Wild Toro slot: key facts

Wild Toro is one of ELK Studios’ earliest well-known games and the start of a series the studio still builds on. Released in 2016, it predates the big-ways and collector mechanics of later ELK titles such as Nitropolis and Pirots. Instead, it puts one character at the centre: a bull whose walk across the reels drives almost every feature.

Toro, the matadors and Diaz Jr.

The game is set in a Spanish bullring with bright, stylised animation. Toro is the hero, and ELK casts the matadors as the opposition, led by Diaz Jr., described by the studio as the sneaky son of Captain Diaz. The bull always comes out on top in the story: when he catches up with a matador, the matador is sent flying and the reels are left with wilds.

That narrative is more than decoration, because it describes the feature logic. Toro moves; matadors are targets; collisions create wild symbols. Once you see one sequence, the rest of the game makes sense.

Why Wild Toro has 178 ways on a 5x4 grid

A 5×4 grid could in theory support 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 = 1,024 ways if every position on adjacent reels connected. Wild Toro does not use that system. ELK describes its 178 ways as 178 connecting paylines: a fixed set of paths across the reels, much larger than a classic 20 or 25-line game but smaller than an all-ways slot.

SystemPaths across the reelsExample
Classic paylines10–25Book of Dead has 10
Wild Toro178 connecting linesFixed set on a 5×4 grid
All ways on 5×3243Narcos
All ways on 5×41,024Every adjacent position connects

Your stake covers all 178 paths on every spin, and wins pay from left to right. The paylines vs ways guide explains the different systems in more depth.

How Toro’s walking wild works

Toro is a walking wild. When he appears, he moves from reel to reel, and each step generates a respin, so a single paid spin can turn into a short sequence of extra spins at no further cost. While he is on the reels he substitutes for paying symbols like any wild.

The interesting part is what happens when he meets a matador. Toro charges, knocks the matador off and leaves a path of wilds behind him. Those extra wilds can stay in play for the following respin, which is where most of the base game’s bigger wins come from. A walk that passes no matadors adds only Toro himself; one that clears several leaves a reel set scattered with wilds.

The Matador Respin Challenge

Three matadors on screen trigger the Matador Respin Challenge. ELK describes it as giving extra chances for the matadors to meet Toro. In practice it is a respin feature: the reels spin again at no extra cost, giving Toro the chance to arrive and turn the matadors into wilds. The help screen sets out exactly which positions are held. If Toro appears, the earlier walking-wild logic takes over; if he does not, the challenge ends with whatever the respins paid.

Toro Goes Wild bonus and free spins

ELK lists a Toro Goes Wild bonus game and free spins among the game’s features. The developer page does not give the trigger or the number of spins, so the in-game help screen is the place to check those details at your casino. As the name suggests, the bonus is built around Toro’s wild behaviour, and like most free spins features it carries a large share of the game’s higher-paying outcomes.

Because the maximum win is capped at 2,250x, even the best bonus rounds sit within a range that is easier to picture than the 10,000x-plus caps common today. That makes Wild Toro’s top end less extreme, though medium–high volatility still means plenty of spins pass without a feature.

How to play Wild Toro

  1. Open the game information to check the RTP, the paytable and the help pages for the bonus trigger.
  2. Set your stake. In the UK the limit is £5 a spin at 25 and over and £2 at 18 to 24.
  3. Spin the 5×4 reels; wins pay left to right across the 178 connecting lines.
  4. If Toro lands, watch him walk from reel to reel, earning a respin with each step.
  5. When he reaches a matador, the matador is knocked off and a trail of wilds is left behind.
  6. Three matadors start the Matador Respin Challenge for extra chances to meet Toro.

Wild Toro RTP: 96.4% across a session

Wild Toro publishes an RTP of 96.4%, slightly above the 96% many players use as a benchmark. The house edge is therefore 3.6%: on average, 3.6p of every £1 staked is kept over the long run.

SessionTotal stakedAverage cost
120 spins at 50p£60£2.16
200 spins at 20p£40£1.44
50 spins at £2£100£3.60

Results on any single session can be far higher or lower, but the average is useful for setting expectations. If a game shows a different figure in its help screen, that version applies. Our house edge entry explains the relationship between the two numbers.

Wild Toro max win: 2,250x in pounds

StakeMax win
20p£450
50p£1,125
£1£2,250
£2£4,500
£5£11,250

A 2,250x cap is modest by current standards. It still requires the best possible combination of wild trails and bonus outcomes, so it remains a rare event. Our page comparing high max win slots shows where Wild Toro sits against newer games.

