Why the Honey Rush slot hex grid plays differently

Honey Rush arrived on 31 October 2019 as Play’n GO’s first hexagonal cascading grid. Instead of rows and columns, 37 six-sided cells form a large hexagon, like a honeycomb. Clusters of five or more matching symbols that touch each other pay, and they can take any shape.

Geometry matters here. On a square grid, a symbol away from the edges touches four neighbours. On a hex grid it touches six. More neighbours means more ways for matching symbols to connect, and a single transformed cell can join two separate groups into one bigger cluster.

How to play Honey Rush

  1. Open the game rules and check the RTP your casino runs; lower versions than 96.5% exist.
  2. Set a stake and spin to fill the honeycomb.
  3. Clusters of five or more touching symbols pay, disappear and are replaced by falling symbols.
  4. On a losing spin, watch for Worker Colony, which can turn the cells around the centre into a cluster.
  5. Winning clusters fill the Rush meter; reaching its levels starts and powers up the Rush feature.
  6. When the feature ends, check the net position display against your session limit.

Cascades in Honey Rush work the same way as on square grids. Our guide to how cluster pays works walks through a full cascade sequence.

Worker Colony: the base-game helper

Worker Colony can activate at random on a spin that would otherwise lose. It looks at the symbol in the centre cell and transforms the six symbols around it to match, creating a seven-symbol cluster on the spot. That cluster pays and cascades like any other, and it also adds to the Rush meter.

It is a small but useful feature for a high-volatility game, because it turns some dead spins into modest returns. It doesn’t change the overall RTP, which already includes it.

The Rush meter and its four levels

Every symbol in a winning cluster adds to the Rush meter, which has four levels. Reaching them unlocks the Rush feature and builds it up as it continues:

LevelWhat you get
Level 1The Rush feature starts with one honeypot wild
Level 2A second honeypot wild joins the grid
Level 3A third honeypot wild joins the grid
Level 4The Queen Colony is unlocked

On top of those rewards, a Drone Colony is banked each time the meter enters a new level, ready for when the wins dry up.

The feature keeps going while wins keep forming, and ends only when no more clusters can be made and every stored Colony has been used. That is why a Rush round can run for a long time on one stake.

Honeypot wilds and their multipliers

Honeypot wilds are sticky wild symbols that move around the grid during the Rush feature to help build clusters. Each one is randomly given a x1, x2 or x3 multiplier. When more than one honeypot is part of the same cluster, their multipliers combine.

A worked example at a 40p stake: a cluster that would pay 80p, touching a single x3 honeypot, pays £2.40. With x1 it pays the plain 80p. Because the honeypots stay on the grid and move, a strong one can boost several clusters in a single Rush round.

Drone Colony and Queen Colony

Drone Colony is held in reserve and used only when the Rush feature has run out of wins. It transforms five symbols around the centre symbol to match it, which can restart the chain. You collect one each time the meter enters a new level.

Queen Colony unlocks at level four. It transforms symbols to create a cluster of at least 20 matching symbols, with a chance to turn the whole grid into one symbol. A full-grid result with honeypot multipliers attached is the route to the top of the game’s range.

Honey Rush max win: 9,000x and how realistic it is

The max win is 9,000 times the stake: £900 at 10p, £4,500 at 50p, £18,000 at £2 and £45,000 at £5. Reaching it needs a Rush feature that climbs to level four, a Queen Colony that fills most or all of the grid with a high-paying symbol, and strong honeypot multipliers in play.

That combination is very rare. Most Rush rounds stop at levels one or two and pay a modest multiple of the stake, and plenty of sessions end without reaching level four at all.

Honey Rush RTP and volatility for your budget

A top RTP of 96.5% means a theoretical cost of £3.50 per £100 staked. A 250-spin session at 20p (£50 staked) has a theoretical cost of £1.75, and 100 spins at £1 costs £3.50 in theory. Lower RTP versions push those figures up.

High volatility means the Rush feature carries much of the game’s value. Base-game clusters and Worker Colony soften the gaps, but long losing stretches are normal. Choose a stake that gives you enough spins to see several Rush rounds rather than one.

