pros, cons and who it suits
Advantages

xNudge wild maths is clear and easy to follow
Highest hit frequency of the Nolimit City games reviewed here
Shoot Out adds base-game variety

Default RTP 96.03% may be lower at some casinos
Deadwood suits adults who like westerns and want a bonus decision that matters, without the huge multiplier chases of the studio’s Insane-rated games.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of the Deadwood slot?
Deadwood’s default RTP is 96.03%, as published by Nolimit City, giving a theoretical house edge of 3.97%. On 250 spins at 20p, or £50 staked, the average expected loss would be about £1.99, but actual results spread widely around that because the game is rated Extreme volatility. Some casinos run lower RTP versions of the same game, so check the info screen at your casino. Our guide on finding a slot’s RTP shows where the figure appears.
Should I choose Hunter Spins or Gunslinger Spins?
Neither option is a way to beat the house edge, so pick the style of round you prefer. Hunter Spins put at least one nudging Hunter wild on the middle reels every spin, which tends to produce more frequent, moderate wins. Gunslinger Spins give a multiplier that lasts for the whole round and grows with every nudge, so early nudges can make later wins worth much more, while a slow start can leave you with very little. Neither option beats the house edge. Read how multipliers work for the maths.
How do you trigger free spins on Deadwood?
Three scatter symbols trigger Deadwood’s free spins, after which you choose Hunter Spins or Gunslinger Spins, each with 8 spins. If two Sheriff badges land alongside the three scatters, you get the upgraded Shoot Out version, where low symbols on the middle reels act as wilds. Nolimit City puts the average trigger rate at about 1 in 197 spins. The feature buy isn’t offered in Great Britain, so scatters are the only route. Our scatter symbol page explains how scatters pay and trigger.
What is the max win on Deadwood?
Deadwood’s maximum win is 13,950 times your stake, according to Nolimit City. That is £1,395 on a 10p spin, £2,790 on 20p and £69,750 on the UK maximum of £5 for players aged 25 and over. It is most likely to come from a Shoot Out bonus with heavily multiplied wilds, and in practice almost no session reaches it. Compared with many of the studio’s later games the cap is modest, which suits some players. See our list of high max win slots for context.
What does the Sheriff badge do in Deadwood?
Two Sheriff badges in one spin trigger a Shoot Out, which turns all the low symbols, from the ace down to the 10, on the middle reels into wilds for that spin. The developer’s summary places the badges on the first and fifth reels, so the feature connects the edges of the grid through a block of wilds. In free spins, two badges upgrade the round to Shoot Out Free Spins, which keeps low symbols on the middle reels wild. Our page on expanding wilds covers similar mechanics.
Is Deadwood the same as Tombstone?
No. Deadwood and Tombstone RIP are separate Nolimit City games that share a Wild West setting and the studio’s style of tall, nudging wilds. Deadwood came out in 2020 with a 13,950x cap and Extreme volatility; Tombstone RIP followed in January 2022 with a 300,000x cap and an Insane rating. Tombstone RIP is far more extreme, with rarer, larger results. If Deadwood’s bonus choice appeals, it is the gentler of the two. Read our Tombstone RIP review for a direct look.
Why does Deadwood pay so often but still feel volatile?
Nolimit City lists a 40.17% hit frequency, so roughly two spins in five pay something, but many of those payouts are smaller than the stake. That is why the balance can still fall steadily even while wins keep appearing. Most of the game’s return is concentrated in multiplied wild combinations and the free spins, which is what makes it Extreme volatility. UK rules stop the game celebrating returns below the stake. Our page on losses disguised as wins explains the effect.
Can I play Deadwood on my phone?
Yes. Deadwood is built in HTML5, as Nolimit City’s games are, so it runs in a mobile browser or inside a casino’s app at UK-licensed sites that carry it. The layout scales to portrait or landscape and the controls work the same way, with the same stake limits and 2.5-second minimum spin time. Your casino account, balance and safer gambling limits are shared between mobile and desktop. Our mobile slots page explains what to expect on smaller screens.
