Betfred slots: the online operator

Betfred slots online are run by Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited, UKGC account 39544, while the high-street shops are licensed to a separate company, Done Brothers (Cash Betting) Limited. Betfred was founded in Salford in 1967 and is still owned by co-founder Fred Done. Here is how the online and shop sides differ for a slot player, and how to check the licence.

Who runs Betfred slots online

Betfred’s website and apps are operated by Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited. Its Gambling Commission entry shows account 39544, a head office on Europort Avenue in Gibraltar, and one remote licence number (039544-R-319290-010) covering five activities, all active since 1 November 2014: casino, bingo, real-event betting, virtual-event betting and pool betting. Slots are part of the remote casino licence.

The register lists three domains for the company: betfred.com, betfred.mobi and oddsking.com. That last one is a sister brand run by the same licensee.

A Salford bookmaker since 1967

Betfred grew out of a single betting shop opened in Salford in 1967 by Fred Done and his brother, and Fred Done still owns the business. The company is headquartered in Birchwood, Warrington. It launched its online site, Betfred.com, in 2004, and the product list now runs to sports, casino, live casino, games, bingo, lotto and poker.

Unlike many of the big names in British gambling, Betfred isn’t part of a stock-market-listed group. That doesn’t change the regulatory standard it must meet, which is the same for every licensee, but it does explain why you won’t find it in the same corporate family as Coral, Ladbrokes or Paddy Power.

Betfred shop machines vs Betfred slots online

Because Betfred has a high-street estate, many people first meet its games on a shop terminal. Shop machines and online slots are regulated under different rules, licensed to different companies, and they don’t share an account.

Our page on online slots vs bookies’ machines compares the two in more depth, and our explainer on online slots vs pub fruit machines covers the pub equivalents.

Reading the Betfred slot lobby

Betfred lists casino and games as separate products, which is common among bookmakers: the split usually separates quick instant-play games from the wider slot catalogue and live tables. We haven’t verified the current studios, jackpots or game counts, so open the lobby filters to see what is live.

For any slot you open, three numbers deserve a look before you spin: the RTP shown in the help screen, the maximum win, and the stake range. If the game has a jackpot, our daily jackpot slots and jackpot slots guides explain the different types.

Turning a monthly budget into Betfred deposit limits

Most licensed sites let you set daily, weekly and monthly deposit limits. If you think in terms of a monthly entertainment budget, it helps to translate that into each window so one day can’t eat the whole month.

Monthly budgetWeekly limitDaily limit
£40£10£5
£100£25£10
£200£50£20

Setting all three means the tightest one bites first. Lowering a limit takes effect immediately; raising one comes with a cooling-off period, which is deliberate. Our guide on setting deposit limits shows the usual menu path on British sites, and our session budget guide helps you split each limit into sessions.

Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited’s regulatory actions

The register lists two actions against the online licensee:

  • 20 May 2025: a £240,000 financial penalty for a breach of licence condition 2.3.1 on technical standards, found during an investigation into a key event. The register notes that the licensee self-reported the breach and took immediate remedial action.
  • 30 June 2026: a settlement with a £900,000 payment in lieu of a financial penalty, a public statement and Commission costs, following a licence review that found failings in remote customer interaction under social responsibility code provision 3.4.3.

We list these because they are on the public record. The Commission’s statements give the detail, and reading them is part of checking any slot site’s licence.

UK rules on every Betfred slot

Online slots at Betfred follow the Commission’s game design rules: no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no celebrating a win smaller than your stake, and your net position shown on screen. Bonus buy features are switched off for British players, and since 19 January 2026 bonus wagering can’t exceed 10x, nor can a casino offer require a sports bet. Our page on losses disguised as wins explains why the celebration rule exists.

Safer gambling tools at Betfred

Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited must offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion and take part in GAMSTOP. New customers must be prompted to set a deposit limit during sign-up, a requirement since 31 October 2025. Shop customers can ask staff about self-exclusion from betting shops, which is a separate scheme from GAMSTOP.

Free, confidential support is available from the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, GamCare and NHS gambling clinics. Our gambling support guide lists them all.

How to check Betfred on the register

  1. Find the operator name in the footer of betfred.com; for online play it should be Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited.
  2. Search that name or account 39544 on the Gambling Commission public register.
  3. Check Casino (Remote) shows as Active.
  4. Open the domain names tab and confirm the address you use is listed.
  5. Read the regulatory actions tab and the public statements linked from it.
  6. For a shop query, search Done Brothers (Cash Betting) Limited instead, as it holds the premises licences.