Honey Rush and UK slot rules

In Great Britain the Rush feature can’t be bought, autoplay and turbo are off, and each spin takes at least 2.5 seconds. The stake limit is £5 per spin from age 25 and £2 from 18 to 24. A long Rush round counts as one spin’s worth of stake, however many cascades it contains. Demo play requires age verification first.

Honey Rush vs other cluster pays slots

Play’n GO later returned to the hive with Honey Rush 100, which has its own rules and figures. Among reviewed cluster games, these are the closest comparisons:

Jammin’ Jars is the closest match in spirit, with moving multiplier wilds of its own and a higher ceiling. Reactoonz shares the studio’s charge-meter thinking. More are listed on our cluster pays slots page.

Honey Rush pros and cons

Advantages

  • Hex grid gives six-way connections
  • Worker Colony rescues some losing spins
  • Moving honeypot wilds with stacking multipliers
  • 9,000x max win

Drawbacks

  • No free spins round
  • High volatility with long gaps
  • Most Rush rounds stop at the lower levels
  • Lower RTP versions exist

Honey Rush suits players who like grid games and enjoy watching a feature build, and who can accept long quiet spells. It is less suited to small budgets looking for regular returns.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Honey Rush?

Honey Rush has a top RTP of 96.5%, which gives a theoretical return of £96.50 per £100 staked over a very long run of spins. Play’n GO also makes lower versions available, and casinos choose which one to offer, so check the figure in the game rules before you play. Because the game is high volatility, short sessions can land far from that average in either direction. Our explainer on why RTP differs between casinos covers how versions are chosen.

Does Honey Rush have free spins?

No, Honey Rush has no free spins round. Its bonus is the Rush feature, which starts as the Rush meter fills from winning clusters. The meter has four levels, adding up to three honeypot wilds with multipliers, Drone Colonies that create new clusters when wins run out, and a Queen Colony at the top level. The feature continues until no more wins can be formed. For games built around free spins instead, see our free spins slots page.

What is the max win on Honey Rush?

The max win on Honey Rush is 9,000 times your stake, which is £9,000 at £1 a spin or £45,000 at £5, the UK maximum stake for players aged 25 and over. Reaching it needs a Rush feature that climbs to level four and a Queen Colony that covers most or all of the grid, helped by honeypot multipliers. That is a very rare result. Our page on high max win slots compares games with higher ceilings.

How do honeypot wilds work in Honey Rush?

Honeypot wilds appear during the Rush feature: one at the start, a second at meter level two and a third at level three. Each is sticky, moves around the grid to help form clusters and carries a random x1, x2 or x3 multiplier. When several honeypots join the same cluster, their multipliers combine, so a cluster touching more than one can pay several times its normal value. Our sticky wild entry explains how sticky wilds work in other games.

What is the Queen Colony in Honey Rush?

Queen Colony is the top reward of the Rush meter, unlocked at level four. It transforms symbols to create a cluster of at least 20 matching symbols, and there is a chance it turns the entire 37-cell grid into one symbol. Combined with honeypot multipliers, it is how the game reaches its biggest results. Few Rush rounds get that far, so treat it as an occasional bonus rather than an expected one. Our bonus round entry covers multi-stage features.

Is Honey Rush high volatility?

Yes, Honey Rush is high volatility. Worker Colony and small base-game clusters provide some returns, but much of the value sits in the Rush feature, which reaches its higher levels only occasionally. That means sessions can swing widely, with long losing runs between strong rounds. Picking a stake that allows a few hundred spins helps you see the game’s range without overspending. See our guide to playing high volatility slots for budgeting approaches.

When was Honey Rush released?

Play’n GO released Honey Rush on 31 October 2019, describing it as its first hexagonal cascading grid slot. The game has 37 cells and pays for clusters of five or more matching symbols. Its release date makes it a few years older than most of today’s grid games, but its mechanics still compare well. The studio later returned to the theme with Honey Rush 100. Our Play’n GO slots page lists more of the studio’s games.

Can I play Honey Rush in demo mode?

Yes, many UK casinos let you try Honey Rush in demo mode once your age is verified, which has been a legal requirement since May 2019. The demo uses the same grid, Rush meter and colonies, so it is a useful way to see how quickly the meter fills and how the hex grid shapes clusters. Demo credits have no cash value. Our guide on testing a slot in demo mode explains what a short demo can and can’t show.
