Gold slots are online slots built around gold: mines and dynamite, Wild West gold rushes, and golden coins or nuggets that carry cash values and jackpots. This guide separates those three meanings, compares eight well-known titles on verified RTP and volatility, and shows in pounds how golden cash symbols, fixed jackpots and stake-linked RTPs actually work.
‘Gold’ can mean a setting (mines, gold rushes) or a mechanic (golden symbols that carry cash values).
Most jackpots on gold slots are fixed multiples of your stake, not growing progressive pots.
Reels of Gold’s RTP varies with stake, reaching 96% at the top band.
Five of the eight games compared are high volatility; Wolf Gold is the steadiest.

What gold slots are
Gold slots are games where gold is the star, whether as the prize in a mine, the goal of a frontier gold rush or the colour of the symbols that pay. They are among the oldest slot themes, because a pile of gold is the simplest possible picture of a prize, and they now span everything from 25-line classics to Megaways games.
As with any theme, gold on the reels doesn’t make a game more generous. Two gold slots can have very different RTPs and volatility, and the prize symbols are only worth what the paytable says at your stake. The useful question is which kind of gold slot a game is.
Three things ‘gold’ means on a slot
A setting. Gold mines, dynamite, mine carts and miners, or frontier towns in a gold rush. Bonanza Megaways and Wild West Gold are examples.
A mechanic. Golden coins, nuggets or bars that show a cash value or a jackpot label and pay when collected. Gold Blitz, Mustang Gold and Fortune Coin work this way.
A badge. ‘Gold’ in a title just to signal a premium prize, as with Wolf Gold, whose setting is a desert canyon and whose money symbols are moons.
Knowing which one you are looking at tells you where the money comes from: lines and cascades in a setting-led game, collections and jackpots in a mechanic-led one.
Bonanza is the mining slot that changed the industry. Big Time Gaming released it at the end of 2016 as the first game on the Megaways engine, with six reels of two to seven symbols and a horizontal reel, set on an open-cast gold mine. Its ‘reactions’ clear winning symbols and refill the reels, and nearly all of its potential sits in free spins. Red Tiger’s Dynamite Riches takes a different route: Dynamite Wilds light a fuse that unlocks four extra features during play, so the game grows richer as a session goes on.
Mining games lean high-volatility. At 20p a spin, £40 buys 200 spins on Bonanza, and many such sessions will pass without a strong free spins round. Choose these for the occasional big moment, not for steady returns.
Gold rush slots on the frontier
Pragmatic Play’s frontier pair shows how one theme can carry very different maths. Wild West Gold is a 40-line high-volatility game in which wilds land on the middle reels and, in free spins, stick with multipliers attached. Mustang Gold is a 25-line game where golden money symbols are gathered by a collect symbol on reel five, with a Jackpot Reveal on top. Our Wild West slots page groups more frontier games.
Golden symbols that carry cash values
In mechanic-led gold slots, the gold coins or nuggets are cash collect symbols. Each shows a multiple of your stake or a jackpot label and pays nothing on its own until a collector lands on the same spin. In Gold Blitz, a Collect symbol on reel 1 or reel 6 sweeps up every Cash and Jackpot symbol in view; game guides list Cash values from 0.5x to 20x the total stake and jackpots of 25x, 250x and 2,500x.
A worked example at 50p a spin, with an invented symbol mix:
Cash symbols showing 2x, 5x and 0.5x land, plus a Minor jackpot symbol (25x).
A Collect symbol lands on reel 6 on the same spin.
The collection adds up: 2 + 5 + 0.5 + 25 = 32.5x your stake.
At 50p, that pays £16.25, on top of any ordinary ways wins.
Without the collector, the same screen pays nothing from those symbols. That near-collection is built into the maths and says nothing about the next spin. Our cash collect slots page covers the mechanic across all themes.
Fixed jackpots on gold slots scale with your stake
Most jackpots on gold slots are fixed jackpots: set multiples of your stake, printed in the game, that never grow. That makes them easy to value. Here are the two largest verified examples at different stakes.

A higher stake raises the prize and the cost per spin in exactly the same proportion, so it doesn’t improve your odds or your RTP. A progressive jackpot, by contrast, grows from pooled stakes and pays a pound sum; our guide to how progressive jackpots work explains the difference.
Reels of Gold: when RTP depends on your stake
Barcrest’s Reels of Gold puts a 5×4 main reel set beside a towering 5×12 colossal set, with up to 100 paylines. Like many Barcrest games, its RTP is linked to stake: 96% is the top of the range, and some stake levels return less. The bands are listed in the help screen.
It can look as if raising your stake to reach the top band saves money. It doesn’t. Take 250 spins: at £1 a spin (£250 staked) and 96%, the theoretical cost is £10; at 40p a spin (£100 staked) and an illustrative 94%, it is £6. The lower percentage at the smaller stake is still the cheaper session. Set your stake from your budget first, then note which RTP applies.