Compare Betfred slots with other high-street names

If you are comparing bookmaker brands, Ladbrokes gives new customers up to 500 spins (50 a day for 10 days, 10p each) after playing £10 on slots, and Coral gives 100 spins at 10p after a £10 slot bet; both pay spin winnings without wagering, though some e-wallet and prepaid deposits are excluded. PlayOJO gives 80 spins at 10p on Big Bass Bonanza on a £10 first deposit, also with no wagering. All are 18+ and terms apply; our real money slots guide puts them in context.

We don’t partner with Betfred. Ladbrokes and Coral are the other big high-street bookmaker brands with online slot offers we have checked; PlayOJO is a slots-first alternative. 18+, terms apply.

Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited (Entain). If you already hold an account with one Entain brand, you may not be able to open a new account with another; check the terms before signing up.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns Betfred?

Betfred is owned by Fred Done, who co-founded the business with his brother in Salford in 1967. It remains a privately owned company, headquartered in Birchwood, Warrington. Online, the brand is operated by Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited under UKGC account 39544, while the betting shops are run by Done Brothers (Cash Betting) Limited. Betfred went online in 2004 with Betfred.com. You can confirm both companies on the Gambling Commission’s register; our guide to checking a slot site’s licence explains how.

Is Betfred licensed for online slots?

Yes. Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited holds an active remote casino licence from the UK Gambling Commission, effective since 1 November 2014, which covers Betfred’s online slots. The same licence number also covers bingo, real and virtual-event betting and pool betting. The register lists betfred.com, betfred.mobi and oddsking.com as the company’s domains. A UKGC licence brings British rules on stake limits, game design, verification and safer gambling. Our UKGC glossary entry explains what the regulator oversees.

Can I use my Betfred shop account online?

Shop gambling and online gambling are licensed to different Betfred companies, so a shop terminal and an online account are separate things with separate balances. Some bookmakers offer cards or apps that link the two for certain products, but whether Betfred does, and on what terms, is something to confirm with its help pages. For slot players the key difference is the rules: online slots allow up to £5 a spin for over-25s, while shop machines have their own category limits. Our page on online slots vs bookies’ machines covers this.

Has Betfred been fined?

The register shows two actions against Betfred’s online licensee, Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited. In May 2025 it received a £240,000 penalty for a technical standards breach that it self-reported. In June 2026 it agreed a settlement including a £900,000 payment in lieu of a penalty, after a licence review found failings in remote customer interaction. Each case has a public statement on the Commission’s site. We report this neutrally; reading the actions tab is part of choosing a slot site.

Is Oddsking linked to Betfred?

Yes. The Gambling Commission register lists oddsking.com as a domain of Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited, the same company that runs Betfred online. That makes the two sister brands under one licence. Each still has its own website and its own account registration. If you self-exclude from one, check whether the exclusion extends to the other; if you want a single step that covers every British-licensed online site, register with GAMSTOP, which is free and lasts for six months, one year or five years.

What is the maximum bet on Betfred slots online?

The maximum stake is £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 per spin for players aged 18 to 24, as for every online slot offered in Great Britain. The £5 cap began on 9 April 2025 and the £2 cap on 21 May 2025. A particular game may have a lower top stake, and an active bonus can impose its own lower maximum. Betting shop machines have separate category-based limits. Our page on UK slot stake limits explains how sites confirm your age band.

Are Betfred slots fair?

Slots offered by a UKGC licensee must use a random number generator that has been independently tested, and the game’s published RTP must match how it actually pays over the long run. The register shows a 2025 penalty against Betfred’s online licensee for a technical standards breach, which the company self-reported and fixed. Fair doesn’t mean favourable: every slot has a house edge, so losses are the expected outcome over time. Our guide on how slots are tested in the UK explains the certification process.

How do I self-exclude from Betfred?

For online play, use the self-exclusion option in your Betfred account’s safer gambling settings, or register with GAMSTOP to block every British-licensed online gambling site at once. For betting shops, ask staff about the multi-operator self-exclusion scheme for shops, which is separate from GAMSTOP. Exclusions can’t be lifted early. Our self-exclusion guide walks through the online steps, and the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 can help you plan the shop side too.

Gambling can be addictive. Free, confidential help is available 24 hours a day from the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133. Get support from GamCare or NHS gambling support, or block yourself from all UK-licensed gambling sites with GAMSTOP.
