Space slots are games set among planets, stars, rockets and aliens, and the theme has become a testing ground for new grid mechanics. You'll find the calmest slot in many lobbies here, Starburst, and some of the most experimental. We compare eight space and sci-fi slots, put Starburst and Starburst XXXtreme side by side on the same budget, and explain cluster pays, Megaclusters and ways counts in the millions.
Space themes cover the full range: Starburst is low volatility with a 500x cap; Starburst XXXtreme is high volatility with 200,000x.
Alien and sci-fi games favour cluster pays and cascading grids, such as Reactoonz and Rocket Reels.
A ways count in the millions, like Nitropolis' 85,155,840, doesn't mean bigger returns; paytable values are scaled to match.
Published RTPs in our table run from about 96% (Planet Moolah) to 96.54% (Star Clusters Megaclusters).

What space slots are
Space slots borrow the look of science fiction and astronomy: starfields, nebulae, planets, rockets, robots, ray guns and aliens. Some are pure arcade nostalgia, all neon and glowing jewels; others are cartoonish invasions or sleek futuristic cities. The theme overlaps heavily with gem slots, since glowing crystals against a starry background are a staple.
The setting gives studios licence to break the usual reel layout. Grids that grow, symbols that split and creatures that merge all feel natural in a sci-fi world, so space has become one of the main homes for experimental mechanics such as cluster pays.
Three orbits: the main kinds of space slot
Cosmic gems and arcade games: classic reels with jewels and stars, such as Starburst and Starburst XXXtreme.
Alien and creature grids: cartoon aliens or monsters on cluster-pays grids, such as Reactoonz and Reactoonz 2, plus Planet Moolah's abducted cows on standard reels.
Rockets, stars and sci-fi cities: games built on new ways systems, such as Rocket Reels, Star Clusters Megaclusters and the cyberpunk Nitropolis.
The groups behave differently. Arcade games are usually simple and quick to understand; grid games need a read of the help screen before the first spin, because wins form in ways that aren't obvious from the screen alone.
Headline RTPs here are tightly grouped, all within about half a point of 96.3%. What differs enormously is volatility and ceiling, from Starburst's 500x to XXXtreme's 200,000x, which is why the theme alone is no guide to how a game will treat your budget.
Starburst vs Starburst XXXtreme on the same £20
These two NetEnt games share a look, a 5×3 grid and expanding wilds on the middle reels, and their RTPs differ by only 0.17 points. Yet they are close to opposites. Here is what £20 at 20p a spin, or 100 spins, looks like on each.

What a typical session feels like
Frequent small wins, balance drifts slowly
Many blank spins, rare multiplied hits
The difference comes from the wilds. In Starburst, a wild on reels 2 to 4 expands, locks and gives a respin, up to three times. In XXXtreme the same wilds carry random multipliers, and Random Wilds with multipliers from x2 to x150 can be added after a spin; multipliers in one win combine. That turns a gentle feature into a high-risk one. Abroad, XXXtreme also sells paid spin modes; feature buys are not offered to British players, so UK versions leave them out.
Alien cluster grids: how Reactoonz and Rocket Reels pay
Cluster-pays games don't use lines. A win forms when five or more matching symbols touch horizontally or vertically anywhere on the grid. Winning symbols then vanish and new ones drop in from above, a process called cascading reels, so one paid spin can produce several wins in a row.
Reactoonz adds a charge meter that fills as winning symbols are cleared and releases increasingly powerful features as it charges, and its larger creatures can appear to clear or transform parts of the grid. Hacksaw Gaming's Rocket Reels uses the same 7×7 cluster structure with its own feature set and a higher 10,000x ceiling.
A worked example: if a cluster of five low-paying aliens is worth 0.5x your stake and you play at 40p, it pays 20p. If that cascade leads to a second cluster worth 1x (40p) and a third worth 2x (80p), the spin returns £1.40 in total. Long chains like that are what grid games are built to produce, and they are also why results swing: many spins produce no cluster at all. Our guide to how cluster pays works has more examples.
Megaclusters and millions of ways: why big numbers mislead
Big Time Gaming's Megaclusters system, used in Star Clusters, starts on a 4×4 grid. Each winning symbol splits into four smaller symbols, so the grid grows as wins land. One split turns one position into four, taking a 16-position grid to 19, and each further split adds three more. More positions mean more chances to form clusters, which is how the feature builds.
ELK's Nitropolis makes a similar point with ways: it starts at 4,096 and can rise to 85,155,840. Numbers on that scale sound like they must pay more, but they don't on their own. A game with more ways divides its return across more combinations, so each combination pays a smaller multiple of the stake. What sets the long-run price is the RTP; what sets the size of rare results is the max win. Our explainer on paylines vs ways goes through the arithmetic.
