The Raging Rhino slot is a 2015 WMS game on a 6×4 grid with 4,096 ways to win, a 95.91% RTP and high volatility. Raging Rhino slot: a big-grid safari classic
Raging Rhino arrived online in 2015 from WMS, the American studio now owned by Light & Wonder. It was one of the games that made the six-reel, 4,096-ways format popular, years before the many buffalo and rhino games that followed it. The setting is the African savannah, with wildlife pay symbols, card-rank low symbols, an acacia-tree wild and a diamond scatter.
It plays very differently from a 20-line slot. Wins come through stacks of the same animal on adjacent reels, and the really meaningful results almost all come from the free spins. If you enjoy animal slots, this is the game many of the newer ones were measured against.
How Raging Rhino’s 4,096 ways and wilds work
Every reel shows four symbols, so there are 4⁶, or 4,096, left-to-right routes. A win needs the same symbol on at least three adjacent reels starting from reel 1, in any position. You can read more about this structure in the ways to win glossary entry.
The wild appears on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5 only. It can’t land on reel 1, because every win has to start there with a real symbol, and it can’t land on reel 6. A wild in the middle substitutes for every pay symbol in that column at once, which on a ways game can multiply the number of winning routes.
Worked example
Suppose the rhino lands twice on reel 1, and reel 2 has one rhino plus one wild. That’s two ways through reel 2. If reel 3 has a single rhino, the count becomes 2 × 2 × 1 = 4 ways of three rhinos. Add a rhino on reel 4 and it becomes 4 ways of four. One wild has doubled the payout of that win.
How to play Raging Rhino
Open the game info and confirm the RTP; 95.91% is the published figure.
Set your total stake. All 4,096 ways are always in play, and UK limits cap stakes at £5 a spin, or £2 for 18–24s.
Spin. British rules require at least 2.5 seconds a spin, with no autoplay or quick-spin.
Watch for diamond scatters, which count anywhere on the reels.
When free spins trigger, they play out automatically; your stake stays fixed at the level that triggered them.
Raging Rhino free spins: the diamond scatter ladder
The diamond is a scatter symbol, so it counts anywhere on the grid and also pays on its own. Land three or more and the free spins start. The number of spins climbs steeply with each extra diamond.

Free spins can be retriggered by landing scatters again during the round. Because each extra diamond is much rarer than the one before, most triggers are the eight-spin version; a six-scatter trigger is an exceptional event. Online versions can differ, so read the help screen at the casino you use.
How the 2x and 3x wild multipliers combine
During free spins, any wild that forms part of a win is given a random 2x or 3x multiplier. If a winning way passes through more than one wild, the multipliers multiply each other rather than add together.
Wilds in the way
Possible combined multiplier
1 wild
2x or 3x
2 wilds
4x, 6x or 9x
3 wilds
8x up to 27x
4 wilds
16x up to 81x
This is where the volatility comes from. A free spin with wilds on reels 2, 3 and 4, plus stacks of the same animal, can pay a big multiple of the stake, while a spin without wilds pays only base values. Most bonus rounds land somewhere in between, and some pay less than the stake used to reach them.
Raging Rhino RTP and high volatility in practice
A 95.91% RTP means the game keeps £4.09 of every £100 staked on average over the very long run. Over 200 spins at 40p, £80 staked, that’s an average cost of about £3.27. In reality the spread is wide: one session might end £60 down without a bonus, another well ahead after a six-wild free spin.
High volatility suits players who set a fixed budget and accept that the base game will often grind it down slowly. A smaller stake gives the free spins more opportunities to arrive. Never raise the stake to win back losses; the next spin has the same odds as the last. Our guide to slot bankroll management has worked budgets.
Is there a published Raging Rhino max win?
WMS and Light & Wonder don’t publish a max win figure we can verify for the online game, so we don’t quote one. With multipliers that can combine to 81x on a single way, the theoretical ceiling is high, but that combination needs wilds on all four middle reels during free spins alongside large stacks, which is extraordinarily rare. If a cap applies, it’s stated in the game rules on the help screen.
Raging Rhino and UK slot rules
In Great Britain, Raging Rhino runs under the same rules as every online slot: a minimum of 2.5 seconds a spin, no autoplay or turbo, no buying the free spins, and your net position shown on screen. Stakes are capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for 18–24s. A demo is available at some sites after age verification, which is a sensible way to see the scatter ladder in action before staking money. See our UK slot rules guide.
Buffalo King copies the format with a slightly higher RTP. Buffalo Blitz is Playtech’s version of the same idea. Great Rhino Megaways swaps the fixed grid for changing reel heights and many more ways. WMS itself has since released Raging Rhino Megaways and other follow-ups; check each one’s figures separately.

