Dragon slots are games with a dragon at the centre of the theme, and they come from two very different traditions: the lucky, water-dwelling dragons of Chinese culture and the fire-breathing, gold-hoarding dragons of European legend. Both tend to be high volatility. Below we compare the main titles, show what a 1.5-point RTP gap costs in pounds and explain the multiplier and hold-and-spin features.
Eastern dragons signal luck and fortune; Western dragons signal fire, treasure and danger, and the games differ accordingly.
The two dragon slots with verified figures in our records, Dragon's Fire and Floating Dragon, are both high volatility.
Their RTPs differ by 1.46 points: about £2.92 more in expected cost per £200 staked on Dragon's Fire.
Always check the help screen; several popular dragon titles run in more than one RTP version.

What counts as a dragon slot
A dragon slot is any game where a dragon is the main character, the main symbol or the engine of the bonus. Sometimes the dragon is the wild; sometimes it carries a multiplier, guards a pile of coins or flies across the reels adding symbols. What the dragon does tells you more than what it looks like, and that is the focus of this page.
Dragon games overlap with three neighbouring shelves: Asian themed slots, where dragons sit among lanterns and gold ingots; magic and wizard slots, where they guard castles; and fairy tale slots, where they wait for a knight.
Eastern and Western dragon slots: what the difference means for play
In Chinese tradition the dragon is a benevolent creature linked to water, emperors and good fortune. Slots in this style use red and gold, pearls, coins and lucky numbers, and they often borrow features from land-based casino games, such as respins with coin symbols and tiered jackpots. The mood is celebratory.
In European legend the dragon breathes fire, hoards treasure and must be defeated. Western dragon slots lean on drama: eggs that hatch, flames that turn reels wild, multipliers that build like a gathering threat. The mood is tense, and studios often pair that with higher volatility.

Dragon slots compared: the figures we can verify
Only two dragon slots have fully verified figures in our records, so the table also lists well-known dragon titles without numbers. For those, open the game's information screen before playing; it will show the RTP your casino runs.
Dragon's Fire was released in 2018 and Floating Dragon in 2021. Floating Dragon comes from Reel Kingdom, the studio behind the Big Bass series, and is distributed by Pragmatic Play.
What a 1.46-point RTP gap costs in pounds
Dragon's Fire is listed at 95.25% and Floating Dragon at 96.71%. That looks like a small difference, but RTP is the long-run share of stakes returned, so the gap compounds with every spin.

