Gonzo's Quest Megaways vs the original Gonzo's Quest

NetEnt's Gonzo's Quest made the falling-block Avalanche reel famous: symbols drop into place instead of spinning, winning blocks shatter, and a multiplier rises with each consecutive win in the chain. When NetEnt bought Red Tiger in 2019, the two studios became stablemates, and Red Tiger released this Megaways version in 2020. The quickest way to understand it is to see what changed.

The headline is the eight-fold jump in the top prize, paid for with higher volatility and a slightly lower default RTP. If you liked the original for its steady rhythm, the Megaways version will feel more volatile; if you wanted more from its Free Falls, this is the one built for that.

Gonzo, El Dorado and the jungle setting

The story is unchanged: Gonzo, a cartoon conquistador, hunts for the lost city of El Dorado in a South American jungle. Carved stone blocks with animal faces and masks serve as symbols, and Gonzo himself stands beside the reels reacting to wins. Red Tiger's art is denser than NetEnt's 2010s original, partly because a Megaways grid can show up to 42 symbols at once. Fans of the setting can find more in our Aztec slots and adventure slots pages.

How the Megaways grid works in Gonzo's Quest

Each of the six reels shows between two and seven blocks on every drop. The number of ways to win is those heights multiplied together. Seven on every reel gives 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 = 117,649. A low drop such as 2, 3, 2, 3, 2, 3 gives only 216. Wins pay for matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left, in any position.

Because block counts change between cascades as well as between paid spins, the ways count can rise or fall in the middle of a chain. Our guide on how Megaways works covers the engine in more depth.

Avalanche and the base-game multiplier

After every win, the winning blocks are destroyed and new blocks fall into the gaps. If they form another win, it pays and the chain continues. The multiplier steps up with each win in the chain: the first win pays at x1, the second at x2, the third at x3, and every win after that at x5. When the chain ends, it resets to x1 for the next paid spin.

Win in chainMultiplierPayout
1stx150p
2ndx2£1.00
3rdx3£1.50
4thx5£2.50
Total£5.50

The same four wins without multipliers would pay £2. The Avalanche multiplier is where most base-game value comes from, so long chains matter more than any single win. Our explainer on cascading reels covers the general mechanic.

Unbreakable Wilds: wilds that survive the Avalanche

The Megaways version adds wilds that don't break when they are part of a win. Instead of being destroyed with the other winning blocks, an Unbreakable Wild stays in place for the next fall, where it can help form another win. Only two can be on the reels at once: one on reels 1 to 3 and one on reels 4 to 6. They substitute for paying symbols and for Free Fall symbols.

That last point matters, because a wild can complete a Free Fall trigger. A surviving wild also makes longer Avalanche chains more likely, which in turn pushes the multiplier higher.

Earthquake: clearing out the low-paying symbols

At random, the reels can shake and destroy all the low-paying symbols, so only high-paying ones remain for the drops that follow. Combined with the x5 multiplier at the back of a long chain, an Earthquake is one of the base game's better outcomes. It can't be triggered on purpose and there is no meter to watch.

Free Falls: the bonus with x15 multipliers

Free Falls are the free spins feature. They trigger when three or more Free Fall symbols form a winning way, or two do with a wild. Each Free Fall symbol in the winning way awards 3 free spins, so a way made of four Free Fall symbols gives 12. More Free Falls can be won during the round.

Inside the round, the Avalanche multiplier ladder is tripled: x3, x6, x9 and then x15 for every further win in the chain. Using the same four 50p wins as above, the chain would pay £1.50 + £3 + £4.50 + £7.50 = £16.50 instead of £5.50.

When Free Falls end, the game returns to the spin that triggered them, destroys the trigger symbols and lets the chain continue, with the multiplier from before the bonus still active. That small detail can add a few more base-game wins after the bonus finishes.

How to play Gonzo's Quest Megaways

  1. Open the info screen and check the RTP shown; 95.77% is the default, but other versions may be in use.
  2. Pick a stake within the UK limit: £5 per spin at 25 and over, or £2 if you are 18 to 24.
  3. Press spin. Blocks fall, wins pay, and the Avalanche continues until no new win forms.
  4. Track the multiplier bar above the reels: x1, x2, x3, x5 in the base game.
  5. If three Free Fall symbols connect on a way, the bonus starts with the x3, x6, x9, x15 ladder.
  6. Check your net position on screen and stop at the limit you set before playing.

RTP and volatility, worked through in pounds

The default RTP of 95.77% means a house edge of 4.23%. Over 300 spins at 10p, which is £30 staked, the long-run average cost is about £1.27. At £1 per spin over the same 300 spins it is about £12.69. Red Tiger's page lists a hit frequency of about 26%, so roughly one spin in four starts a winning chain.

Volatility is medium to high. The base game, with its x5 cap and frequent small chains, keeps a balance ticking over better than many Megaways games; the Free Falls carry the big outcomes. Compared with the original's medium rating, expect longer gaps between meaningful wins. See what volatility means in slots for a plain-English explanation.

