UK online slot stake limits explained simply: if you are 25 or over, no online slot can take more than £5 per spin, and if you are 18 to 24 the limit is £2. The caps came in during spring 2025 and apply at every UK-licensed site. Below we show what counts towards the limit, what it means per hour and how it interacts with bonuses.
The £5 cap (age 25+) started on 9 April 2025 and the £2 cap (age 18–24) on 21 May 2025.
The limit applies to the total cost of one spin, not the coin value or the line bet.
Your verified date of birth decides which cap you get; it moves to £5 once you turn 25.
Even at the cap, a 96% RTP slot played quickly can cost well over £100 an hour on average, so the legal maximum is not a sensible target.

UK online slot stake limits explained: the two caps
Great Britain now has a legal ceiling on how much a single online slot spin can cost. For anyone aged 25 or over the ceiling is £5. For anyone aged 18 to 24 it is £2. A UK-licensed casino must stop you placing a bigger spin, whatever the game and whatever its own settings would otherwise allow.
Before 2025 there was no statutory limit on online slot stakes at all. Each game and casino set its own maximum, and those were often far above £5. The change brought online slots closer to the rules for land-based gaming machines, where the most widely discussed machines in betting shops were cut to a £2 maximum stake in April 2019. For the full list of current rules, including spin speed and bonus caps, see our overview of UK slot rules.

Where the stake limits came from
The limits were one of the headline measures in the government's review of the Gambling Act 2005. The review's white paper, published in April 2023, said online slots needed a stake limit because play is fast, continuous and available at any time. A public consultation that year tested a range of possible caps between £2 and £15, plus a lower limit for young adults.
The government confirmed £5 and £2 in February 2024, and the limits were brought in during 2025 in two stages so operators could update their systems. Our explainer on the Gambling Act review and online slots follows the rest of that story.

The lower limit for young adults reflects evidence that people in their late teens and early twenties are more vulnerable to gambling harm. We explain the reasoning in more depth in why there is a £2 slot limit for under-25s.
What counts towards the £5 or £2 limit
The cap applies to the full cost of one spin, sometimes called the total bet. That is the amount taken from your balance when you press spin. It is not the coin value and it is not the bet per line.
This matters because slot bet settings can be confusing. A game might show a coin value of 10p, a bet level of 5 and 10 lines. Multiply them and the spin costs £5. Another game might show a stake of £2 but add an optional extra bet that raises the real cost to £2.50. If you are under 25, that £2.50 spin would breach the limit, so the game should not let you place it.
Line bet × number of lines: a 25-line game at 20p per line costs £5 per spin.
Coin value × coins × lines: check the total, which most UK games now show clearly next to the spin button.
Optional extra bets such as an ante bet: the extra cost is part of the spin, so the whole amount must fit under the cap.
Bonus-funded spins: a stake paid from bonus money is still a stake on an online slot, so the same limit applies.
Promotional free spins: these come with a fixed value, such as 10p, which is well below either cap.
Feature buys are not offered to players in Great Britain, so you cannot get around the limit by paying a large one-off sum to enter a bonus round.
How a casino knows which stake limit applies to you
Every UK casino has to confirm your age before you can deposit or play, including free demo games. That check records your date of birth, and the casino uses it to set your stake limit. The page on age checks on slot sites explains how that verification works.
When you turn 25, your verified date of birth means the £5 limit should apply. You do not need to request it. If a game still restricts you to £2 after your birthday, contact the casino's support team, as there may be a delay in a particular game updating.
Using someone else's account to get a higher limit, or letting a younger person use yours, breaks the casino's terms and can lead to the account being closed and winnings withheld. Accounts are personal, and the limit follows the verified person who owns them.
What the stake limits mean per hour of play
A per-spin limit sounds modest, but slots are quick. UK rules require at least 2.5 seconds per spin, which still allows up to 1,440 spins an hour if you press continuously. Many people play more slowly, so the table uses 600 spins an hour as a more typical pace, and a 96% RTP, meaning the average cost of play is 4% of the amount staked.

At the maximum pace of 1,440 spins, a £5 player would stake £7,200 in an hour, with an average cost of £288 at 96% RTP. A £2 player at the same pace would stake £2,880, with an average cost of £115.20. These are long-run averages. In a single hour you could finish well ahead or lose far more, especially on high volatility slots, where the swings are larger.
How stake limits change a slot's max win in pounds
Slot max wins are quoted as a multiple of the stake, so the cap on stakes also caps the largest possible prize in pounds. A game with a 5,000x max win could pay up to £25,000 on a £5 spin, or £10,000 on a £2 spin. The odds of reaching that ceiling are tiny in either case; most players will never see it.