Volatility patterns and UK rules
Five of the eight games are high volatility, two sit at medium to high, and only Wolf Gold is a clear medium, which suits longer sessions on a modest budget. Over 200 spins at 50p (£100 staked), Wolf Gold’s 96.01% implies a theoretical cost of £3.99, with regular small line wins along the way; Dynamite Riches at 94.76% implies £5.24, with bigger gaps between wins. Whatever you choose, UK limits apply: £5 a spin from age 25, £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no autoplay or turbo, and no bonus buys.
Studios known for gold slots
Pragmatic Play has three of the eight games here and favours collect symbols and fixed jackpots. Big Time Gaming made the defining mining slot. Games Global’s Fortune Factory Studios built Gold Blitz into a series, with spin-offs such as Gold Blitz Extreme. Red Tiger, Barcrest and IGT round out the list, with Barcrest best known for stake-linked RTPs.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best gold slots?
The best-known gold slots are Wolf Gold, Bonanza Megaways, Gold Blitz, Wild West Gold and Mustang Gold. Wolf Gold is the steadiest, with medium volatility and fixed jackpots up to 1,000x. Bonanza Megaways and Gold Blitz are high-volatility games with bigger swings. Mustang Gold has the highest verified RTP in our table at 96.53%. The right pick depends on how much variance you want. For a wider ranking by return, see high RTP slots.
Which gold slot has the highest RTP?
Mustang Gold has the highest verified RTP among the gold slots we compare, at 96.53%, closely followed by Wild West Gold at 96.51%. On £100 staked, 96.53% implies a theoretical cost of £3.47. Dynamite Riches has the lowest standard figure in our table at 94.76%, a cost of £5.24 per £100. Casinos can run lower versions, so check the help screen for the live figure. Our guide on how to find a slot’s RTP shows where it sits.
Is Bonanza a gold slot?
Yes, Bonanza is a gold-mining slot, and it is also the first Megaways game. Big Time Gaming released it at the end of 2016 on six reels of two to seven symbols plus a horizontal reel, giving up to 117,649 ways. Its reactions clear winning symbols and refill the reels, and most of its value sits in free spins. It returns 96.00% with high volatility. Our guide to how Megaways works explains the engine Bonanza launched.
How do golden cash symbols work?
Golden cash symbols show a value, usually a multiple of your stake, and pay only when a collector symbol lands on the same spin. In Gold Blitz, for example, a Collect symbol on reel 1 or 6 adds up every Cash and Jackpot symbol in view. Without a collector, the values pay nothing. Because the values scale with your stake, a 20x symbol is £2 at 10p and £20 at £1. Our hold and win slots page covers a close relative where cash symbols lock in place.
Are gold slot jackpots progressive?
Most gold slot jackpots are fixed, not progressive. Wolf Gold’s Mega jackpot is 1,000x your stake and Gold Blitz’s Mega is 2,500x, so both are known in advance and grow only if you raise your bet. A progressive jackpot instead grows from a share of every stake across linked casinos and pays a changing pound sum. Fixed jackpots scale cost and prize equally, so a bigger stake doesn’t improve your odds. Our progressive jackpot slots page covers the other kind.
Does a higher stake improve the RTP on Reels of Gold?
A higher stake can move you into a higher RTP band on Reels of Gold, but it doesn’t make your session cheaper. The game’s RTP varies with stake and reaches 96% at the top. Over 250 spins, £1 a spin at 96% costs £10 in theory, while 40p a spin at an illustrative 94% costs £6. Choose your stake from your budget, not the RTP band. Our page on what stake to play explains the reasoning.
What is the biggest max win on a gold slot?
Among the gold slots in our verified data, Dynamite Riches has the highest fixed cap at 5,341x your stake, with Gold Blitz at 5,000x. Bonanza Megaways’ cap varies by version. At the £5 UK maximum for players aged 25 and over, 5,341x would be £26,705. These outcomes are extremely rare and need a near-perfect feature, so treat them as ceilings rather than goals. How caps are set and applied is covered in slot max win explained.
How does the Gold Blitz bonus work?
When three to six Bonus scatters land in Gold Blitz, you choose between two bonus rounds, and the number of scatters decides how generous each option is. One is a free spins round built around wild multipliers. The other, also called Gold Blitz, strips the reels back to Collect, Cash and Jackpot symbols, with a Collect on every spin for two to seven spins. Both are designed to have similar long-run value. Our Games Global page lists the wider Gold Blitz series.
Is Wolf Gold really a gold slot?
Wolf Gold uses ‘gold’ as a badge rather than a theme. Its setting is a desert canyon with wolves, buffalo and eagles, and its money symbols are glowing moons rather than gold coins. It is still filed with gold slots because of its name and its fixed jackpots, the largest being a 1,000x Mega prize. It has a 96.01% RTP and medium volatility, which makes it the steadiest game in our table. Our wolf slots page groups it with similar games.
