Pay anywhere slots pay out when enough matching symbols land anywhere on the grid, usually eight or more on a 6 × 5 screen, with no need for them to sit on a line or touch each other. Winning symbols then disappear and new ones drop in, so a single spin can pay several times over. Sweet Bonanza and Gates of Olympus made the format famous, and both are built around it.
A win needs a minimum count of one symbol anywhere in view, commonly 8 or more on a 30-position grid.
Prizes rise in tiers by count, typically 8–9, 10–11 and 12 or more.
Tumbles remove winning symbols and drop new ones, so one spin can chain several wins.
Most pay anywhere games pair the format with random multipliers in free spins, making them high volatility.
Joker Bombs is a medium-volatility exception; Pragmatic Play’s best-known titles are rated high.

What pay anywhere slots are
In a pay anywhere slot, position does not matter. The game counts how many of each symbol are on screen after a spin, and if any symbol reaches the minimum, it pays. Eight hearts scattered across the corners pay exactly the same as eight hearts in a neat row. Developers often call this “scatter pays” because every symbol behaves like a scatter.
The idea took off with Pragmatic Play’s Sweet Bonanza, and the studio built a whole family on it, including Gates of Olympus and Starlight Princess. Other studios, including Hacksaw Gaming and Relax Gaming, have since released their own versions.
How pay anywhere slots count a win
Most pay anywhere games use a 6 × 5 grid of 30 positions and pay from eight matching symbols upwards. The paytable lists a prize for each symbol in count bands rather than a single figure.

The figures above are an illustration of the structure; each game publishes its own values, and lower symbols pay far less, often a fraction of the stake for eight. Note that prizes are usually expressed as multiples of the total stake, not a line bet, because there are no lines. Every symbol on the grid can contribute to a win, which is why these games feel busy even when they pay little.
Why pay anywhere slots use tumbles
Almost every pay anywhere slot pairs the format with cascading reels, often called tumbles. After a win is paid, the winning symbols vanish and new ones fall into the gaps. If the new arrangement contains another eight or more of any symbol, that pays too, and the process repeats until no win remains.
Tumbles and pay anywhere fit naturally. Removing eight or more symbols from a 30-position grid opens a lot of space, and the symbols that remain all still count, so each refill has a fair chance of completing another set. The result is that the return of a single spin often comes from a short chain of wins rather than one hit.
A pay anywhere win chain, step by step
Here is how one 20p spin might unfold. The values are illustrative, chosen to show the mechanism rather than any specific game’s paytable.
The spin lands nine purple sweets scattered across the grid. That band pays 1x, so 20p.
The nine purple sweets disappear. Nine new symbols drop in from the top.
The refill completes ten green sweets, counting some that were already on screen. That band pays 2x, so 40p.
Those ten vanish and ten more symbols fall. No symbol now reaches eight, so the tumble sequence ends.
The spin has paid 60p in total from a 20p stake.
During free spins, multipliers usually join in. If a 10x multiplier symbol had landed during that sequence in a game that applies multipliers to the whole tumble total, the 60p would become £6. Our multiplier slots page explains how those multipliers add up.
Many spins produce no win at all, and a large share of wins are smaller than the stake. UK rules stop a game celebrating a return smaller than your stake as a win.

Best-known pay anywhere slots compared
All figures are the developer’s published numbers. RTP is the default or top version; casinos may run lower ones, so check the help screen.
Red Tiger’s Cash Volt shows a hybrid approach: it pays on 20 lines but adds special symbols that pay anywhere, with a 2,500x cap and RTP versions from about 91% to 96%.
RTP and volatility patterns in pay anywhere slots
RTPs across the format sit in the usual 96% band, so the mechanic itself is neither generous nor mean. What varies is volatility. Pragmatic Play’s titles keep much of their return in free spins, where multiplier bombs or orbs can transform a tumble chain, so they are rated high. Hacksaw’s Joker Bombs is rated medium, with a flatter spread of wins.
In pounds: 150 spins at 20p is £30 staked. On a 96.5% game the long-run average cost is about £1.05. On Sweet Bonanza, a session often finishes well below that average if free spins do not arrive, because the base game’s tumble chains are usually small, and occasionally far above it when they do. Our volatility guide shows how to compare ratings.
How to read a pay anywhere slot before playing
Open the paytable and note the minimum count for a win, usually 8.
Check the count bands and what the top and bottom symbols pay in each.
Confirm that prizes are shown as multiples of the total stake.
Read the tumble rules and whether multipliers apply per tumble or to the whole sequence.
Find how free spins trigger, usually four or more scatter symbols, and what changes during them.
Check the RTP the casino is running and the maximum win.
Many pay anywhere games are shown abroad with a bonus buy button; that is not offered in Great Britain, so free spins come only from natural triggers. Some games instead offer an ante bet, which raises your stake to make the free spins scatter more likely; it is an increase in cost, and the total counts towards the £5 per spin limit (£2 for players aged 18 to 24). Tumble sequences must still respect the 2.5-second minimum per spin, and there is no autoplay or turbo.

