Buffalo slots

Buffalo slots are online slots themed on the North American plains, with stampeding bison, eagles and canyon sunsets, and most of them share one engine: six reels, four rows and 4,096 ways to win, with multiplier wilds in free spins. This page explains that engine with worked numbers and compares the main buffalo games.

Key takeaways

  • Most buffalo slots use a 6×4 grid with 4,096 ways: any matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left pay, wherever they land.
  • Multiplier wilds in free spins are where buffalo slots get their big swings, and nearly every game here is rated high volatility.
  • Buffalo King lists a 93,750× cap; its Megaways sequel lists 5,000×, so a sequel isn't always the bigger game.
  • Published RTPs here range from 95.91% to 96.58%; check the help screen for the version your casino runs.

What buffalo slots are

A buffalo slot is set on the open plains of North America. The bison is the top symbol, usually joined by eagles, wolves, cougars and elk, with card ranks as the low payers and a sunset or canyon behind the reels. The theme's popularity owes a lot to land-based casino machines in the United States, and online studios have built many versions of their own.

What makes the category more than a theme is how consistent the maths model is. Open almost any buffalo game and you will find six reels, four rows, 4,096 ways to win and a free spins round with multiplier wilds. Learn that template once and you can read most of the genre at a glance. Buffalo slots sit within our wider animal slots section, alongside close neighbours such as wolf slots.

Why most buffalo slots use 4,096 ways

On a ways grid there are no fixed lines. A win needs matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from the left, in any row. With 4 rows on each of 6 reels, the number of possible paths is 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 = 4,096.

Here is how that pays in practice. Suppose buffalo symbols land twice on reel 1, once on reel 2 and three times on reel 3, with none on reel 4. That is 2 × 1 × 3 = 6 separate three-of-a-kind ways, each paid at the three-buffalo value. A big screen of stacked buffalo can multiply into dozens of ways at once, which is why these games feel ‘all or nothing’.

Multiplier wilds: where buffalo slots get their swings

In many buffalo games, wilds that land during free spins carry a multiplier. When a winning way passes through more than one multiplier wild, the multipliers are combined, and the help screen says whether they are added together or multiplied.

The difference is large. Take a way paying £1 that passes through a 2× wild and a 3× wild. If the game adds them, the win is £5. If it multiplies them, the win is £6. Add a third wild at 5× and the totals become £10 added or £30 multiplied. Multiplied wilds across thousands of ways are the reason buffalo slots can produce occasional very large rounds – and why most rounds are much smaller. Our guide to how multipliers work in slots covers the maths in more detail.

Buffalo King and Buffalo King Megaways

Pragmatic Play's Buffalo King (2020) is the textbook example: 6 reels, 4 rows, 4,096 ways, high volatility, a 96.06% default RTP and a 93,750× cap. At a 20p stake that cap is £18,750.

Buffalo King Megaways changes the reel heights on every spin, giving up to 200,704 ways. You might expect a bigger ceiling, but its listed cap is 5,000× – £1,000 at 20p. Its RTP is a little higher at 96.52%. That pairing shows why it pays to read each game rather than assume a sequel is the larger version: here the Megaways game has more ways but a much lower top prize.

Buffalo Blitz and Raging Rhino: the 4,096-ways pioneers

Before the Pragmatic games, two titles set the template online. WMS's Raging Rhino (2015) moved an African savannah onto a 6×4, 4,096-ways grid with a 95.91% RTP and high volatility. Playtech's Buffalo Blitz (2016) brought the bison to the same layout, with a 95.96% top RTP and a 94.01% version also in circulation.

That second version matters. On £100 of stakes, 95.96% costs about £4.04 in theory and 94.01% about £5.99. You can't tell which one you are playing from the lobby tile; only the help screen shows it.

Buffalo Rising Megaways and other Megaways herds

Blueprint Gaming's Buffalo Rising Megaways (October 2018) adds a horizontal reel above the main six, a common Megaways design that lets more symbols count towards a way. It offers up to 117,649 ways and a database-listed RTP of 96.5%. Pragmatic Play's Great Rhino Megaways uses the same wildlife idea with up to 200,704 ways, a 96.58% RTP and a 20,000× cap. Megaways herds swing even more than fixed 4,096-ways games, because the number of ways itself changes from spin to spin.

Buffalo slots volatility: what a £20 session looks like

Take £20 at 20p a spin on Buffalo King: 100 spins and £20 staked, with a theoretical cost of about £0.79 at 96.06%. That average hides how the session is likely to go.

  • Many spins will return small ways wins, often less than the 20p stake. Under UK rules these aren't celebrated, because they are net losses.
  • Most of the game's return is concentrated in free spins, so whether the session ends up or down depends mainly on whether free spins arrive and how many multiplier wilds line up.
  • A session of 100 spins can easily pass without free spins at all, and the balance will drift down in the meantime.