The 21,000x max win and what it takes

The published max win is 21,000x. At the £5 stake limit that is £105,000; at £2 it is £42,000; at 10p it is £2,100. Red Tiger's own figure is 20,972x, which rounds to the same headline. Results anywhere near this require a long x15 chain on a high-ways drop with premium symbols, so it is a ceiling that almost no session will approach.

UK rules: no Free Falls buy, 2.5-second spins and age-checked demos

Red Tiger's international page lists a feature buy, but bonus buys are not offered to players in Great Britain, so Free Falls only come from normal drops. Each paid spin must last at least 2.5 seconds, though a long Avalanche chain will take longer as it plays out. Autoplay and turbo are not available. You can try the game in demo mode once your age is verified. Our UK slot stake limits guide explains the £5 and £2 caps.

Bonanza Megaways is the closest cousin: cascades plus a multiplier that never resets in free spins, rather than Gonzo's fixed ladder. Temple Tumble shares the jungle-temple mood. Piggy Riches Megaways is Red Tiger's other NetEnt remake from the same period.

Pros, cons and who Gonzo's Quest Megaways suits

Advantages

  • A clear, published multiplier ladder in both base game and bonus.
  • Unbreakable Wilds and Earthquake add variety the original lacked.
  • Much higher 21,000x ceiling than the original's 2,500x.
  • Familiar character and rules for fans of the 2010s classic.

Drawbacks

  • 95.77% default RTP is a little below the original.
  • Higher volatility means longer waits for Free Falls.
  • Busy screen on smaller phones when reels show seven blocks.

It suits players who know the original and want a bigger-ceiling version with the same logic. Newcomers who prefer gentler swings may find the original, or our list of best slots for beginners, easier going.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Gonzo's Quest Megaways?

The default RTP of Gonzo's Quest Megaways is 95.77%, a house edge of 4.23%. Casinos can run other versions, so the game's help screen is the only reliable source for the figure you are playing. That compares with 95.97% for NetEnt's original Gonzo's Quest. Over £30 of spins at the default rate, the long-run average cost is about £1.27. See how to find a slot's RTP for where to look.

What is the max win on Gonzo's Quest Megaways?

The maximum win is 21,000 times your stake, which Red Tiger's page lists more precisely as 20,972x. At the £5 stake limit for players aged 25 and over, that would be £105,000; at a 10p stake it would be £2,100. It needs a long Free Falls chain at the x15 multiplier on a drop with lots of ways. Very few sessions get anywhere near it. Read what max win means for context.

How do Free Falls work in Gonzo's Quest Megaways?

Free Falls trigger when three or more Free Fall symbols form a winning way, or two do with a wild. Each Free Fall symbol in that way gives 3 free spins, and more can be won during the round. Inside Free Falls the Avalanche multiplier climbs x3, x6, x9 and then x15 with each consecutive win in a chain. You can't buy them in the UK. Our guide to how slot features trigger explains the general logic.

What are Unbreakable Wilds in Gonzo's Quest Megaways?

Unbreakable Wilds are wild symbols that are not destroyed when they form part of a win. They stay on the reels for the next Avalanche drop, where they can help create another win and extend the multiplier chain. Only two can be on the reels at once, one on reels 1 to 3 and one on reels 4 to 6, and they substitute for Free Fall symbols too. See our wild symbol glossary entry for other wild types.

Is Gonzo's Quest Megaways better than the original?

Neither is better outright; they suit different players. The Megaways version has a far higher ceiling (21,000x vs 2,500x), extra features and more volatile play, while the original has a slightly higher RTP (95.97% vs 95.77%) and steadier, medium-volatility sessions. If you want gentler swings, the original fits better. Our page on whether Megaways slots are better looks at the trade-offs across the format.

How does the Avalanche multiplier work?

In the base game, each consecutive win in an Avalanche chain is multiplied by the next step on the ladder: x1 for the first win, x2 for the second, x3 for the third and x5 for every win after that. When a drop produces no new win, the chain ends and the multiplier resets to x1. In Free Falls the ladder is x3, x6, x9 and x15. Our guide on how multipliers work in slots compares this with other designs.

Who made Gonzo's Quest Megaways?

Gonzo's Quest Megaways was made by Red Tiger, not NetEnt, and released in 2020. NetEnt created the original Gonzo's Quest and bought Red Tiger in 2019, which brought the two studios together; both are now part of Evolution. Red Tiger has rebuilt several NetEnt favourites this way, including Piggy Riches Megaways. Our Red Tiger studio page covers its other games.

Can I play Gonzo's Quest Megaways for free in the UK?

Yes, in demo mode at casinos that offer it, but only after age verification. UK rules introduced in May 2019 stop licensed casinos showing free-to-play games to anyone whose age hasn't been checked. The demo uses the same maths as the real game, so it is useful for seeing how Avalanche chains and Free Falls behave. Our guide on testing a slot in demo mode has tips.
