Aztec and Mayan slots

Aztec and Mayan slots are online slots set among the step pyramids, gold masks and jungle ruins of ancient Mesoamerica, usually with an explorer hunting treasure. Gonzo’s Quest is the genre’s landmark. This page explains what the art borrows from which civilisation, how the falling-block Avalanche pays in pounds, and how the best-known games compare.

Key takeaways

  • Most ‘Aztec’ slots blend Aztec, Maya and Inca imagery, plus the El Dorado legend from present-day Colombia.
  • Gonzo’s Quest (95.97% RTP, 2,500x) set the template: falling stone blocks with a multiplier that climbs on each chained win.
  • Not every jungle-temple slot is Aztec: Relax Gaming sets Temple Tumble in an ancient Cambodian jungle.
  • Verified data on this theme is thin, so check each game’s help screen for RTP and max win.

What Aztec and Mayan slots are

Aztec and Mayan slots take their look from the civilisations of Mexico and Central America: stepped stone pyramids, carved masks, jaguar and eagle warriors, feathered serpents, calendar stones and a great deal of gold. Most add an explorer, often a conquistador or a modern treasure hunter, which lets the game present its bonus as a search for a lost city.

The label covers theme only. The games underneath range from 20-line video slots to Megaways and grid games. What they share most often is a fondness for falling or tumbling symbols, a habit that started with one very successful NetEnt release and stuck to the theme ever since. Our wider guide to adventure slots covers the explorer side of the genre.

Aztec, Maya and Inca: what slot art blends together

Slot studios rarely separate the three great pre-Columbian cultures, and ‘Aztec’ is often used as shorthand for all of them. They were in fact distinct peoples, far apart in place and time.

CultureWhereHeight of powerImages slots borrow
Aztec (Mexica)Central Mexico, capital Tenochtitlan14th to early 16th centuryEagle and jaguar warriors, the sun stone, feathered serpent, gold jewellery
MayaYucatán, southern Mexico, Guatemala, BelizeClassic period, roughly AD 250–900Stepped pyramids, glyph-covered stone, calendars
IncaThe Andes, centred on Peru15th to early 16th centuryMountain citadels, gold sun discs
El Dorado legendHighlands of present-day ColombiaSpanish-era legendA lost city of gold sought by explorers

Gonzo’s Quest is a neat example of the blend: a Spanish conquistador searches a South American jungle for El Dorado among carved stone masks. None of this affects how the game pays, but it explains why a ‘Mayan’ slot and an ‘Aztec’ slot can look almost identical in a lobby.

Gonzo’s Quest and the falling-block template

NetEnt’s Gonzo’s Quest replaced spinning reels with stone blocks that drop into a 5×3 grid. When a win lands on one of its 20 paylines, the winning blocks shatter, the blocks above fall, and new ones drop in from the top. NetEnt calls this an Avalanche; the general term is cascading reels. Each further win in the same spin pays at a higher multiplier: 1x, 2x, 3x and then 5x in the base game. In the Free Falls round the ladder is tripled to 3x, 6x, 9x and 15x.

Here is what four chained wins of 40p each are worth in each mode. The 40p values are illustrative; the ladder is the game’s own.

Win in chainBase gameFree Falls
1st40p × 1 = 40p40p × 3 = £1.20
2nd40p × 2 = 80p40p × 6 = £2.40
3rd40p × 3 = £1.2040p × 9 = £3.60
4th40p × 5 = £2.0040p × 15 = £6.00
Total£4.40£13.20

Without multipliers those four wins would pay £1.60. The ladder is where most of the value sits, so long chains matter more than any single win, and the biggest results come from Free Falls. Chains of one or two Avalanches are far more common than four.

Not every jungle temple is Aztec

Lobby tags are loose, and a stone temple in a jungle is enough to land a game in an ‘Aztec’ filter. Temple Tumble Megaways is the clearest case. Relax Gaming’s launch material describes a jungle setting with stone sculptures and ceremonial fire, and its product chief placed it in an ancient Cambodian jungle; Aztec imagery appears only among the top-paying symbols. It shares the mood and the falling symbols of Gonzo’s Quest, with stone blocks that must be destroyed to reach its bonus, but not the history.

This matters only if the theme is why you are choosing a game. If you are choosing on maths, the theme was never the point: check the volatility and RTP instead.

Other Aztec-themed titles in UK lobbies

Several studios have released games with Aztec in the name. We don’t hold verified figures for these, so treat this as a list to search for and read each game’s help screen for its RTP, volatility and cap:

  • Pragmatic Play: Aztec Gems, Aztec Bonanza and John Hunter and the Aztec Treasure.
  • Play’n GO: Aztec Idols and Aztec Warrior Princess.
  • WMS (now Light & Wonder): Montezuma, named after the Aztec ruler.

Availability varies between casinos, and older titles may not be listed everywhere.

RTP and volatility patterns in Aztec slots

The two Gonzo games sit slightly below the 96% many players use as a rule of thumb. In pounds, on £100 staked, Gonzo’s Quest at 95.97% implies a theoretical cost of £4.03 and the Megaways version at 95.77% implies £4.23. Temple Tumble Megaways, at 96.25%, implies £3.75. Our RTP guide explains why these are long-run averages and not session predictions.

Volatility differs more than RTP. Take 200 spins at 25p, £50 staked. On the medium-volatility original, chained Avalanches keep small wins coming and many sessions finish within a few pounds of the £2 theoretical cost, though some lose much more. On the Megaways remake, with a 21,000x ceiling, the same £50 is far more likely to drift down for long stretches between bigger moments. Higher ceilings are paid for with longer dry spells.

