Norse and Viking slots

Norse and Viking slots draw on Scandinavian myth and history: Thor's hammer, Odin's ravens, Valhalla, runes and longship raiders. The theme is known for two things in particular: bonus rounds you unlock over many visits, and a wide spread of volatility under one look. This page explains both, with pound examples and a nine-game comparison.

Key takeaways

  • Norse slots split into two flavours: the gods of Asgard and the raiders on longships.
  • Thunderstruck II made unlockable bonuses famous; reaching the last one takes 15 feature visits, which can mean a long and costly session.
  • Under one theme you will find everything from low-to-medium (Vikings Go Wild) to high volatility (Vikings, Viking Runecraft).
  • Published RTPs in our table run from about 95.5% (Hall of Gods, including jackpots) to 96.71% (Viking Runecraft).

Norse gods or Viking raiders: the two sides of the theme

Norse and Viking slots are usually filed together, but they draw on different material. The Norse side is mythology: Thor, Odin, Loki, the Valkyries, the world tree Yggdrasil, the hall of Valhalla and the end-of-days battle of Ragnarök. The Viking side is (loosely) history: bearded warriors, shield walls, longships and raids, usually played for laughs or for grit.

The split matters a little when browsing. God-led games tend to be built around wild reels and free spins with multipliers; raider games more often use collection meters, battles and expanding grids. Both sit within the wider mythology slots family, alongside Greek mythology slots.

Thunderstruck: the slot that defined Norse themes online

Thunderstruck, released in 2004 by Microgaming (now part of Games Global), is a 9-line game at 96.1% RTP with medium volatility. Its maths is easy to follow and shows how wild and free spins multipliers combine. Thor is the wild and doubles any line win he completes. Three or more ram scatters give 15 free spins in which all wins are tripled.

Put together, a Thor-assisted line win during free spins is multiplied twice: 2x for the wild, then 3x for the round, giving 6x. At 90p a spin (10p a line), a line normally worth 10p pays 20p with Thor in the base game and 60p with Thor in free spins. Small sums, but that 6x stacking is the core of the game.

Thunderstruck II moved to 243 ways at 96.65% with an 8,000x ceiling, and added two ideas that the theme has used ever since: the random Wildstorm, which can turn up to five reels wild, and the Great Hall of Spins.

Unlockable bonuses: what the Great Hall of Spins costs in time and money

In Thunderstruck II, three or more hammer scatters take you to the Great Hall of Spins. A counter records your visits. On early visits only the Valkyrie round is open; the other gods unlock as the count rises, and Thor's round needs 15 visits. Each god offers a different free spins modifier, and none is reliably worth more than the others; they spread similar value in different ways.

The design encourages longer play, so it is worth putting numbers on it. Purely as an illustration, imagine the feature averaged one trigger every 120 spins (the real rate is not published and your results will vary widely).

Stake per spinSpins needed on averageTotal stakedMinimum spinning time at 2.5 s

40pAbout 1,800About £720About 75 minutes
£1About 1,800About £1,800About 75 minutes

Most of that stake comes back as wins over time, but the expected cost still adds up: at the game's 96.65% RTP, £720 staked costs about £24 on average, and a real session can cost much more. Progress counters are a reason to set a time and spend limit in advance, not a reason to keep going. The casino's reality check reminders and our guide to session length help here.

Immortal Romance, also from Games Global, uses the same unlock idea with its Chamber of Spins. If you like the structure, you will recognise it there.

The spread here is wider than in most themes. A player who wants long, gentle sessions and a player who wants rare, large results can both find a Norse game, which is why the theme tells you so little on its own.

Yggdrasil's Viking games: a volatility ladder under one theme

Yggdrasil released Vikings Go Wild in August 2015 and Vikings Go Berzerk in November 2016. Both use a 5×4 grid with 25 lines and RTPs a fraction apart (96.3% and 96.1%), yet the first is listed as low to medium volatility and the second as medium to high. Berzerk's free spins are built around Viking characters filling rage meters, which concentrates more of the value into the bonus.

That pairing is a neat way to learn what volatility feels like. On a £20 budget at 20p a spin, a low-to-medium game will typically return small amounts often enough to keep the balance moving, while a medium-to-high game is more likely to run down further before a feature lifts it. Over the long run their cost is almost identical; the ride is not. Our volatility guide explains the measure.

Runes, Ragnarök and jackpots: other Norse mechanics

Viking Runecraft from Play'n GO is a 7×7 cluster pays grid. Clusters of five or more matching runes pay and clear, new symbols fall in, and a long enough chain charges the Ragnarök feature, where destruction powers clear symbols and a meter adds a win multiplier. That is where most of its 5,000x potential sits.

Hall of Gods from NetEnt takes a different route: a Norse-themed 20-line game linked to a progressive jackpot, with an RTP of about 95.5% that includes the jackpot share. As with any progressive jackpot, the everyday return for players who don't land the top prize is lower than the headline figure.