What changes in the UK version of Wild Toro

ELK lists Betting Strategies among Wild Toro’s features. These are automated staking patterns that run across a series of spins, and they depend on automatic play, which UK rules do not allow for online slots. Expect the UK version to have no autoplay, no turbo, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no celebration of returns below your stake and a visible net position. Stake caps of £5 and £2 apply, and demos are available only after age verification. Our page on why there is no autoplay on UK slots explains the reasons.

Wild Toro sequels

Wild Toro proved popular enough for ELK to continue the story, starting with Wild Toro II. Sequels keep Toro and the bullring but change the grid, features and maths, so check each game’s help screen rather than assuming the original’s 96.4% RTP or 2,250x cap. See more of the studio’s games on our ELK Studios page.

Narcos and Jack and the Beanstalk both use walking wilds and make good alternatives if you like the mechanic. Vikings Go Berzerk shares Wild Toro’s 2016 vintage and 5×4 grid, with a rage-meter bonus instead. Wild Toro has the highest published RTP of the four.

Wild Toro pros, cons and who it suits

Advantages

  • Walking-wild bull is easy to understand and fun to watch
  • 96.4% RTP is above average
  • Matador collisions create wild trails in the base game
  • Lower cap means a less extreme top end

Drawbacks

  • 2,250x max win is low next to modern games
  • Bonus details are only in the in-game help
  • Betting Strategies not usable in the UK

Wild Toro suits players who like a character-driven base game and a solid RTP without the very long odds of 10,000x-cap games. Players chasing the highest ceilings will find more in the newer ELK titles or our high volatility slots list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Wild Toro?

The published RTP of Wild Toro is 96.4%, which means an average return of £96.40 for every £100 staked over a very long run and a house edge of 3.6%. For example, 120 spins at 50p, £60 in total, cost an average of £2.16. Single sessions can end far above or below that because the game is medium–high volatility. Check the help screen at your casino to confirm the version. Our page on the highest RTP slots in the UK gives more context.

How does the walking wild work in Wild Toro?

In Wild Toro, the bull is a walking wild that moves from reel to reel and generates a respin with each step. While on the reels, he substitutes for paying symbols. When he reaches a matador, he knocks the matador off and leaves a path of wilds behind, which can boost the next respin. The sequence ends when Toro walks off the reels. Each respin is free within the paid spin. Our glossary entry on walking wilds explains the mechanic across other games.

What is the Matador Respin Challenge?

The Matador Respin Challenge is a Wild Toro feature triggered by three matadors on screen. ELK describes it as giving additional chances for the matadors to meet Toro. If the bull arrives during the respins, he knocks matadors off and leaves wilds, as in the base game; if he does not, the feature ends with whatever the respins paid. It costs nothing extra beyond your original spin. See how slot features trigger for why these events are random.

What is the max win on Wild Toro?

The max win on Wild Toro is 2,250x your stake. At 50p that is £1,125, at £1 it is £2,250 and at the UK maximum of £5 for players aged 25 and over it is £11,250. That cap is low by modern standards, where many slots advertise 10,000x or more, but it still requires the best combination of wild trails and bonus outcomes. Our guide to slot max wins explains how caps are built into a game’s maths.

How many ways to win does Wild Toro have?

Wild Toro has 178 ways to win, which ELK describes as 178 connecting paylines across a 5×4 grid. That is many more paths than a classic 10 or 20-line slot but fewer than the 1,024 a 5×4 all-ways game would have. Your stake covers all 178 lines on every spin, and wins pay left to right. Walking wilds and matador trails help complete more of those lines. Our paylines glossary entry explains how lines are counted.

When was Wild Toro released?

Wild Toro was released by ELK Studios in 2016, which makes it one of the studio’s earlier hits and older than ELK games such as Cygnus, Nitropolis and Pirots. It has stayed in many UK lobbies because its walking-wild bull is easy to follow and its RTP of 96.4% compares well with newer games. ELK has since continued the series with sequels that use different maths. Our guide on whether new slots are better than old discusses older games.

Can you use Betting Strategies on Wild Toro in the UK?

No, you should not expect Betting Strategies on Wild Toro in the UK. ELK lists them as a feature, but they adjust stakes automatically across a run of spins, and UK rules have banned autoplay on online slots since October 2021. Every spin in a UK lobby must be started manually and take at least 2.5 seconds. Those rules are designed to slow play and keep players in control of each stake. Our page on UK slot game design rules covers the details.

Is there a Wild Toro 2?

Yes, ELK Studios followed the original with Wild Toro II, and the series has continued since. The sequels keep Toro and the bullring setting but change the grid, feature set, RTP and maximum win, so the figures on this page apply only to the 2016 original. If your casino lists more than one Wild Toro game, compare the help screens before choosing. Our guide to how slot sequels differ explains what typically changes from one instalment to the next.