These are averages across a very large number of spins. On a high-volatility game, any single session can land far above or far below them. RTP is still the most reliable guide to price over time, which is why it pays to compare it before choosing between two games you like equally. Red Tiger games also commonly run in several RTP versions, so the figure at your casino may be lower than the one above; our guide to RTP versions explains why.
Dragon's Fire: the multiplier that keeps climbing
Dragon's Fire is built around a Dragon's Egg multiplier. In the base game it grows with wins and drops back after a losing spin. Three Free Spins symbols start the bonus: you pick a golden dragon, receive a random number of spins, and from then on the multiplier does not reset after a losing spin. Every win nudges it up and it holds that level to the end of the round.
That turns the round into a slow build. Take a line win worth £1 at a 50p stake. Early in the round, at a low multiplier, it might pay a few pounds; the same £1 win landing late, after the multiplier has climbed a long way, pays many times that. The order in which wins arrive matters almost as much as the wins themselves, which is a large part of the game's high volatility.
Floating Dragon and the hold-and-spin hoard
Floating Dragon's full name includes 'Hold & Spin', and that is its core: coin-style money symbols that lock in place for a set of respins. In a typical hold and win round, you start with three respins, each new money symbol that lands locks and resets the count to three, and the round ends when the respins run out or the screen fills. The total of the locked values is paid.
The maths is easy to follow. If the round starts with six coins worth 1x, 2x, 1x, 5x, 1x and 3x your stake, that is 13x; at 20p a spin, £2.60. Each extra coin adds its value, and a full screen usually carries a bonus prize on top. Our guide to how hold and win works goes through the variations.
Exact respin counts and coin values vary by game. Check the help screen of the version you load for Floating Dragon's own rules.
Why dragon slots run hot on volatility
Both verified dragon games here are high volatility, and that fits the theme: dragons are framed as rare, powerful and dangerous, and designers mirror that with features that are rare and capable of large results. In practice, a high-volatility game can pass a hundred or more spins without a bonus.
A simple budgeting check: divide your session budget by your stake to get your spin count. £20 at 20p is 100 spins, which may not be enough to see a feature on a high-volatility dragon game. £20 at 10p doubles that. Neither guarantees anything, but a lower stake gives the game's features more chances to appear within the same spend. Our bankroll guide covers this in more depth.
Dragon slots and UK rules
In Great Britain, stakes are capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24. Spins take at least 2.5 seconds, autoplay and turbo are not available, and a bonus buy is not offered, so dragon free spins and hold-and-spin rounds are reached only by landing the trigger symbols. Free demo play is available after age verification.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best dragon slot?
There is no single best dragon slot, but Floating Dragon has the higher verified RTP of the two in our records at 96.71%, against 95.25% for Dragon's Fire. Dragon's Fire offers the higher ceiling at 10,000x versus 5,000x, and a free spins multiplier that never resets. Both are high volatility. If price matters most, Floating Dragon is cheaper to play over time. The Dragon's Fire review covers its multiplier in detail.
What does the dragon usually do in a dragon slot?
In most dragon slots the dragon is either the wild symbol, the carrier of a multiplier or the trigger for a bonus. In Dragon's Fire it is linked to the Dragon's Egg multiplier; in Eastern-style games it often appears alongside coin symbols in a hold-and-spin round. Reading the paytable tells you exactly which role it plays. Our guide to slot symbols explains wilds, scatters and bonus symbols.
Are dragon slots high volatility?
Most well-known dragon slots are. Both dragon games with verified figures in our records, Dragon's Fire and Floating Dragon, are listed as high volatility, which means longer gaps between features and a bigger share of the return in rare, larger wins. Lower stakes give a fixed budget more spins. Always check the volatility rating in the game's information screen. Our page on what volatility means explains the term in plain English.
What is the max win on Dragon's Fire?
Dragon's Fire by Red Tiger has a published maximum win of 10,000x your stake, which would be £1,000 at 10p or £50,000 at the £5 UK maximum. The free spins round, where the Dragon's Egg multiplier doesn't reset, is where large results come from. Reaching the cap is extremely rare. Note that its RTP is 95.25%, lower than many modern slots. Our max win explainer explains how caps are set.
Why do two dragon slots have different RTPs?
Each studio designs its own maths model, so RTP varies between games regardless of theme. Dragon's Fire is published at 95.25% and Floating Dragon at 96.71%. On top of that, many studios supply several versions of one game and casinos choose which to run, so the same slot can pay back differently at two sites. The help screen shows the figure that applies. Our page on why RTP differs between casinos covers this.
Is Floating Dragon made by Pragmatic Play?
Floating Dragon is released under Pragmatic Play and comes from Reel Kingdom, the studio best known for the Big Bass series, which distributes its games through Pragmatic Play. It is a 5×3 game with 10 fixed paylines, a 96.71% default RTP, high volatility and a 5,000x ceiling, released in 2021. Lobbies usually list it under Pragmatic Play. Our Reel Kingdom page explains the relationship.
Can I play dragon slots for free?
Many dragon slots have a demo mode, but in Great Britain free play is only available after the casino has verified your age. That means opening an account and passing the age check first. Demo play uses the same maths as the paid version and is a good way to see how often features appear before spending money. Our guide to testing a slot in demo mode suggests what to look for.
Do Eastern dragon slots pay differently from Western ones?
Not as a rule; the theme doesn't set the maths. But the two styles borrow different features. Eastern dragon slots often use coin respins and tiered jackpots taken from land-based casino games, while Western dragon slots favour growing multipliers and wild reels. Both styles include high-volatility games. Judge each on its RTP, volatility and max win. Our slot themes guide explains why themes and maths are separate decisions.
Can I buy the free spins on dragon slots in the UK?
No. Feature buys are not offered to players in Great Britain, so dragon slots in UK lobbies have no option to pay for the free spins or hold-and-spin round. You reach them only by landing the trigger symbols in normal play. Videos from other countries often show bought bonuses, which can make features look more frequent than they are. Our explainer on how bonus buys work covers the UK position.
