ELK Studios slots are made by a Stockholm developer founded in 2013 and known for mechanics first: Avalanche cascades, walking wilds, grids that expand to millions of ways and the bird-led CollectR system in Pirots. It has more than 120 slots on reference listings. Two numbers deserve attention before you play: Pirots and Pirots 2 publish a 94% RTP, below most of ELK’s range, and the X-iter feature you may see elsewhere is not offered in Great Britain.
ELK Studios was founded in 2013 in Stockholm and holds Gambling Commission account 40844.
Its signature mechanics are Avalanche cascades, Free Drops, walking wilds and the X-iter menu, which is not offered to British players.
Pirots and Pirots 2 publish a 94% RTP, against 96.1%–96.4% on Wild Toro, Nitropolis and Cygnus.
A huge ways count, such as Nitropolis’s 85,155,840, describes the grid at full size, not a typical spin.

ELK Studios slots explained
ELK Studios is a Swedish slot developer founded in 2013 and headquartered in Stockholm. It is a mechanics-first studio: rather than reskinning a familiar format, most ELK releases are built around a feature that changes the grid while you play, whether that is symbols cascading away, a wild walking across the reels or rows unlocking until the ways count runs into millions.
That ambition makes ELK games interesting, but also harder to read at a glance. The help screen is longer than average, and the maths varies more between titles than it does at studios with a single house style. This page sets out what to look for.

The GB licence lets UK-licensed casinos offer ELK games; the casino you play at must hold its own licence too. Our guide on checking a slot site’s licence shows how to look both up.
ELK Studios mechanics: a quick glossary
Avalanche
ELK’s cascading-reels system. Winning symbols are removed and new ones fall into the gaps, so one paid spin can produce a chain of wins. See how cascading reels work.
Free Drops
ELK’s name for its free-spins-style bonus rounds in games built on avalanches. The help screen of each game explains how its drops are counted and what carries over between them.
Walking wilds
A wild that moves one position across the reels on each respin, paying wherever it lands until it walks off the grid. Wild Toro made the idea famous with its bull wild. Our walking wild glossary entry covers the mechanic across studios.
CollectR
The Pirots system. There are no paylines or ways: bird characters move around the grid collecting matching gems or amber, and the grid can grow to 8×8 during play.
X-iter
A menu of paid options for entering features directly or boosting spins. It is a form of feature buy, which is not offered to players in Great Britain, so UK versions of ELK games don’t show it.
Four of the five are medium–high volatility, so ELK’s range is less spread out than some studios’. The bigger difference is the RTP, covered next.
Why Pirots’ 94% RTP matters
Pirots and Pirots 2 publish an RTP of 94%, about two and a half points below Wild Toro’s 96.4%. That gap is easy to miss when the games are this colourful, so here it is in pounds, at 25p a spin over 400 spins, £100 staked:
Game
RTP
Expected cost
Wild Toro
96.4%
About £3.60
Cygnus or Nitropolis
96.1%
About £3.90
Pirots or Pirots 2
94%
About £6.00
Over a long run, the Pirots games are expected to cost roughly two-thirds more than Wild Toro for the same play. That doesn’t make them unfair; the figure is published, and some players accept a higher cost for a feature they enjoy. It does mean you are paying more for that enjoyment. For context on 94%, see what counts as a good RTP.
Nitropolis and the 85 million ways question
Nitropolis starts as a 6×4 grid with 4,096 ways. Extra rows can unlock during play, and at its fullest the game advertises 85,155,840 ways. Cygnus works similarly, growing from 4,096 to 262,144 ways as its reels expand from four rows to as many as eight.
Those maximum counts describe the grid at full size, which is rare. On a typical spin you are playing the base 4,096. And more ways does not mean more money back: the RTP stays at 96.1% whatever the ways count, so a game with millions of ways at full stretch returns the same on average as a 20-line slot with the same RTP. The paylines vs ways to win explainer shows how ways are counted.
How UK versions of ELK Studios slots differ
Because the X-iter menu is a feature buy, it is removed for British players; you reach Free Drops and bonus rounds only through normal play. The other Great Britain rules apply as they do to every slot:
Maximum £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over, £2 for those aged 18 to 24.
A minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin, with no autoplay, turbo or slam-stop.
No celebratory effects for a return smaller than the stake, and your net position always visible.
Demo play once your age has been checked.
How to size up an ELK Studios slot before playing
Open the game’s help screen and read the RTP first; note whether it is 94% or nearer 96%.
Find the volatility rating and the max win.
Read how the main mechanic works: Avalanche, walking wild, CollectR or expanding rows.
Play the age-verified demo for a couple of hundred spins to see how often the feature triggers.
Set a session budget and a stake that gives you at least 200 spins from it.

