Microgaming slots, from Thunderstruck and Avalon to Immortal Romance and Mega Moolah, are still widely played in the UK, but the games now come from Games Global, which took over Microgaming’s games and distribution business in 2022. This page traces the catalogue era by era, sets out verified RTPs for the best-known titles, and shows how to find them today.
Microgaming was an Isle of Man software pioneer founded in 1994; its games and distribution passed to Games Global in 2022.
Most lobbies now list former Microgaming slots under Games Global, though some still use the old name.
Verified RTPs across the classic catalogue range from 88.12% (Mega Moolah) to 96.86% (Immortal Romance).
Older 9-line games and newer 243-ways games behave very differently, even under the same brand.

What happened to Microgaming slots?
Microgaming was founded on the Isle of Man in 1994 and became one of the first companies to build software for online casinos. For two decades its name sat on some of the most recognisable slots in Britain. In 2022, Games Global, also based on the Isle of Man, acquired Microgaming’s games portfolio and its distribution business. The games themselves carried on; the company supplying them changed.
That is why you will now find Thunderstruck II or Immortal Romance listed under Games Global at most UK casinos, while a few lobbies still show the Microgaming label out of habit. Both refer to the same games. Our Games Global slots page covers the current business and its partner studios in detail; this page is about the Microgaming catalogue and how its eras differ.
4,096-ways game from Fortune Factory, released as Games Global took over
Reading down the table, you can see the catalogue move from in-house games with a handful of lines, through the 243-ways era, to a model where independent partner studios supplied much of the new content through Microgaming’s Quickfire network.
The 9-line classics: Thunderstruck and Break da Bank Again
Early Microgaming hits used very few lines. Thunderstruck and Break da Bank Again both run on nine paylines across five reels and three rows. Fewer lines mean fewer ways to land a win on any spin, so a larger share of spins pay nothing.
The two games show how different that can feel. Thunderstruck is rated medium volatility with a 96.1% RTP, while Break da Bank Again is rated high with 95.43%. On 300 spins at 20p (£60 staked), the average cost is about £2.34 on Thunderstruck and £2.74 on Break da Bank Again, but Break da Bank Again will usually spread those results much more widely, with more empty stretches and occasional bigger wins.
The 243-ways era: Thunderstruck II and Immortal Romance
Microgaming’s most enduring games switched from paylines to 243 ways to win, paying for matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right in any row position. Thunderstruck II and Immortal Romance are the two best-known examples, and both added tiered free spins features that unlock as you trigger the bonus more times.
Their figures are among the strongest in the classic catalogue: Thunderstruck II at 96.65% RTP with an 8,000× max win, and Immortal Romance at 96.86% with a 12,150× max win, rated medium and medium-high volatility respectively. Mega Moolah’s much lower figure reflects the fact that part of every stake feeds its networked progressive jackpots, money that comes back to players only in the rare event of a jackpot win. Whether that trade is worth it is a personal choice; the are jackpot slots worth it page sets out the arguments. The house edge applies to every game in the table, and losses are the likely result over time.
How UK rules changed the Microgaming classics
Many of these games were designed when autoplay and quick-spin settings were standard. The versions now supplied to British casinos follow current rules, so they may feel slower and plainer than you remember.
Spins run for a minimum of 2.5 seconds, without autoplay, turbo or slam-stop.
Returns below your stake are not celebrated with sounds or animations.
Balance and net position on screen at all times.
Bonus rounds cannot be bought by British players.
Stake caps of £5 per spin (25 and over) or £2 (18 to 24).
Search by title first, for example Thunderstruck II or Immortal Romance.
If you prefer filters, choose Games Global; some casinos still offer a Microgaming filter.
Open the info screen and compare the RTP with the figures in the table above.
For Mega Moolah, check the jackpot rules and how the jackpot game is triggered.
Set a stake and session budget before your first spin.

