3 reel slots are the simplest form of slot: three spinning reels, usually showing three symbols each, with a handful of paylines and classic symbols such as cherries, bars, bells and sevens. Online versions keep that compact layout but often add one modern twist, such as a respin, a multiplier wheel or a separate high-stakes mode, so they are less basic than they first look.
A 3 reel slot usually has a 3 × 3 grid and between 1 and 9 paylines, most often 5.
Fewer reels mean fewer combinations, so each symbol’s weighting on the reel matters more.
Fire Joker (96.15% RTP, 800x max win) and Mega Joker (up to 99% at top stake) are the best-known online examples.
Low line counts do not mean low volatility: Mega Joker is rated high.
UK rules apply in full, including the 2.5-second spin minimum and stake limits.

What counts as a 3 reel slot
A 3 reel slot has three vertical reels. Online, each reel nearly always shows three symbols, making a 3 × 3 window, and wins are paid along fixed paylines that run across all three reels. Because a win needs three matching symbols in a line, there is no such thing as a three-of-a-kind versus five-of-a-kind ladder: a line either completes or it does not.
The category overlaps with classic slots and fruit slots, but it is defined by the layout rather than the look. Most 3 reel games do use traditional fruit and bar symbols, though, because they descend directly from the earliest mechanical machines.
From mechanical reels to online 3 reel games
The first commercially successful slot machines had three physical reels, and that layout dominated for most of the 20th century, including the fruit machines found in British pubs and arcades. Physical reels limited how many symbols could fit, which kept prizes small. Our history of slot machines traces that story.
When slots moved online, five reels quickly became standard because they allow more combinations and richer bonus features. Three-reel games survived as a deliberate retro choice, and developers such as Play’n GO and NetEnt have kept the format alive with games built around one strong feature rather than a cluttered screen.
How three reels change the maths
Every slot result is chosen by a random number generator, but the number of reels shapes how often each outcome can occur. Imagine three reels with 20 positions each. There are 20 × 20 × 20 = 8,000 possible stops. If each reel carries one red seven, three sevens on the centre line happen once in 8,000 spins on average.
Add a second seven to each reel and the chance becomes 8 in 8,000, or 1 in 1,000. That is the lever designers use. With only three reels, changing the count of a single symbol has a big effect on its frequency, so the paytable has to be balanced carefully. Online games are not limited by physical reel strips; they use virtual reels with as many positions as the maths needs, which is how a three-reel game can still offer a large top prize.

The figures are an illustration, not any real game’s reel strips, which developers rarely publish. They show why hit frequency can be tuned so precisely even on a small grid. Our guide to how online slots work covers the RNG side.
Paylines on a 3 × 3 grid
A 3 × 3 window has only a few sensible lines. The common five-line pattern is:
The top row, straight across.
The middle row, straight across.
The bottom row, straight across.
A diagonal from top left to bottom right.
A diagonal from bottom left to top right.
Some games add zigzag lines to reach eight or nine, and a few older single-line designs pay only the centre row. With fixed lines, your stake covers all of them; a 10p spin on a five-line game is 2p per line. Each line is checked separately, so one spin can pay on two or three lines at once.
Features that modern 3 reel slots add
The best online 3 reel games add just enough to keep the simple layout interesting.
Fire Joker: respins and a multiplier wheel
In Fire Joker, if two reels land fully stacked with the same symbol but no win forms, those reels lock and the third reel respins for a second chance. Filling the whole 3 × 3 window with matching symbols sends you to a wheel that multiplies the win, from 2x up to 10x. The maximum win is 800x the stake.
Mega Joker: the Supermeter
Mega Joker splits play into two parts. Base-game wins can be collected or moved to the Supermeter, a separate set of reels played at a higher stake with bigger prizes and mystery wins. The base game also carries a random progressive jackpot. NetEnt quotes a return of up to 99%, but only when the Supermeter is played at the top stake; ordinary play returns less.
Other well-known online 3 reel titles include NetEnt’s Jackpot 6000, which uses a similar Supermeter idea, and IGT’s Diamond series. Check each game’s help screen for its current RTP.
3 reel slots and their closest classic relatives
Only two of the slots we review use a true three-reel layout, so the table also includes classic-style five-reel games with very few lines, which play in a similar spirit. Figures come from each developer.
If you want to step up from three reels while keeping a classic feel, Sizzling Hot Deluxe is the most natural next game: the same fruit symbols and five lines, spread over five reels. Our 5 reel slots page explains how the extra reels change things.
RTP and volatility patterns in 3 reel slots
Simple does not mean gentle. With few lines and few symbols, a 3 reel game can be built either way. Fire Joker is medium volatility with a modest 800x cap, so most of its return comes from regular line hits and the occasional wheel spin. Mega Joker is rated high, because much of its return depends on the Supermeter and jackpot.
In pounds: 100 spins at 20p on Fire Joker is £20 staked. At 96.15% the long-run expected cost is about 77p, and with a medium-volatility game, a 100-spin session will usually land within a moderate distance of that. On a high-volatility game the same £20 can disappear quickly or jump sharply. Our volatility guide explains how to read the ratings.