Frequently asked questions
Where is ELK Studios based?
ELK Studios is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, where it was founded in 2013. It operates through two licensed companies, ELKAB Studios AB and ELK Studios Malta Ltd, and holds Gambling Commission account 40844 for Great Britain and Malta licence MGA/B2B/605/2018. Reference listings put its catalogue at more than 120 slots. Our providers hub compares ELK with other Swedish studios such as Thunderkick and Quickspin.
What is the RTP of Pirots?
Pirots publishes an RTP of 94%, as does Pirots 2. That is lower than most of ELK’s other well-known games, which sit between 96.1% and 96.4%. In pounds, £100 staked on a 94% game has an expected long-run cost of about £6, against about £3.60 on Wild Toro. Casinos can run other versions, so check the help screen. Our Pirots review explains the CollectR feature and what the lower RTP means for a session.
What is the best ELK Studios slot?
Wild Toro is the best-known ELK slot and has the highest RTP in our table at 96.4%, with medium–high volatility and a walking bull wild. Nitropolis and Cygnus suit players who like grids that grow, both at 96.1%. Pirots is popular for its bird-collection mechanic, but its 94% RTP makes it more expensive to play over time. Pick by which mechanic you enjoy and how much cost you accept. Our Wild Toro review covers the studio’s signature game.
What is X-iter on ELK slots?
X-iter is ELK’s menu of paid options that let players elsewhere buy direct entry into features or boost their spins at a higher cost. It is a type of feature buy, and feature buys are not offered to players in Great Britain, so UK versions of ELK games don’t include it. Here, bonus rounds come only from normal spins at stakes within the £5 and £2 limits. The rule is explained in can you buy bonuses on UK slots.
How do walking wilds work in Wild Toro?
In Wild Toro, the bull is a walking wild: when it lands, it moves one reel across the grid on each respin, substituting for other symbols and paying wherever it lands, until it walks off the edge. Each step triggers another respin at no extra cost, so a single paid spin can produce several wins. The game is medium–high volatility with a 96.4% RTP and a 2,250x cap. Our sticky wild slots page compares related wild mechanics.
Does Nitropolis really have 85 million ways?
Only at full size. Nitropolis starts each spin as a 6×4 grid with 4,096 ways, and extra rows can unlock during play, taking the maximum to 85,155,840 ways. Most spins never get close. The ways count also doesn’t change the return: the RTP stays at 96.1% whatever the grid size, so more ways means a different spread of wins, not more money back on average. Our ways to win glossary entry explains how ways are counted.
Are ELK Studios slots high volatility?
Most are medium–high. In our table, Wild Toro, Cygnus, Nitropolis and Pirots are all medium–high, and Pirots 2 is high. That means features carry a large share of the return and dry spells are common, though less extreme than on studios such as Nolimit City. Choose a stake that gives you enough spins to see a feature or two. Our guide to playing high volatility slots explains how to size a budget for this kind of game.
Is ELK Studios licensed in the UK?
Yes. ELK Studios holds Gambling Commission account 40844, which allows UK-licensed casinos to offer its games. Every ELK title sold in Great Britain must meet the Commission’s technical standards, including RNG testing and the game design rules on spin speed, autoplay and celebratory effects. The studio is also licensed in Malta under MGA/B2B/605/2018. Our guide to who tests UK slots explains how games are certified before release.
Can I play ELK Studios slots for free in the UK?
Yes, as demos, but only after a casino has verified your age, as required in Great Britain since May 2019. A demo uses play credits, so nothing is won or lost, and it is especially useful for ELK games because their mechanics take a few hundred spins to understand. The real-money version can run a different RTP from the demo, so check its help screen before you stake. Our guide to testing a slot in demo mode suggests what to watch for.
