Do free spins have wagering?

Do free spins have wagering? Some do and some don’t: it depends on the offer. In Great Britain, any wagering attached to bonus spin winnings has been capped at 10x since 19 January 2026, and many offers now carry none at all. The spins at Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO all pay winnings with no wagering.

Key takeaways

  • Whether free spins have wagering depends on each offer’s terms; look for “no wagering” or “paid in cash”.
  • Since 19 January 2026, wagering on UK bonuses, including spin winnings, cannot exceed 10x.
  • Wagering is usually set on what the spins win, not on the spin value.
  • On a 96% slot, 10x wagering costs about 40% of the winnings on average; old 35x terms usually wiped them out.
  • Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO spins all pay winnings without wagering. 18+, T&Cs apply.

Do free spins have wagering? It depends on the offer

Bonus spins come in two broad kinds. With no-wagering spins, whatever the spins win is added to your cash balance and can be withdrawn like any other money. With wagered spins, the winnings arrive as bonus funds and you must stake them a set number of times before they turn into cash. The offer’s terms always say which kind you have.

The rules in Great Britain changed on 19 January 2026, when a cap of 10x came in for all bonus wagering. Before that, spin winnings with 35x or even 50x wagering were common. Now 10x is the most any UK-licensed site can ask, and plenty of offers, including the three spin offers we list, ask for nothing. Our guide to no wagering vs wagering free spins compares the two in depth.

How wagering on free spins winnings works

A wagering requirement is a multiple of an amount that you must stake before bonus money becomes withdrawable. On spins, the amount is normally what the spins won, not what they were worth. So 10x wagering on £4 of spin winnings means £40 of stakes before release.

While the requirement is active, extra rules usually apply: a maximum bet per spin, a time limit, a list of eligible games and sometimes a cap on how much can be converted to cash. Slots generally count 100% towards wagering, but other games may count less or not at all; that is called game weighting.

Wagering does not mean you lose the winnings. It means you play them through, and because every spin carries the house edge, part of the balance is expected to go on the way.

What wagering costs: free spins winnings worked out

Take 50 spins at 10p, which is £5 of spin value. On a slot with 96% RTP, they return about £4.80 on average. Here is what different wagering levels do to that £4.80. The expected cost of wagering is the turnover multiplied by the 4% house edge.

WageringTurnover neededAverage cost of wageringAverage value left
None£0£0£4.80 in cash
5x£24£0.96About £3.84
10x (UK cap since 19 January 2026)£48£1.92About £2.88
35x (common before 2026)£168£6.72About £0, often lost before completion
50x (seen before 2026)£240£9.60About £0

These are averages. Your actual spin winnings could be zero or several times the expected figure, and a wagered balance can run out before the requirement is met. What the table shows is why the 10x cap matters: old 35x terms usually cost more than the winnings were worth on average, while 10x leaves a meaningful share. Do Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO free spins have wagering?

No. All three of the spin offers we promote pay winnings without wagering. The two matched bonuses on our list, from Casumo and 10bet, are bonus cash rather than spins and carry 10x wagering.

How to tell if free spins have wagering

The wording in the terms gives it away. These phrases are the ones to look for:

  1. Open the full terms, not just the headline or banner.
  2. Search the page for “wager”, “cash” and “bonus funds”.
  3. Note the multiple, the deadline and the eligible games if wagering applies.
  4. Check for a maximum bet while wagering and any cap on winnings.
  5. Work out the turnover needed: winnings × multiple.

UK rules on free spins wagering since January 2026

Two Gambling Commission changes took effect on 19 January 2026. First, wagering on any bonus, including spin winnings, is capped at 10x. Second, promotions that mix gambling products are banned, so a site can no longer offer casino spins in return for a sports bet, for example. Our 10x wagering slots bonus page and our guide to UK slot rule changes 2026 explain the background.

The cap applies to sites licensed for Great Britain. An offer advertising 35x or 40x wagering to British players after that date is a sign the site may not be licensed here, which is worth checking on the Gambling Commission register before depositing.

Free spins wagering myths

  • “Free spins always have a catch.” Many UK offers now carry no wagering, though there is usually a deposit or play requirement to receive them.
  • “Wagering is on the spin value.” It is normally on the winnings; check the terms, as wording varies.
  • “No wagering means no conditions.” Spins still have a fixed value, eligible games and expiry dates.
  • “Wagering can be skipped by withdrawing early.” Withdrawing usually forfeits the bonus balance and any winnings from it.