Volatility patterns in space slots
Arcade-style space games such as Starburst and Planet Moolah sit at the lower end: Starburst is rated low and Planet Moolah medium. The grid and ways games are almost all medium-to-high or high. If you want a calm session in this theme, the classic reel games are where to look; if you want long cascade chains and big ceilings, the grid games deliver that at the cost of more blank spins. Our low volatility slots and high volatility slots pages list examples from every theme.
UK rules that apply to space slots
In Great Britain, stakes are capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24. Every spin, including a full cascade sequence, takes at least 2.5 seconds, with no autoplay, turbo or slam-stop. Your net position is always shown, and a return smaller than your stake can't be celebrated as a win, which matters on cluster games where small cascades are frequent. Demo play requires age verification. See our UK slot design rules for detail.
How to choose a space slot
Decide between an arcade-style game and a grid game; the first is calmer, the second more complex and swingier.
Open the info screen and confirm the RTP version your casino runs.
For grid games, read how clusters form and what the charge meters or splitting symbols do.
Note the max win and volatility, then pick a stake that gives your budget enough spins.
Set your deposit and time limits before you start, and stop when you reach them.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular space slot?
Starburst by NetEnt is the best-known space-themed slot in the UK: glowing gems against a starfield, 10 lines that pay both ways, low volatility and a 500x ceiling at 96.09% RTP. Its expanding wild respins are simple to follow, which has made it a common first slot. No public ranking covers every casino, so this is reputation rather than a measured figure. The Starburst review explains its single feature in detail.
What is the difference between Starburst and Starburst XXXtreme?
They share a look and a 5×3 grid, but Starburst is low volatility with a 500x cap and 10 lines, while Starburst XXXtreme is high volatility with a 200,000x cap and 9 lines. XXXtreme's wilds carry random multipliers, and Random Wilds with multipliers up to x150 can be added after a spin. RTPs are close: 96.09% and 96.26%. Paid spin modes in XXXtreme are not available in the UK. The XXXtreme review covers the multipliers.
How does cluster pays work in Reactoonz?
Reactoonz pays for groups of five or more matching symbols that touch horizontally or vertically anywhere on its 7×7 grid; there are no lines. Winning symbols are removed and new ones cascade in, so one spin can produce several wins. A charge meter fills as symbols are cleared and releases features as it charges. The RTP is 96.51% and the ceiling 4,570x. Our Reactoonz review walks through the features.
Do slots with millions of ways pay more?
No. A game such as Nitropolis can reach 85,155,840 ways, but its return is spread across all those combinations, so each pays a smaller multiple of your stake. How much a game returns over time is set by its RTP, and how large a rare result can be is set by its max win. More ways usually means more frequent small wins rather than bigger ones. Our explainer on paylines vs ways to win shows the maths.
Which space slot has the highest RTP?
Among the space and sci-fi slots with verified figures in our records, Star Clusters Megaclusters by Big Time Gaming has the highest published RTP at 96.54%, followed by Reactoonz at 96.51%. All eight games in our table sit between about 96% and 96.54%, so the differences are small. Casinos may run lower versions, so check the game's info screen. Our high RTP slots page compares returns across themes.
How big can max wins on space slots get?
It varies enormously. Starburst XXXtreme has the highest verified ceiling in our space table at 200,000x your stake, or £40,000 at 20p. Rocket Reels and Nitropolis cap at 10,000x, Reactoonz 2 at 5,083x, Reactoonz at 4,570x and the original Starburst at 500x. The highest ceilings are reached extremely rarely. Our guide on what max win means sets out how ceilings are applied and why they are so rarely reached.
Are space slots good for beginners?
The classic ones are. Starburst is low volatility with one easy-to-follow feature, which makes it a sensible game for learning how slots behave, ideally at a low stake. Planet Moolah, rated medium, is also straightforward. Cluster-pays and Megaclusters grids are better tried once you understand cascades and volatility. Our list of the best slots for beginners suggests simple games across all themes.
What are Megaclusters?
Megaclusters is a Big Time Gaming mechanic used in Star Clusters. The game starts on a 4×4 grid; when symbols form a winning cluster, each winning symbol splits into four smaller ones, so the grid grows and creates more chances for further clusters. It is a cluster-pays system with an expanding board. Star Clusters Megaclusters is listed at 96.54% RTP and medium-to-high volatility. Our Big Time Gaming page covers the studio's other mechanics.
Can I play space slots for free in the UK?
Yes, most have demo modes, but UK rules allow free play only after the casino has verified your age, as has been the case since May 2019. Register, complete the age check and the demo option becomes available. Demos use the same maths as the real games, so they're a good way to see how a cluster grid or expanding wild behaves before staking money. Our free slots guide explains demo access.