Modern Norse and Viking slots: Megaways and grid games

Newer releases fold the theme into current mechanics. Power of Thor Megaways (2021) runs up to 117,649 ways with high volatility and a 5,000x cap. NetEnt's Vikings (November 2018) expands from 243 ways to 78,125 in its Raid Spins round on a 7×5 grid. Hacksaw Gaming's Le Viking (January 2025) uses a 6×5 grid with 15,625 ways and a 10,000x cap at medium volatility.

Hacksaw and several other studios sell bonus buys in other countries. A bonus buy is not offered to players in Great Britain, so UK versions reach their features only through normal play, and footage from abroad can make features look more frequent than they are.

UK rules and Norse slots

Stakes are capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds. Spins last at least 2.5 seconds with no autoplay or turbo, which also means progress-based features take real time to reach. Demo versions are available only after age verification. The full list is on our UK slot rules page.

How to pick a Norse or Viking slot

  1. Decide whether you want a calm session or a swingy one, then filter by volatility rather than by theme.
  2. Look up the RTP in the game info; several of these titles exist in lower versions too.
  3. Check for progress counters or unlocks, and decide in advance how long you will play regardless of progress.
  4. Read the free spins rules: multipliers, retriggers and any meters.
  5. Set your stake within the UK cap and your own budget, and stop at the limit you planned.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Norse slot?

Thunderstruck II is the most influential Norse slot and a sensible place to start: 243 ways, 96.65% RTP, medium volatility and an 8,000x ceiling, with four god-themed bonus rounds that unlock over repeat visits. If you prefer a modern grid, Viking Runecraft posts the highest RTP in our table at 96.71%, though lower versions exist. The best choice depends on the volatility you want. Our Thunderstruck II review explains each bonus.

How many times do you need to trigger the Thunderstruck II bonus to unlock Thor?

Thor's free spins round in Thunderstruck II unlocks on your 15th visit to the Great Hall of Spins. Valkyrie is open from the start and the other gods unlock along the way. Progress is tracked by the game, but reaching the later rounds can take a long session, so decide your time and budget limits first and let the unlocks happen, or not, within them. Our guide to setting a session budget can help.

Are Viking slots high volatility?

Some are and some aren't. Vikings by NetEnt, Viking Runecraft and Power of Thor Megaways are listed as high volatility, Vikings Go Berzerk as medium to high, and Vikings Go Wild as low to medium. Le Viking from Hacksaw is listed as medium. The theme covers the full range, so check the game's information screen or our reviews before you choose. Our high volatility slots page explains what that label means for your budget.

What is the difference between Vikings Go Wild and Vikings Go Berzerk?

They share a 5×4 grid, 25 lines and similar RTPs (96.3% and 96.1%), but Vikings Go Wild is listed as low to medium volatility and Vikings Go Berzerk as medium to high. Berzerk's free spins put more weight on Viking characters filling rage meters, so more of its return sits in the bonus. Over time their cost is similar; the session feels different. Both are covered in our Vikings Go Berzerk review and its sister page.

What is the highest max win on a Norse slot?

Among the Norse and Viking games with verified figures in our records, NetEnt's Vikings and Hacksaw's Le Viking share the highest fixed ceiling at 10,000x your stake. Thunderstruck II follows at 8,000x, and Viking Runecraft and Power of Thor Megaways cap at 5,000x. Hall of Gods pays a progressive jackpot instead. These are rare outcomes, not expectations. Our page on what happens at max win explains the cap.

Does Thunderstruck still work the same way in the UK?

The maths and features are the same, but the way you play changes under UK rules. There is no autoplay, each spin takes at least 2.5 seconds, the stake is capped at £5 a spin (or £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds), and your net position for the session is always displayed. These rules have applied to slots since October 2021. Our page on why UK slots are slower explains the reasoning.

What is Ragnarök in Viking Runecraft?

Ragnarök is Viking Runecraft's top feature. It charges when a long chain of cascading cluster wins clears enough symbols in one spin sequence. On the Ragnarök spin, destruction powers remove symbols and a meter tracks how many are cleared, adding a win multiplier as it climbs. Most of the game's 5,000x potential lives here, and reaching it needs a long chain first, so it is uncommon. Our cluster pays guide explains the grid mechanics.

Are Norse slots good for beginners?

Some are. Thunderstruck is a good learning game because its maths is visible: Thor doubles line wins and free spins triple them, so you can follow exactly why a win paid what it did. Vikings Go Wild is listed as low to medium volatility, which gives steadier sessions. Unlock systems and Megaways grids are better left until you know the basics. Our slots for beginners page covers simple games across all themes.

Is Hall of Gods a progressive jackpot slot?

Yes. Hall of Gods by NetEnt is a Norse-themed 20-line slot linked to a progressive jackpot, with a top Mega jackpot that grows from a share of stakes across linked casinos. Its RTP of about 95.5% includes that jackpot contribution, so the return from ordinary play is lower than the headline figure. The current jackpot value is usually shown in the lobby or on the game screen. Our jackpot slots page explains how pooled prizes work.
