Max bet rule

The max bet rule is a bonus term that sets the largest stake you may place per spin while bonus money is active, for example £5. Break it and the casino can remove bonus winnings, so it is one of the first lines to read before you accept any slots offer.

Key takeaways

  • The max bet rule caps your stake per spin only while a bonus is active.
  • It sits on top of the legal limits: £5 a spin for over-25s, £2 for 18–24s.
  • Breaking it usually costs bonus winnings, not your own deposit.
  • UK guidance says casinos should block over-limit bets where the software can.

What the max bet rule is

When a casino gives you bonus funds, it attaches a ceiling to the size of each bet you make until the bonus is finished or forfeited. That ceiling is the max bet rule. It is usually expressed per spin for slots, such as ‘maximum bet £5 while a bonus is active’, and sometimes as a percentage of the bonus.

The rule protects the casino against a particular pattern: placing a few very large bets with bonus money to chase one big win, then withdrawing if it lands. A stake ceiling forces bonus play to look like ordinary play, spread over many smaller spins. It applies to your total bet per spin, not the coin value, so a 20-line slot at 25p a line is a £5 stake.

These are two separate caps and it is easy to blur them. The legal stake limit is set by the Gambling Commission and applies to every online slot spin in Great Britain, bonus or no bonus: £5 for players aged 25 and over since 9 April 2025, and £2 for players aged 18 to 24 since 21 May 2025. A bonus stake cap, by contrast, is a promotional term chosen by the casino, and it can be lower than the legal limit.

18–24£2£5£2

The rule of thumb: whichever figure is lower wins. A £5 bonus cap gives an 18–24-year-old no extra room, because the law already stops them at £2. Our UK online slot stake limits guide covers how casinos apply the age bands.

How players break the max bet rule without meaning to

Most breaches are accidental. These are the usual routes:

  • Switching to a different slot where the default stake is higher than the one you were using.
  • Using a slot’s ante bet or enhanced-feature option, which raises the cost per spin above the base bet you selected.
  • Taking a gamble feature on a win, which some terms treat as a separate wager or ban outright during bonus play.
  • Forgetting the bonus is still active after a good run and raising the stake as the balance grows.

Feature buys are not offered in Great Britain, so the large one-off ‘buy bonus’ bet that trips players up elsewhere is not a risk here; see bonus buy for why.

What happens if you exceed the max bet

The usual penalty is the loss of the bonus and any winnings made with it. Your deposit balance should not be touched: UK fair-terms guidance says promotional restrictions must not apply while you play with your own deposit funds, and where a stake cap applies to deposit play, the software itself must stop you exceeding it rather than letting you place the bet and penalising you later.

That guidance also lists maximum stake size among the significant terms that must be shown clearly before you accept. If a casino voids winnings for a stake breach that its own system allowed, and the cap was not shown prominently, you may have grounds to complain. Our page on why a slot win might be voided covers the other common causes.

Max bet rule worked example

Here is a step-by-step look at a typical bonus with a £5 cap, using Casumo’s published welcome terms as the model: a 50% bonus on a £200 first deposit gives £100 of bonus, to be wagered 10x (£1,000) within 7 days, with a maximum bet of £5 while the bonus is active. 18+, opt-in required, game, play and payment restrictions apply.

  1. At the £5 ceiling, £1,000 of wagering takes at least 200 spins. At £1 it takes 1,000 spins.
  2. At the UK minimum of 2.5 seconds a spin, 200 spins is a little over 8 minutes of reel time, and 1,000 spins about 42 minutes, before any feature rounds.
  3. If you are 18–24, the legal £2 limit makes the minimum 500 spins, roughly 21 minutes of spinning.
  4. A single £6 spin would breach the rule, even if every other spin was within it.

Nothing in the cap changes the expected cost of the wagering, which depends on turnover and RTP, not stake size. Higher stakes simply get there in fewer, more volatile spins.

Frequently asked questions

What is the max bet rule on a casino bonus?

It is the largest single stake you are allowed to place while bonus funds are active, written into the promotion’s terms. On slots it is set per spin, commonly £5 or less at UK casinos. It stops players using bonus money for a few very large bets. The rule ends when the bonus is completed, forfeited or expires. It is separate from the legal stake limit, and the lower of the two applies. For more on bonus terms in general, see how to use a slots bonus.

Does the max bet rule apply to free spins?

Usually not in the same way, because free spins are pre-set at a fixed value, such as 10p each, and you cannot change it. The offers from Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO all use 10p spins with no wagering, so there is no stake decision to get wrong. A stake cap becomes relevant when free spin winnings are converted into bonus money with wagering attached, and you then choose your own stake while clearing it. Our spin value entry explains how fixed-value spins are priced.

Will I lose my deposit if I break the max bet rule?

You should not. UK guidance says restrictions on promotions must not apply when you play with your own deposit balance, so the usual penalty is the removal of bonus funds and winnings made with them. Deposit money should remain withdrawable. Where a cap does apply to deposit play, the casino’s software is expected to block bets above it. If you believe a casino has taken deposit funds over a stake breach, raise it with support first, then follow how to complain to a slot site.

Is the max bet rule the same as the £5 stake limit?

No, they are different rules that sometimes share a number. The £5 per spin limit for players aged 25 and over, and £2 for those aged 18 to 24, is set by the Gambling Commission and applies to all online slots. The max bet rule is a promotional term set by each casino and applies only while a bonus is active. It can match the legal limit or be lower. Our UK slot rules page explains the legal side, and should you bet max covers stake choice more broadly.

Does a slot’s ante bet count towards the max bet?

Yes, in most terms the figure that counts is the full cost of the spin, including any ante or enhanced-feature charge. If your base bet is £4 and the ante adds 25%, the spin costs £5, which sits right at a £5 cap; a £4.50 base bet with the same ante would breach it. Check the stake display, which shows the total, before spinning. The ante bet entry explains how these options raise the price of each spin and what they change in the maths.

Why do casinos have a max bet rule?

It stops bonus money being used for a handful of oversized bets aimed at one large win, which would undermine the bonus maths. With a cap in place, clearing wagering requires many ordinary-sized spins, so the house edge applies as intended. The rule also nudges bonus play towards normal stakes, which sits more comfortably with UK safer gambling expectations. Its effect on expected cost is small; that is set by turnover and house edge. See slot bankroll management for picking a stake that suits your budget.