Frequently asked questions
What is a 3 reel slot?
A 3 reel slot is a game with three vertical reels, usually showing three symbols each in a 3 × 3 window. Wins come from matching three symbols along a payline, and most games have between one and nine lines, often five. The format comes from early mechanical machines and pub fruit machines, so the symbols are often cherries, bars, bells and sevens. Online versions sometimes add a respin or multiplier feature. Our classic slots page covers the wider retro category.
Do 3 reel slots pay better than 5 reel slots?
Not as a rule. Payout depends on each game’s RTP, not its number of reels. Fire Joker returns 96.15%, which is in line with many five-reel games, while Mega Joker can reach 99% but only at its top stake in Supermeter mode. Three-reel games do usually have lower maximum wins, because fewer reels and lines limit the size of combinations. Check the RTP in each game’s help screen. Our high RTP slots page lists the best-returning games we cover.
What is the best 3 reel slot online?
There is no single best, but Fire Joker and Mega Joker are the most widely played online. Fire Joker suits players wanting a medium-volatility game with a respin and a multiplier wheel, a 96.15% RTP and an 800x cap. Mega Joker suits those who like a high-volatility game with a Supermeter mode and a random progressive jackpot. Both have plain 3 × 3 grids and five lines. Try either in demo mode after age verification. Our Fire Joker review explains its features.
How many paylines does a 3 reel slot have?
Most 3 reel slots have five paylines: the three horizontal rows and the two diagonals across the 3 × 3 window. Some add zigzag patterns to reach eight or nine lines, and a few older single-line designs only pay the middle row. Lines are usually fixed, so your stake covers all of them, and a 10p spin on a five-line game works out at 2p per line. The paytable shows the line patterns. Our paylines glossary entry explains how lines are counted.
Why does Mega Joker have a 99% RTP?
Mega Joker’s published return of up to 99% applies only to its Supermeter mode at the highest stake. Base-game wins can be moved to the Supermeter, which plays at a higher stake with larger prizes and mystery wins. Playing the base game alone, or the Supermeter at lower stakes, returns noticeably less. It is a good example of why an RTP headline needs reading in context. Our guide on slot RTP versions explains other reasons a quoted RTP may differ from your actual return.
Are 3 reel slots good for beginners?
They can be, because the rules are simple and every win is easy to see. With three reels and five lines, you can understand the whole game from the paytable in a minute. The catch is that a simple look does not guarantee low volatility; Mega Joker, for instance, is rated high. A medium-volatility game such as Fire Joker is a gentler starting point. Set a budget before you play and try the demo first after age verification. Our online slots for beginners guide covers the basics.
Do online 3 reel slots have nudges and holds?
Very few do. Holds and nudges are the hallmark of British pub fruit machines, but most online 3 reel slots replace them with features such as respins, where some reels lock while others spin again. Fire Joker’s Respin of Fire works this way. Online slots in the UK must also meet rules on spin speed and win celebrations that pub machines are not covered by in the same way. Our guide to fruit machine features explains holds, nudges and feature trails.
Can you play 3 reel slots for free?
Many UK casinos and developers offer demo versions, but by law you can only play them after your age has been verified, a rule in place since 2019. A demo uses play money and the same maths as the real game, so it is a useful way to see how a 3 reel slot behaves before staking. Demo results do not predict real-money results, as every spin is random. Our page on free slots explains how demo play works in the UK.