Frequently asked questions
Does Microgaming still exist?
The Microgaming games still exist, but in 2022 Games Global acquired Microgaming’s games portfolio and distribution business, so new and existing titles are now supplied by Games Global. Both companies are based on the Isle of Man. In practice, the games you remember, such as Thunderstruck II and Immortal Romance, are still available at many UK casinos, just under a different supplier name. Some lobbies continue to use the Microgaming label. Our Games Global slots page explains the current business.
What are the best Microgaming slots?
The most popular Microgaming-era slots include Immortal Romance, Thunderstruck II, Thunderstruck, Avalon, Break da Bank Again and Mega Moolah. On verified figures, Immortal Romance has the highest RTP at 96.86% and a 12,150× max win, with Thunderstruck II close behind at 96.65%. Mega Moolah stands apart because of its progressive jackpots and lower 88.12% RTP. Which is best depends on your taste for volatility and jackpots. Read our Immortal Romance and Thunderstruck II reviews for detail.
Why does my casino list Microgaming slots under Games Global?
Because Games Global now supplies them. When it acquired Microgaming’s games and distribution business in 2022, the catalogue moved with it, and most casinos updated their provider filters. Some still show the Microgaming name, and a few show the original partner studio, such as Triple Edge or Gameburger, instead. The game is the same whichever label appears. The quickest way to find a title is to type its name into the lobby search. Our Games Global page lists the partner studios.
Why is Mega Moolah’s RTP so low?
Mega Moolah’s verified RTP is 88.12%, well below most slots, because a slice of every stake goes to its networked progressive jackpots rather than to regular wins. That money is paid back only when someone lands a jackpot, which is very rare. So on an ordinary session you can expect lower returns than on a standard slot: about £23.76 average cost per £200 staked, against around £7 to £9 on the other classics. Our Mega Moolah review and how progressive jackpots work explain more.
When was Microgaming founded?
Microgaming was founded in 1994 on the Isle of Man, making it one of the earliest companies to build online casino software. Its slots became familiar to UK players through the 2000s, with verified release dates including Thunderstruck in 2004, Avalon in 2006 and Break da Bank Again in 2008. In 2022 its games and distribution business passed to Games Global. For a wider view of how the industry developed, read the history of online slots in the UK.
What is the difference between Thunderstruck and Thunderstruck II?
Thunderstruck, released in 2004, is a 9-payline game with a 96.1% RTP and medium volatility. Thunderstruck II switched to 243 ways to win, with a 96.65% RTP, an 8,000× max win and tiered free spins that unlock as you trigger the bonus more often. The sequel is busier on screen and has more feature variety, while the original is simpler. Both are rated medium volatility. Compare them in our Thunderstruck and Thunderstruck II reviews.
Are old Microgaming slots still fair?
Yes. Any version of a former Microgaming slot offered at a UKGC-licensed casino must meet current Gambling Commission technical standards, including independent testing of its random number generator and maths, regardless of when it was first released. Older games were also updated to follow UK design rules, such as no autoplay and a minimum 2.5-second spin. Fair does not mean favourable: each game has a house edge. Our page on how slots are tested in the UK explains the process.
Which Microgaming slot is best for a small budget?
On verified figures, Agent Jane Blonde Returns is the only low-volatility game in the classic set, with a 96.6% RTP on 15 paylines, so it tends to give steadier, smaller returns. Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck II, Avalon and Lucky Leprechaun are rated medium. Break da Bank Again and Book of Oz are high volatility and can drain a small balance quickly. Whatever you choose, a lower stake stretches a budget further. Our low volatility slots page lists similar games from other studios.
Can I play Microgaming slots for free in the UK?
Many UK casinos offer demos of the former Microgaming catalogue, but you must verify your age first, a rule in force since May 2019. Demo play uses credits, so nothing real is won or lost, and short sessions are random. It is best used to learn how features such as the Thunderstruck II bonus tiers work.