Frequently asked questions
What does pay anywhere mean on a slot?
Pay anywhere means a slot pays when enough of the same symbol appear anywhere on the grid, with no need for them to sit on a payline or touch each other. Most games use a 6 × 5 grid and pay from eight matching symbols, with bigger prizes at 10 and 12 or more. Winning symbols usually disappear and are replaced by new ones, so one spin can produce several wins. Sweet Bonanza is the best-known example. Our pay anywhere glossary entry gives the short definition.
Is pay anywhere the same as cluster pays?
No, though they are close relatives. Cluster pays slots need a group of matching symbols that touch horizontally or vertically, so position still matters. Pay anywhere slots ignore position entirely and only count how many of each symbol are on screen. Both systems usually use tumbles. Sugar Rush is a cluster pays game and Sweet Bonanza a pay anywhere game, both from Pragmatic Play, so they make a good comparison. Our guide to how cluster pays works explains the other system.
How many symbols do you need to win on a pay anywhere slot?
Most pay anywhere slots need at least eight matching symbols anywhere on a 6 × 5 grid. Payouts then rise in bands, typically 8 to 9, 10 to 11 and 12 or more. Some games use a different minimum or grid size, so the paytable is the authority. Scatter symbols that trigger free spins follow their own rule, often four or more anywhere. Lower-value symbols may pay less than the stake even at eight. Our Sweet Bonanza review walks through one paytable in full.
Do pay anywhere slots pay more often?
They can feel as if they do, because any eight matching symbols anywhere form a win and tumbles can chain several wins on one spin. But many of those wins are smaller than the stake, and the overall return is set by the RTP, which for the best-known pay anywhere games sits around 96% to 96.5%. How often a game pays is its hit frequency, which developers do not always publish. Our slot hit rate explained guide shows how hit rate and RTP differ.
Which pay anywhere slot has the highest max win?
Among the pay anywhere games we cover, Relax Gaming’s Money Train 4, which uses scatter pays on its grid, lists the highest cap at 150,000 times the stake. Sweet Bonanza 1000 reaches 25,000 times and the original Sweet Bonanza 21,100 times. Gates of Olympus and Starlight Princess cap at 5,000 times. Reaching any of these caps is extremely rare, and the games with the biggest caps tend to be the most volatile. Our high max win slots page compares caps across formats.
Are pay anywhere slots high volatility?
Most of the well-known ones are. Pragmatic Play rates Sweet Bonanza, Gates of Olympus and Starlight Princess as high volatility, because much of their return comes from free spins with multipliers. Not every pay anywhere game works that way: Hacksaw Gaming’s Joker Bombs is rated medium, three out of five. The mechanic itself does not set volatility; the paytable and features do. Check the rating in the help screen. Our high volatility slots page explains what that means for a session.
Can you use an ante bet on pay anywhere slots in the UK?
Some pay anywhere games offer an ante bet option, which raises the cost of each spin to make the free spins trigger more likely. It is not the same as a bonus buy, which is not offered in Great Britain. The ante bet increases your stake, and the total counts towards the £5 per spin limit, or £2 for players aged 18 to 24. It does not change the house edge in your favour. Our ante bet glossary entry explains how it works.
Why do pay anywhere slots pair with candy and mythology themes?
Pay anywhere grids work best with bold, easily recognised symbols, because the player needs to spot eight of a kind scattered across 30 positions at a glance. Brightly coloured sweets and fruit suit that well, which is why Sweet Bonanza set a pattern. Pragmatic Play then used the same engine with mythology themes in Gates of Olympus and Starlight Princess, where the multiplier symbols became Zeus’s orbs. Our candy slots page covers the sweet-themed side of the family.