Progressive jackpots are different, because their prize is a pool rather than a multiple. Some jackpot games require a minimum stake or give a better chance at higher stakes, and under-25s may find those rules matter more. The mechanics are set out in how progressive jackpots work. The full maths of max wins is covered in slot max win explained.
Stake limits, bonus max bet rules and 10x wagering
Bonuses add a second limit on top of the legal one. Most deposit bonuses carry a max bet rule, and breaking it can void the bonus. Casumo's welcome bonus, for example, sets a maximum of £5 per bet while the bonus is active, which matches the legal cap for over-25s but is irrelevant for under-25s, who are already limited to £2.
Since 19 January 2026, wagering on any UK casino bonus is capped at 10 times. Here is how stake size changes the work involved. A £100 bonus with 10x wagering means £1,000 of slot stakes before the bonus converts. At £2 per spin that is 500 spins; at £5 it is 200 spins; at 50p it is 2,000 spins. Smaller stakes take longer but spread the risk across more spins. Our wagering examples page works through more cases.
What the online slot stake limits do not cover
The £5 and £2 limits are specific to online slot games. They do not set stakes for other online casino games such as roulette, blackjack or live dealer tables, which have their own maximums set by the operator. Land-based gaming machines in pubs, arcades, bingo halls, betting shops and casinos sit under separate machine category rules.
The limits also do not cap how much you can deposit or lose overall. That is the job of your own deposit limits and the casino's checks on spending, which we cover in the guide to affordability checks on slot sites.
Choosing a stake below the cap
The legal limit is a ceiling, not a recommendation. A stake that suits you depends on your budget, how long you want to play and how swingy the game is.
Decide how much you are prepared to spend on this session and treat it as the cost of entertainment.
Decide roughly how long you want to play, for example one hour.
Estimate spins: at a relaxed pace, around 400 to 600 spins an hour.
Divide your budget by the number of spins, then halve it if the slot is high volatility.
Set the game's total bet to that figure or the nearest lower option, and check the total shown by the spin button.
Set a deposit limit in your account so the session budget cannot quietly grow.
Casumo offers new customers aged 18 or over a 50% bonus up to £100 on a first deposit of at least £20, with the bonus wagered 10x within 7 days and a £5 maximum bet while it is active. 10bet's casino welcome bonus is a 100% match up to £25 for new UK customers, wagered 10x on slots within 3 days, with bonus winnings capped at £1,000. Terms apply to both.
Both offers are deposit matches with 10x wagering, so the stake you choose decides how many spins it takes to clear them. 18+, new customers, terms apply.

Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum bet on online slots in the UK?
The maximum bet on an online slot in the UK is £5 per spin if you are 25 or over, and £2 per spin if you are 18 to 24. These limits apply at every casino licensed by the Gambling Commission and cover the total cost of the spin, including any optional extra bet. The £5 cap took effect on 9 April 2025 and the £2 cap on 21 May 2025. Our answer to how much you can bet on slots in the UK has more examples.
Why is the slot stake limit £2 for under-25s?
The £2 limit for 18 to 24-year-olds reflects evidence that young adults are more likely to experience gambling harm, partly because they tend to have lower and less stable incomes. The government's review of the Gambling Act considered a range of options before settling on £2 for this age group in February 2024. The limit took effect on 21 May 2025. Once your verified date of birth shows you are 25, the £5 limit applies instead. Read more in why there is a £2 slot limit.
Does the stake limit apply to free spins?
Promotional free spins come with a fixed value set by the casino, typically 10p each, which is well under both limits, so the question rarely arises. Free spins inside a slot's bonus round are played at the stake of the spin that triggered them, so they follow the same limit automatically. Spins paid for with bonus money are still stakes on an online slot, so the £5 or £2 cap applies to those too. Our guide to free spins terms explains spin values and conditions.
Do the stake limits apply to roulette and blackjack?
No. The £5 and £2 caps cover online slot games only. Online roulette, blackjack, live casino tables and other casino games have maximum stakes set by the operator and the game supplier rather than by these rules. Those games are, however, covered by the rule that bans autoplay and requires at least 5 seconds per round, which took effect on 17 January 2025. If you want limits on other games too, set them yourself using deposit limits. See how to set deposit limits for the steps.
What happens to my stake limit when I turn 25?
Your stake limit should rise to £5 per spin once your verified date of birth shows you are 25. You do not need to apply for it, because the casino already holds your date of birth from its age checks. If a game still restricts you after your birthday, contact the casino's support team. A higher limit is not a reason to stake more; your budget should still decide your stake. The slot bankroll management guide shows how to size stakes against a budget.
Can a casino let me bet more than £5 a spin on slots?
No UK-licensed casino can let you stake more than £5 on a single online slot spin, whatever your account history or loyalty status. VIP schemes, high-roller rooms and special offers cannot override the limit. A site that offers higher slot stakes to UK players is either breaking its licence conditions or is not licensed in Great Britain at all, which removes the protections you would normally have. Our guide on how to spot unlicensed slot sites explains the warning signs.
How much can you lose in an hour at the £5 limit?
There is no fixed answer, because results vary, but the average cost gives a useful guide. At 600 spins an hour on a 96% RTP slot, £5 spins mean £3,000 staked and an average cost of about £120. At the fastest legal pace of 1,440 spins, that rises to £7,200 staked and an average cost of £288. Actual results can be much worse in a bad session. The how long £100 lasts on slots page has more examples at lower stakes.
Do stake limits apply at slot sites outside the UK?
The limits are licence conditions for operators licensed by the Gambling Commission, so they apply to games offered to customers in Great Britain by those operators. A casino licensed elsewhere that targets UK players without a British licence is operating illegally, and it will not follow these rules or give you access to UK complaint routes and self-exclusion through GAMSTOP. If you travel abroad, the rules there depend on local law. Our page on playing UK slot sites abroad covers that case.
Did the stake limits change the RTP of slots?
No. A stake limit restricts how much you can bet per spin, but it does not change a slot's return to player. A 96% RTP game returns the same percentage of stakes on average whether you bet 10p or £5. What the limit does change is the maximum win in pounds, because max wins are multiples of the stake. Some studios released new versions of games around the change, so check the help screen for the RTP your casino runs. Our guide to slot RTP explains how to read it.