Studios behind Aztec and Mayan slots

NetEnt created the template, and its sister studio Red Tiger, part of the same Evolution group since 2020, rebuilt it on Megaways. Pragmatic Play and Play’n GO produce the most Aztec-named titles today, while Relax Gaming’s Temple Tumble borrows the falling-block idea in a different jungle.

What to check before playing an Aztec slot

  1. Open the help screen and note the RTP; the Gonzo games are already below 96%, and lower versions may exist.
  2. Read the multiplier ladder, if the game has one, for both the base game and free spins.
  3. Check whether wins come from paylines or Megaways ways, as this changes how often small wins land.
  4. Convert the max win into pounds at your stake to see the ceiling.
  5. Decide your budget and stake together so you get a sensible number of spins.
  6. Play the demo first if the falling-block mechanic is new to you; it needs an age-verified account.

UK rules on Aztec slots

Stakes are capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24. Spins last at least 2.5 seconds, and autoplay, turbo and slam-stop are switched off, so a long Avalanche chain plays out at normal pace. Red Tiger’s international page for Gonzo’s Quest Megaways lists a feature buy, but bonus buys are not offered in Great Britain, so Free Falls only arrive through play. Our UK slot rules page covers the details.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best Aztec slots?

Gonzo’s Quest is the best-known Aztec-style slot, with a 95.97% RTP, medium volatility and a 2,500x cap. Its Megaways remake by Red Tiger raises the ceiling to 21,000x at 95.77% and higher volatility. Pragmatic Play’s Aztec Gems and Aztec Bonanza and Play’n GO’s Aztec Idols are other well-known titles, though we don’t hold verified figures for them. Which is best depends on how much swing you want. The slot comparison tool lines up any two of them side by side.

Is Gonzo’s Quest Aztec, Mayan or Inca?

Gonzo’s Quest blends all three, which is typical of the genre. Gonzo is a Spanish conquistador hunting El Dorado, a legend that actually comes from the highlands of present-day Colombia, and the stone masks and temple ruins borrow from Aztec and Maya art. NetEnt doesn’t present it as a faithful history; it is an adventure story. The theme has no effect on the game’s maths. Our page on slot themes explains why studios mix sources like this.

What is the difference between Aztec and Mayan slots?

In practice there is little difference between Aztec and Mayan slots, because studios use the two labels almost interchangeably. Historically, the Aztecs ruled central Mexico from the 14th century, while the Maya flourished in the Yucatán and Central America centuries earlier. Slot art mixes their pyramids, masks and calendars freely. To choose between two such games, compare their RTP, volatility and features instead. Our guide on how to choose a slot sets out what to compare.

How does the Avalanche feature work?

The Avalanche is NetEnt’s name for cascading wins in Gonzo’s Quest. Symbols fall into place instead of spinning; when a win lands, the winning blocks shatter and new ones drop in, and any new win pays at a higher multiplier. In the base game the ladder runs 1x, 2x, 3x and 5x; in Free Falls it runs 3x, 6x, 9x and 15x. The chain costs nothing extra and stops when a refill brings no win. Our guide to how cascading reels work covers the mechanic generally.

Is Temple Tumble Megaways an Aztec slot?

Not strictly. Relax Gaming’s launch material describes Temple Tumble as set in an ancient Cambodian jungle, with Aztec imagery used only among the top-paying symbols. Casinos often file it with Aztec slots because it shares the jungle temple look and falling symbols of Gonzo’s Quest. It has a 96.25% RTP, high volatility, up to 46,656 ways and a top prize of about 7,767x. Our jungle slots page groups games by setting.

What is the biggest max win on an Aztec slot?

Gonzo’s Quest Megaways has the highest verified maximum in our Aztec data at 21,000x your stake. That is £4,200 at 20p a spin and £105,000 at the £5 UK cap for players aged 25 and over. The original Gonzo’s Quest caps at 2,500x. A cap describes the ceiling, not a likely result: reaching it needs an exceptional Free Falls chain that very few players ever see. Our explainer on what max win means puts these numbers in context.

Are Aztec slots high volatility?

Aztec slots range from medium to high volatility. Gonzo’s Quest is medium, its Megaways remake is medium to high, and Temple Tumble Megaways is high. Medium volatility means fairly regular smaller wins with occasional bigger chains; high volatility means longer quiet spells and rarer larger results. Choose a stake that gives you a few hundred spins from your budget either way. Our high volatility slots page explains what to expect from the swingier end.

Can I play Aztec slots for free in the UK?

Yes, most Aztec slots have demo versions, but UK-licensed casinos will only let you play them after verifying your age. That has been the rule since 2019. Demos use play credits, so you can watch how Gonzo’s Avalanche multipliers build without staking anything. A demo session tells you how the game works, not how a real-money session will go. Our page on what a slot demo is explains the limits.

Why do so many Aztec slots use falling symbols?

Falling symbols suit the theme because collapsing stone blocks look natural in a ruined temple, and Gonzo’s Quest made the pairing famous. Later games copied both the look and the mechanic: Temple Tumble, for example, has stone blocks to destroy alongside cascading wins. Mechanically, falling symbols let one paid spin produce a chain of wins, often with a rising multiplier. Our cascading reels slots page compares games with the mechanic across all themes.