Judging free spins value with or without wagering

The fairest comparison is the average cash value of each offer. For no-wagering spins, that is spin count × spin value × RTP: 100 spins at 10p on a 96% slot are worth about £9.60 on average. For wagered spins, subtract the expected cost of the wagering, as in the table above.

The qualifying play counts too. A bet-£10 requirement on a 96% slot has an average cost of 40p, and that £10 is your money at risk. Any offer is a way of adding play to a session you were going to have anyway, never a way to make money. The whole calculation is set out in how to work out free spins value.

Frequently asked questions

Do all free spins have wagering requirements?

No. Many free spins offers in the UK now carry no wagering at all, meaning winnings go straight to your cash balance. Others still attach wagering, but since 19 January 2026 it cannot exceed 10x for players in Great Britain. The terms of each offer state which applies, usually with phrases such as no wagering, paid in cash or credited as bonus funds. Spin offers from Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO all pay winnings without wagering; 18+ and full terms apply. Our no wagering free spins page lists the current details.

What is the maximum wagering on free spins in the UK?

The maximum is 10x. A Gambling Commission rule that took effect on 19 January 2026 caps wagering on all bonuses offered to players in Great Britain, including winnings from bonus spins, at ten times the bonus amount. Before that date there was no cap, and requirements of 35x or 50x were common. If you see a site advertising higher wagering to British players now, check its licence on the Gambling Commission register. Our low wagering slots bonus page explains how the cap affects different offers.

Is wagering on free spins based on winnings or spin value?

Usually on winnings. If your spins win £5 and the terms set 10x wagering, you need to stake £50 before the money becomes withdrawable. Some offers are worded differently, so always read the exact terms. Spin value is the fixed stake per spin, such as 10p, and determines how much the spins are worth before they are played. The two are easy to confuse because both appear in the same paragraph of the terms. Our glossary entry on spin value explains how it feeds into the value calculation.

Are no-wagering free spins better?

On average they are worth more per spin, because none of the winnings has to go back through the house edge before you can withdraw. On a 96% slot, £4.80 of winnings with 10x wagering is worth about £2.88 on average after the required play, compared with the full £4.80 when there is no wagering. A wagered offer with many more spins can still compare well, so work out the average cash value of each rather than counting spins. Our guide to bonus cash vs free spins shows how to weigh different offer types.

Do Coral free spins have wagering?

No. Coral’s welcome offer gives 100 free spins at 10p each when you deposit and bet £10 or more on slots, and there is no wagering on winnings from those spins. The spins are for selected games, must be accepted within 48 hours and are valid for 7 days. Deposits made with Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards do not qualify. The offer is for new players aged 18 or over, and full terms apply. Our Coral free spins page covers the offer step by step.

Do Ladbrokes free spins have wagering?

No. Ladbrokes gives new customers 50 free spins a day for the first 10 days, up to 500 in total, after depositing and spending £10 or more on slots, and the spins carry no wagering. Each spin is worth 10p and is for selected games. You must claim each day’s spins from your inbox before 23:59, and they are valid for 7 days. Deposits by prepaid card, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers do not qualify. 18+, full terms apply. Our Ladbrokes free spins page explains the daily routine.

What happens if I do not finish the wagering in time?

Any bonus balance still subject to wagering is normally removed when the deadline passes, along with any winnings that have not yet been converted to cash. Your own deposited money is not affected and remains withdrawable. Deadlines vary: Casumo’s welcome bonus must be wagered within 7 days and 10bet’s within 3 days, for example. If a deadline looks too short for the play you would normally do, it is better to skip the bonus than to speed up or raise stakes to beat it. To check progress as you play, see how to track wagering.

Can I play any slot to clear free spins wagering?

Not always. Terms often limit wagering to certain slots, exclude some high-RTP or jackpot games, and count other casino games at a reduced rate or not at all. The free spins themselves are almost always tied to one game or a short list. Playing an excluded game can mean that stake does not count, or in some cases that winnings are removed. Check the eligible and excluded games list before you start. Our glossary entry on game weighting explains how different games contribute towards a requirement.

Is free spins wagering the same as a matched bonus?

The principle is the same, but the amount being wagered differs. With spins, the requirement usually applies to what the spins won. With a matched deposit bonus, it applies to the bonus amount, and sometimes the deposit too, though the 10x cap now limits this in Great Britain. Casumo’s 50% bonus, for example, must be wagered 10x within 7 days, so a £50 bonus needs £500 of play. Max-bet rules usually apply to both types while wagering is active. Our matched deposit entry covers how those bonuses are structured.
