What kind of slot is Retro Tapes?

Retro Tapes is a grid game rather than a reel-and-line slot. Push Gaming, the studio behind Jammin’ Jars, released it in November 2022 with a music theme built around cassette tapes, mixtapes and the hits of a bygone chart show. Wins come from clusters, wilds stick around, and the free spins round is called Top Charts.

If you have played Jammin’ Jars, the DNA will be familiar: cascading clusters, wilds that stay and multiply, and a free spins round where the grid fills with collectables. Retro Tapes adds Instant Prize symbols and a Magnet that pulls symbols together, which gives it a character of its own.

The cassette-tape theme

Every paying symbol is a cassette, colour-coded from grey and blue at the low end, through purple and green, to orange and red at the top of the paytable. The wild is a Wild Tape, and the background and soundtrack lean into a nostalgic, chart-countdown mood. It is a theme that will appeal to adults who remember rewinding a tape with a pencil, and it sits naturally among our music slots.

How cluster pays work on the Retro Tapes grid

A win forms when five or more identical cassettes touch each other horizontally or vertically. Paylines don’t exist here, so position only matters in terms of adjacency. Our page on cluster pays covers the general idea, and the cluster pays slots hub compares other games that use it.

After every win, the winning cassettes are removed, the symbols above fall down and new ones drop in from the top. This cascading reels process repeats until no new cluster forms, which means one paid spin can include several wins in a row.

Reading the paytable: cluster size matters

Payouts are set by cluster size bands rather than a fixed number of symbols. A small cluster of a low cassette pays a fraction of your stake, while a very large cluster of the red cassette pays hundreds of times more. That gap is the reason big cascading sequences drive most of the game’s return. The paytable inside the game lists every band at your current stake.

Wild Tapes: sticky and multiplying

The Wild Tape is the heart of Retro Tapes. When it is part of a winning cluster, it stays in place for the following cascade instead of being removed, and its multiplier increases by 1 each time it contributes to another win. This is a classic sticky wild with a multiplier attached. A long cascade with one Wild Tape in the middle can therefore pay 2x, then 3x, then 4x on successive clusters.

The Magnet and Cluster Link

The Magnet chooses symbol types and drags them into a group, often manufacturing a win from symbols that were spread out. Instant Prize symbols carry their own stake multiples; when enough of them link together, the Cluster Link pays their combined value. Both mechanics help explain why the base game produces occasional large cascades even though most spins pay little.

Top Charts free spins in Retro Tapes

Three or more Wild Tapes on the grid trigger the Top Charts free spins, and landing more tapes awards more spins. Any Wild Tapes and Instant Prizes already on the grid stay in place as the round begins, so a trigger that arrives at the end of a busy cascade can start with a head start.

During Top Charts, empty positions spin to land special symbols rather than ordinary cassettes. Depending on what lands, you can get more Wild Tapes, Wild Multipliers that power up those tapes, Instant Prizes that hold their place, Magnets that pull prizes together, extra spins, or blank tapes that do nothing. Instant Prize clusters are totalled when the round ends.

  1. Land three or more Wild Tapes in the base game to start Top Charts.
  2. Existing Wild Tapes and Instant Prizes lock in place.
  3. Each free spin fills empty positions with bonus symbols.
  4. Wild Multipliers boost the Wild Tapes and convert them into Instant Prizes.
  5. Extra Spin symbols add spins; blanks fill space without paying.
  6. When the spins run out, the Instant Prize values are added up and paid.

Sources disagree on the exact number of spins for each trigger size, so read the rules screen at your casino. The structure resembles a hold and win round more than a classic free spins feature.

Retro Tapes RTP: why the version matters

Retro Tapes exists in three RTP settings: 96.47%, 95.47% and 94.46%. The casino chooses which one it runs, and the difference is real money over a session. Our RTP range entry explains why studios offer several versions.

RTP versionExpected return on £200Theoretical costExtra cost vs top version
96.47%£192.94£7.06£0.00
95.47%£190.94£9.06£2.00
94.46%£188.92£11.08£4.02

£200 staked is just 400 spins at 50p, or 200 spins at £1. On the lowest version, the theoretical cost is more than half as much again as on the top one. High volatility means a single session can still land anywhere, but over many sessions the version you play on shapes what you lose. The 10,000x max win in context

Retro Tapes caps wins at 10,000 times your stake. At 20p that is £2,000; at £1 it is £10,000; at the UK’s £5 maximum for over-25s it is £50,000. The cap is reached only in exceptional Top Charts rounds where Wild Tapes are multiplied heavily and converted into large Instant Prizes. Very few players will ever see it. Our page on high max win slots explains how to read these ceilings sensibly.

