Asian themed slots are games styled on East Asian culture, most often Chinese fortune symbols such as gold ingots, lucky eights and red lanterns, but also Japanese cherry blossom and anime art. Under the shared look sit three quite different kinds of game. This page decodes the symbols, compares eight titles and shows why RTP versions matter more here than in most themes.
The label 'Asian themed slots' covers games that look related but are built quite differently. Grouping them helps you know what you are opening.
Chinese fortune slots: gold, red, coins, dragons, lucky numbers and festival drums. Many were designed for American casino floors and later brought online, so they carry land-based features such as 243 ways and tiered jackpots.
Japanese-styled slots: cherry blossom, samurai, geisha imagery and temple gardens, usually on standard video slot layouts with free spins.
Anime-inspired games: bright character art in a Japanese animation style, often on modern grids with cascades and multipliers.
Bamboo and panda games sit between the groups. Dragon games, which straddle East and West, have their own page on dragon slots.

Asian themed slots compared by RTP, volatility and max win
Headline RTPs bunch around 96%, but notice how often the table mentions other versions. That is the most important practical point on this page, and it is covered below.
From casino floor to phone: the land-based fortune slots
88 Fortunes (2016, under the Bally brand) and Dancing Drums (2017) come from Light & Wonder, one of the largest makers of machines for American casinos. Their online versions keep the land-based shape: a 5×3 screen, 243 ways rather than fixed lines, and features designed to be read at a glance across a busy casino floor.
Dancing Drums shows a typical floor-game idea. In the base game it pays across 243 ways; during free spins the reels grow taller and the ways rise to as many as 7,776. More ways means more chances for each symbol to connect, which is why the bonus carries much of the game's value. Our 243 ways slots page explains how ways are counted.
Stakes and jackpot tiers in fortune slots
Several land-based fortune games link your bet level to what you can win. 88 Fortunes is known for this: the bet you choose sets how many gold symbols are active, and each active gold symbol opens another jackpot tier in its Fu Bat jackpot feature. The game's help screen sets out exactly which tiers each bet level unlocks.
Under UK rules this interacts with the stake cap. Players aged 25 and over can stake up to £5 a spin, those aged 18 to 24 up to £2. If a tier needs a bet level above your cap, it is simply out of reach. That is not a reason to stake more than you planned; the lower levels still return their stated RTP over time, and a higher bet means losing more, faster, on most sessions.
RTP versions: why an Asian slot can cost far more at one casino
Studios often supply one game in several RTP versions, and the casino chooses which to run. The gap can be large. Sakura Fortune from Quickspin is listed at up to 96.58%, but a version around 90% also exists. Big Bamboo is 96.13% by default with a 94.13% version.

At 20p a spin, £100 is 500 spins. Played on the low Sakura Fortune version, the long-run price of those spins is nearly three times the price on the top version, for an identical-looking game. The live figure is always in the game's information screen; our guide to finding a slot's RTP shows where.
Japanese and anime-style slots
Sakura Fortune (April 2017) is the classic Japanese-styled slot: a 5×4 grid with 40 lines and a heroine set against cherry blossom. The anime-inspired games are newer and more mechanical. Moon Princess from Play'n GO uses a 5×5 cascading grid where winning symbols clear and refill. Starlight Princess from Pragmatic Play uses the same pays-anywhere engine as Gates of Olympus: eight or more matching symbols anywhere on a 6×5 grid pay, with multipliers adding to the action.
Starlight Princess 1000 (2023) keeps the RTP around 96.5% but lifts the ceiling from 5,000x to 15,000x. As with other '1000' editions, a higher cap at a similar RTP usually means the return is concentrated in rarer results.
UK rules that apply to Asian themed slots
All slots in Great Britain run with a minimum 2.5-second spin, no autoplay or turbo, and a visible net position. Stakes are capped at £5 (25 and over) or £2 (18 to 24). Feature buys, common on anime-style grid games abroad, are not offered to British players. The rules and their dates are on our UK slot rules page.
How to choose an Asian themed slot
Pick the style you enjoy: fortune, Japanese or anime.
Open the information screen and confirm the RTP version, especially on games known to run low versions.
On jackpot-tier games, read which bet levels unlock which tiers, then set your stake from your budget.
Check the volatility and max win, and work out how many spins your budget allows at that stake.
Use a deposit limit and stop when the session budget is spent.