How to check a buffalo slot before you play

  1. Open the help screen and confirm the grid and ways count (4,096, or a Megaways range).
  2. Find the RTP line and compare it with the table above; Buffalo Blitz in particular has a lower version.
  3. Read the free spins rules: how many scatters trigger them, how many spins you get, and whether extra scatters add more.
  4. Check whether wild multipliers are added or multiplied together, and what values they can take.
  5. Choose a stake that gives at least 100 spins from your budget, within the £5 limit (£2 if you are 18–24), and set a deposit limit.

Frequently asked questions

Why do buffalo slots have 4,096 ways?

Because most of them use a grid of six reels with four rows each, and 4 multiplied by itself six times is 4,096. On a ways grid there are no fixed paylines: any matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left pay, whichever row they land in. That means more combinations can win at once, especially when stacked buffalo symbols fill several positions. The ways count tells you how wins are formed, not how much the game returns; that is set by the RTP. The 243 ways slots page explains the same idea on a smaller grid.

What is the max win on Buffalo King?

Buffalo King lists a maximum win of 93,750 times your stake. At 10p that would be £9,375, at 20p £18,750, and at the £2 limit for UK players aged 18 to 24 it would be £187,500. Reaching it would need an exceptional free spins round with several high multiplier wilds across many ways, and almost no player will ever see it. The game lists a 96.06% default RTP and high volatility. The Buffalo King review covers how free spins and multipliers work.

Is Buffalo King Megaways better than Buffalo King?

Neither is better in general; they suit different preferences. Buffalo King Megaways has a slightly higher RTP at 96.52% against 96.06%, and up to 200,704 ways, but a much lower listed cap of 5,000× compared with the original's 93,750×. Both are rated high volatility. If a higher published return matters most, the Megaways version edges it; if you want the bigger theoretical top prize, the original has it. The Buffalo King Megaways review compares the two in more depth.

Are buffalo slots high volatility?

Almost all of them are. Buffalo King, Buffalo King Megaways, Buffalo Blitz, Raging Rhino and Great Rhino Megaways are all rated high in our figures. The template concentrates much of the return into free spins with multiplier wilds, so long runs of small wins and losses are normal, broken by occasional larger rounds. If you prefer steadier play, consider a medium-volatility wildlife game instead. The high volatility slots page explains what the rating means for your budget.

Which buffalo slot has the highest RTP?

Among the buffalo games we hold figures for, Buffalo King Megaways lists the highest RTP at 96.52%, followed by Buffalo Rising Megaways at a database-listed 96.5%. Buffalo King lists 96.06% by default and Buffalo Blitz 95.96%, with a 94.01% Blitz version also in use. The rhino relative Great Rhino Megaways lists 96.58%. A casino may run a lower version of any of these, so check the help screen before playing. The guide to finding a slot's RTP shows where to look.

Do multiplier wilds add or multiply in buffalo slots?

It depends on the game, and the help screen will tell you. Some games add the multipliers on a winning way together, so a 2× and a 3× wild give 5×. Others multiply them, giving 6×. The gap grows quickly: with a third 5× wild, adding gives 10× and multiplying gives 30×. Multiplied wilds produce bigger rare wins and generally more volatile results. Always read this rule before playing a new buffalo game. The multiplier entry in our glossary explains the different types.

What is the difference between Buffalo Blitz and Buffalo King?

They share the 6×4, 4,096-ways template but come from different studios. Buffalo Blitz is a Playtech game from 2016 with a 95.96% top RTP, a 94.01% version also in circulation, and high volatility. Buffalo King is a Pragmatic Play game from 2020 with a 96.06% default RTP, high volatility and a 93,750× cap. The higher RTP of Buffalo King's default version gives it a small edge on paper, but check which versions your casino runs. The Buffalo Blitz review covers its features.

Can I play buffalo slots for free in the UK?

Yes, in demo mode at many UK casinos, but only after you register and pass age verification, which licensed operators have required since 2019. Demo play is particularly useful with buffalo slots because their high volatility is hard to picture from the paytable alone. A few hundred demo spins show how long gaps between free spins can be and how often the multiplier wilds actually combine. Demo credits have no cash value. Our free slots page sets out the UK demo rules.

Can I buy free spins in buffalo slots in the UK?

No. Buying a feature is not an option for anyone playing from Great Britain. Some buffalo games sell direct access to free spins in other markets, but the UK versions remove it, so free spins must be triggered by landing the scatter symbols in normal play. Every spin therefore costs exactly what you chose, up to the UK caps of £5 (25 and over) or £2 (18 to 24). The UK slot rules guide lists the bonus buy ban alongside the other design rules.