Drawbacks
95.91% RTP is below many newer games
High volatility can drain a budget before the bonus arrives

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Raging Rhino?
Raging Rhino has a published RTP of 95.91%, which means it returns £95.91 for every £100 staked on average over a very large number of spins. The house edge is therefore 4.09%. That’s a little below the 96% many players use as a rough benchmark. Casinos may run other versions, so open the help screen to confirm the figure. Our page on what a good RTP is puts the number in context.
How many free spins can you get on Raging Rhino?
Under the standard rules, three diamond scatters award 8 free spins, four award 15, five award 20 and six award 50. More scatters during the round can retrigger extra spins. Most triggers are the three-scatter version, because each additional diamond is much rarer. During the free spins, wilds that form part of a win carry 2x or 3x multipliers. See how free spins retrigger for how retriggers usually work.
How do multipliers work on Raging Rhino?
During free spins, every wild that is part of a winning way gets a random multiplier of 2x or 3x. When a win passes through two or more wilds, the multipliers are multiplied together, so two wilds give 4x, 6x or 9x, and four wilds can reach 81x. Base game wilds don’t carry multipliers. The multipliers are the main reason free spins can pay far more than the base game. Our guide to multipliers in slots covers other types.
Is Raging Rhino high volatility?
Yes, Raging Rhino is high volatility. The base game produces frequent small wins across its 4,096 ways, but many are worth less than the stake, and the large results depend on the free spins and their multiplying wilds. You can go a long time without a bonus. Choose a small stake that gives your budget plenty of spins. Our list of high volatility slots compares it with other swingy games.
When was Raging Rhino released?
Raging Rhino was released online in 2015 by WMS, the American slot developer that is now part of Light & Wonder. It helped popularise the six-reel, 4,096-ways layout that later games such as Buffalo King and Buffalo Blitz also use. Its age shows in the visuals, but the maths model is still widely played. Our page on whether new slots are better than old ones looks at what has changed.
Can you play Raging Rhino on mobile?
Yes. The online version of Raging Rhino runs in mobile browsers and in casino apps that carry Light & Wonder games, using the same account and balance as the desktop site. The six-reel grid is quite busy on a small phone screen, so landscape mode can help. All UK rules, including stake limits and minimum spin time, apply on mobile too. Read our guide to playing slots on mobile for practical tips.
Why can’t wilds land on reel 1 in Raging Rhino?
In Raging Rhino, wilds appear on reels 2 to 5 only. Every win on a ways game must start from reel 1 with a real symbol, so a wild there would add little, and keeping reel 6 wild-free limits how often the longest wins form. The arrangement is part of how the game’s RTP is balanced. Our glossary entry on the wild symbol explains common wild rules on other slots.
Is there a Raging Rhino demo in the UK?
Some UK casinos offer a Raging Rhino demo, but you’ll need to verify your age first. Free-to-play games have required age verification in Great Britain since 2019. The demo uses play credits and the same maths as the real version, so you can see how often scatters land and how the multipliers combine without spending money. It won’t predict real results. Our guide to testing a slot in demo mode suggests what to watch.
What’s the difference between Raging Rhino and Raging Rhino Megaways?
Raging Rhino uses a fixed 6×4 grid with 4,096 ways, while the Megaways follow-up from the same group changes the number of symbols on each reel every spin, giving far more possible ways. The Megaways version also has its own RTP, volatility and features, so don’t assume the figures carry over. Check its help screen separately. Our guide on how Megaways works explains the changing-reel system.