Frequently asked questions
What are the most popular Asian themed slots in the UK?
Well-known Asian themed slots in UK lobbies include 88 Fortunes and Dancing Drums from Light & Wonder, Floating Dragon from Pragmatic Play, Sakura Fortune from Quickspin and Big Bamboo from Push Gaming. Anime-style games such as Starlight Princess and Moon Princess are also widely stocked. No public ranking covers every casino, so treat popularity as reputation. Our page on the most popular slots in the UK explains how popularity is judged.
Why does the number 8 appear so often in Asian slots?
In Chinese, the word for eight sounds similar to the word for wealth or prosperity, so 8 is considered a lucky number. Fortune slots use it in titles such as 88 Fortunes and on top-paying symbols. It has no effect on results: each spin is decided by a random number generator, and no symbol or number makes a win more likely. Our explainer on whether online slots are random covers how results are produced.
Which Asian themed slot has the highest RTP?
Of the Asian themed slots with verified figures in our records, Floating Dragon has the highest default RTP at 96.71%, followed by Sakura Fortune at up to 96.58% and Moon Princess and Starlight Princess at 96.50%. Several of these games also run lower versions, and Sakura Fortune has one around 90%, so check the game's information screen at your casino. Our high RTP slots page compares returns across all themes.
How do jackpot tiers work in 88 Fortunes?
88 Fortunes links your bet level to the number of active gold symbols, and each active gold symbol opens another tier in the Fu Bat jackpot feature. Lower bets play for fewer tiers; higher bets open more. The help screen lists the exact levels. In the UK, stakes are capped at £5 a spin (or £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds), which may put some tiers out of reach. Choose your stake from your budget. Our jackpot slots page explains jackpot types.
Are anime slots the same as other Asian slots?
Not really. Anime-style slots borrow a Japanese animation art style but usually run modern mechanics: Starlight Princess uses a pays-anywhere 6×5 grid with multipliers, and Moon Princess a 5×5 cascading grid. Chinese fortune slots, by contrast, often use 243 ways and jackpot tiers from land-based machines. The look is shared; the maths isn't. Our guide to cascading reels explains the grid mechanics anime games often use.
What is the max win on Big Bamboo?
Big Bamboo by Push Gaming has a published maximum win of 50,000x your stake, the highest among the Asian themed slots in our records. At 10p that would be £5,000, and at the £5 UK maximum £250,000. Results anywhere near that level are extremely rare. The game is high volatility, and a 94.13% RTP version exists alongside the 96.13% default. Our Big Bamboo review explains how its features build.
Why is Sakura Fortune's RTP different at different casinos?
Quickspin supplies Sakura Fortune in more than one RTP version: up to 96.58%, with a version around 90% also in existence. Each casino chooses which to run. The difference is substantial: on £100 of stakes the expected cost is about £3.42 on the top version and about £10 on the low one. The game's information screen shows the live figure. Our guide on why RTP differs between casinos covers the reasons.
Do Asian themed slots have free spins?
Most do. Dancing Drums expands its reels during free spins, raising the ways from 243 to as many as 7,776. Starlight Princess and Moon Princess have free spins rounds with multipliers or cascades. Land-based fortune games often add a jackpot feature alongside the free spins. The trigger and number of spins are listed in each game's help screen. Our free spins feature entry explains how these rounds usually work.
Can I play Asian themed slots for free in the UK?
Yes, many have demo versions, but UK rules only allow demo play after the casino has verified your age, which has been the case since May 2019. You'll need to register and pass the check first. Demo play uses the same maths as the real game, so it is useful for seeing how features trigger and how volatile a game feels. Our free slots page explains how demo access works.
