Short answer: In a hold and win feature, special symbols lock in place and you get three respins; each new one that lands resets the count. Filling the grid usually pays the top prize.
Why it is popular
The counter resetting creates suspense, and every locked symbol has a visible value.
None of the seven uses hold and win; Big Bass Bonanza's cash-collect feature is the nearest relative.
In more detail
The feature usually needs six or more special symbols to start. Each carries a cash value or a fixed prize label such as mini, minor or major. Three respins begin, and any new special symbol sticks and resets the counter to three. It ends when the respins run out or the grid is full.
