An opt-in is the deliberate step of accepting a bonus or promotion, such as ticking a box, pressing ‘Claim’ or choosing an offer at sign-up, which also signals you agree to its terms. UK casinos cannot sign you up to a promotion automatically, so if you skip the opt-in, the offer simply never starts.
Opting in means actively accepting a promotion and its terms.
UK rules require express consent: no automatic enrolment in promotions.
Missing the opt-in is the most common reason a welcome offer never appears.
Opting in to a bonus is separate from agreeing to marketing messages.

What opt-in means on a slot site
In casino terms, to opt in is to say yes to a specific promotion. It is the moment you move from being eligible for an offer to being enrolled in it. Until you take that step, any bonus, free spins or cashback linked to the offer stays switched off, however much you deposit or play.
The opt-in also does legal work. By accepting, you consent to that promotion’s terms: the wagering requirement, the stake cap, the time limits and any game restrictions. That is why a good opt-in screen shows the significant terms right next to the button rather than three clicks away.
The different forms an opt-in takes
Casinos implement the step in several ways, and the variety is part of why players miss it.

Two partner examples show the range. 10bet asks new UK customers to choose the casino welcome bonus at sign-up and then make a first deposit within 7 days. Casumo states simply that opt-in is required for its 50% bonus up to £100. Coral and Ladbrokes add a second acceptance step after the qualifying bet: Coral’s spins must be accepted within 48 hours, and Ladbrokes’ daily batches claimed from the inbox before 23:59.
UK rules on opting in to promotions
Gambling Commission guidance on fair and transparent terms says players must opt in to promotions rather than being enrolled automatically, and operators need express and informed consent to the specific promotion’s terms. Two practical consequences follow:
A casino cannot attach a bonus, with its restrictions, to your deposit without your active agreement.
Once you have opted in, the operator cannot change that promotion’s terms, except to prevent fraud or unlawful behaviour.
Since 19 January 2026, the 10x wagering cap and the ban on mixed-product promotions apply on top. An opt-in can no longer tie slot spins to a sports bet, for instance. Our UK slot rule changes 2026 page sets out the full list.
Check your payment method qualifies. Several partner offers exclude e-wallets such as PayPal, Skrill and Neteller, plus prepaid cards.
Take the opt-in action before you deposit or bet, unless the terms say otherwise.
Make the qualifying deposit or stake in full, for example £10 on slots at Coral or Ladbrokes.
Look for confirmation: a bonus balance, a spins counter or an inbox message.
Accept any second-stage reward before its window closes.
Opting out and declining a bonus
Not opting in is a perfectly sensible choice. If the wagering, time limit or stake cap does not suit how you play, you can deposit and play with cash only, with no promotional restrictions at all. If you have already opted in, most casinos let you forfeit the bonus through the account area or support. You lose the bonus and its winnings; your deposit balance stays yours, since UK rules let you withdraw it while a bonus is active.
Promotional opt-ins are also distinct from marketing consent. Agreeing to receive emails or texts about offers is a separate choice that you can change in your account settings at any time. Turning marketing off does not cancel a bonus already running, and opting in to a bonus does not require marketing consent. If promotional messages are prompting you to play more than you planned, our guide to deposit limits and the time-out entry cover the tools available.

Frequently asked questions
What does opt-in mean on a casino bonus?
It means actively choosing to take part in a promotion, which also confirms you accept its terms. The step might be a tick box on the deposit page, a Claim button on the promotions page or an offer picker during registration. Without it, the bonus does not start, even if you meet every other condition. UK rules require this active consent rather than automatic enrolment. For a step-by-step guide to the process on welcome offers, see how to claim free spins, and our slot bonuses hub lists current offers with their terms.
Why didn’t I get my welcome bonus after depositing?
The most common reason is a missed opt-in, followed by a payment method that does not qualify. Many offers must be selected before the deposit, and the casino cannot add them retrospectively unless it chooses to. Coral and Ladbrokes, for example, exclude PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafe and prepaid cards from their welcome spins. Other causes include depositing less than the minimum or playing a non-slot game for the qualifying bet. Contact support quickly with the time of your deposit. Our welcome offer mistakes guide lists the other usual culprits.
Can a casino opt me in to a bonus automatically?
Not under UK rules. Gambling Commission guidance says players must opt in to promotions rather than be enrolled automatically, and the operator needs express and informed consent to the specific terms. That protects you from finding your deposit tied to restrictions you never agreed to. Some loyalty schemes and rewards run in the background, but anything with wagering or play restrictions attached should need your agreement. If you think a bonus was added without your consent, raise it with support and see how to complain to a slot site.
Can I opt out of a bonus after accepting it?
Usually yes, by asking support or using a forfeit option in the account area, though you lose the bonus and any winnings tied to it. Your deposit balance remains withdrawable, since UK rules stop a casino holding deposited money behind wagering. Opting out makes sense if the time limit or stake cap turns out not to suit you, or if you would rather play without restrictions. Check the terms for how forfeiture works at your site. The sticky bonus entry explains why the order of spending deposit and bonus money matters here.
Is opting in to marketing the same as opting in to a bonus?
No, they are separate choices. Marketing consent controls whether the casino can send you emails, texts or app notifications about offers. A promotional opt-in enrols you in one specific bonus. You can claim a welcome bonus without agreeing to marketing, and you can switch marketing off later without affecting a bonus already running. If offer messages make it harder to stick to your plans, turning them off is a sensible step, alongside the tools in our responsible gambling section and how to take a break from slots.
Do no wagering free spins need an opt-in?
Often they do, even though there is no playthrough attached. Coral’s 100 spins must be accepted within 48 hours of qualifying, and Ladbrokes’ daily spins are claimed from the inbox before 23:59 each day. The acceptance step is how the casino confirms you want the spins and agree to the game restrictions and validity period. PlayOJO’s 80 spins follow a first deposit of £10 or more; check its terms for the exact process. Our no wagering entry explains what remains attached to these offers, and daily free spins covers daily claims.