UK rules for Retro Tapes

Outside Great Britain, Retro Tapes is sold with bonus buy options. They are not available here: Top Charts can only be triggered by landing Wild Tapes. Stakes are capped at £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for 18–24s, every spin lasts at least 2.5 seconds, and autoplay and turbo are switched off. Demo play is available only once your age is verified. The detail is in our UK slot rules guide.

Jammin’ Jars 2 and the original are the closest relatives, with roaming multiplier wilds instead of tapes. Reactoonz from Play’n GO is a different take on a cascading cluster grid. All four are high volatility, so the choice comes down to theme and how much you value the RTP version on offer.

Retro Tapes pros, cons and who it suits

Advantages

  • Wild Tapes that stick and multiply give cascades a sense of momentum.
  • Instant Prizes and Magnets add variety beyond simple cluster wins.
  • A clear 10,000x max win and a published top RTP of 96.47%.

Drawbacks

  • Three RTP versions, with the lowest noticeably more expensive.
  • High volatility means many spins pay little or nothing.
  • The number of special symbols takes a few sessions to read comfortably.

It suits players who enjoy grid slots and building features, and who are comfortable with long dry spells. If you’d prefer the same studio on a traditional reel set, Razor Shark is the obvious alternative.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Retro Tapes?

Retro Tapes has a top RTP of 96.47%, and Push Gaming also supplies versions at 95.47% and 94.46%. The casino decides which version to run, and the game’s rules screen shows the live figure. On £100 staked, the theoretical cost is about £3.53 on the top version and about £5.54 on the lowest, a difference that adds up over repeated sessions. It is worth checking before you play. Our guides to RTP and finding a slot’s RTP show where to look.

What is the max win on Retro Tapes?

The max win on Retro Tapes is 10,000 times your stake. At a 50p stake that would be £5,000, and at £2 it would be £20,000. The cap is reached only in very rare Top Charts free spins rounds where Wild Tapes build large multipliers and are converted into big Instant Prizes, so it is a theoretical ceiling rather than anything to expect. Most sessions finish with a small fraction of that or a loss. Our max win glossary entry explains how studios set and display these caps.

How do you trigger free spins on Retro Tapes?

You trigger the Top Charts free spins by landing three or more Wild Tape symbols on the grid, and more Wild Tapes award more spins. Wild Tapes and Instant Prizes already in place carry into the round. During the bonus, empty spaces spin for special symbols such as Wild Multipliers, Magnets, Instant Prizes and Extra Spins. Bonus buys aren’t available in Great Britain, so this is the only route in. The exact spin counts are in the game rules. Our free spins feature entry covers how such rounds generally work.

How do Wild Tapes work in Retro Tapes?

Wild Tapes substitute for the regular cassette symbols, and when one helps form a winning cluster it sticks in place instead of being cleared. Each time it contributes to a further win, its multiplier goes up by 1, so a single wild can pay 2x, 3x and more across one cascade sequence. A Wild Multiplier symbol can then boost all the Wild Tapes on screen and turn them into Instant Prizes. This makes long cascades valuable. Read about sticky wilds and multipliers for the general principles.

Is Retro Tapes high volatility?

Yes, Retro Tapes is rated high volatility. Many spins pay nothing or less than the stake, and a large part of the game’s return comes from occasional long cascades and strong Top Charts rounds. Over a short session you are more likely to finish below the theoretical return than above it, and losing the whole session budget is a normal outcome. A lower stake gives more spins for the same money. See our volatility guide and the high volatility slots page for comparisons.

How many symbols do you need for a win in Retro Tapes?

You need a cluster of five or more matching cassette symbols touching each other horizontally or vertically. Diagonal contact doesn’t count. Bigger clusters pay more, with the paytable split into bands by cluster size, and the red cassette pays the most. After each win the cluster disappears and new symbols cascade in, which can create another win from the same paid spin. Our guide to how cluster pays works explains the counting rules in more detail with examples.

Can I play Retro Tapes for free in the UK?

Yes, but UK-licensed casinos can only offer the demo version after they have verified that you are 18 or over, a rule in place since May 2019. That means you will need to register and pass age checks first. Demo play uses the same game maths with play money, so it’s a sensible way to learn how Wild Tapes and the Magnet behave before staking anything. Our walkthrough on how to test a slot in demo mode suggests what to track while you watch.

Is Retro Tapes like Jammin’ Jars?

Retro Tapes shares a lot with Jammin’ Jars: both are high-volatility Push Gaming cluster games with cascades and wilds that stick and multiply. The differences are the theme, the grid and the extra symbols. Retro Tapes adds Instant Prizes, a Magnet and a Top Charts round that behaves partly like hold and win, while Jammin’ Jars relies on moving jar wilds. Jammin’ Jars has a 20,000x max win compared with 10,000x here. Compare them on our Jammin’ Jars review and the cluster pays slots hub.
