Gemix slot is Play’n GO’s 2014 cascading gem game on a 7x7 grid, where clusters of five or more matching symbols pay and a Crystal Charge meter unlocks grid-changing effects. Its top RTP is 96.83% and volatility is medium, and instead of free spins it moves you through three worlds, each with its own wild behaviour.
Top RTP is 96.83%, with lower versions in circulation, so check the paytable first.
Clusters of five or more touching symbols pay, then cascade to make room for new ones.
A full Crystal Charge meter fires one of four effects, and Super Charge can triple a round’s wins.
Three worlds (Miner’s, Princess’ and Wizard’s) each bring a different kind of wild.

Gemix slot in plain terms
Gemix feels closer to a puzzle game than a fruit machine. There are no reels in the usual sense: 49 gems fill a square grid, matching groups vanish, and new gems fall into the gaps. Every win also charges a crystal in the centre of the screen, and when it is full something happens to the grid. Clear enough patterns and you move to a new world with different rules for wilds.
The result is a game with more going on per spin than most medium-volatility slots, but without a classic free spins round. Value comes from long chains of cascades in a single paid round, helped by the charge effects and the world wilds.
How Gemix cluster pays and cascades work
A win needs five or more matching symbols touching horizontally or vertically; diagonals don’t count. This is the cluster pays system, and bigger clusters pay more per symbol. Once a win is paid, the cascade sequence runs:
Winning symbols are paid and removed from the grid.
Symbols above drop down to fill the gaps.
New symbols fall in from the top to refill the grid.
Any new clusters are paid and the process repeats.
The round ends when no new cluster forms.
All of that happens for one stake. A single paid round can include five or six cascades, which is how a medium-volatility game still produces the occasional strong result. Our cascading reels entry explains the mechanic across other games.
How to play Gemix
Open the paytable to check the RTP version and the cluster sizes each gem pays for.
Set your stake and press spin; the whole grid drops in at once.
Watch clusters pay and cascade until no more wins form.
Note the Crystal Charge meter filling with each winning symbol.
When it is full and cascades stop, one of four charge effects fires.
Track the world patterns at the side of the screen to see how close you are to the next world.
Crystal Charge: the four Gemix effects
Every winning symbol adds to the Crystal Charge meter. When it is full and the cascades have stopped, one of four effects changes the grid to try to create new wins.
Effect
What it does
Chain Lightning
Two opposite corner symbols fire arcs that turn the symbols they hit into a corner symbol
Light Beam
Beams fire across the row and column of one symbol, transforming what they cross
Crystal Warp
One chosen symbol and all its matches are swapped into other symbols
Nova Blast
A symbol explodes, clearing its neighbours and leaving a core of the same symbol
None of these promises a win, but each tends to create larger matching groups, and any wins they make cascade as normal.
Super Charge: tripling a round
If the meter is already full and you keep winning on enough further symbols before the cascades end, Super Charge activates. Every win in that round, including later cascades, is multiplied by 3. It can happen once per round.
Here is how that plays out at a 50p stake. If the cascades after Super Charge add £1.20 in wins, they pay £3.60 instead. That uplift is the closest Gemix comes to a free spins multiplier, and it is why the best rounds are long chains rather than single big clusters. Our guide to how multipliers work covers multipliers more generally.
The three Gemix worlds and their wilds
Each world has three patterns to clear on the grid. Clear all three and you move to the next world and collect the World Bonus, which grows with your wins during that round. Wilds usually appear on non-winning rounds and are removed when they form part of a win, except where noted.
World
Wild behaviour
Miner’s
Up to 10 wilds drop in from the top and replace regular symbols
Princess’
An edge symbol turns wild and spreads to neighbours until it reaches another edge
Wizard’s
Up to 8 sticky wilds appear; they don’t fall or get removed by wins and last one round or until Crystal Charge fires
The Wizard’s world is the most interesting for long chains, because sticky wilds keep contributing to new clusters through every cascade in that round.
Gemix RTP and volatility in practice
At 96.83%, Gemix’s top RTP is one of the higher figures in Play’n GO’s range. The theoretical cost is £3.17 per £100 staked over the long run. Some casinos run lower versions, so confirm the figure in the paytable.

Medium volatility means results stay closer to those averages than on a high-volatility grid game, with a steadier stream of small cluster wins. Losses are still the likely outcome over time.
Gemix and the UK slot rules
Cascades are part of one paid round, and UK rules still apply to the round as a whole: at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no autoplay or turbo, and a stake limit of £5 from age 25 or £2 from 18 to 24. There is no feature to buy, and demo play needs age verification first. The net position display under the grid helps here, as long cascade chains can make it hard to keep track of a session.
Gemix vs other 7x7 and cluster pays slots
Play’n GO later released Gemix 2, which builds on the original’s worlds and charge ideas with its own maths. Among reviewed grid games, these are the closest comparisons:
Reactoonz is the obvious stablemate, with a charge meter of its own but much higher volatility. Gemix is the calmer option of the four. More grid games are on our cluster pays slots page.
Gemix pros, cons and who it suits
Advantages
Top RTP of 96.83%
Medium volatility on a grid slot
Charge effects and worlds give variety
Long cascade chains for a single stake
Drawbacks
No free spins round
Lower RTP versions exist
World progress can feel slow
Busy screen can hide how a session is going
Gemix suits players who enjoy grid mechanics and a sense of progression but don’t want the extreme swings of newer cluster games. Players who prefer a classic free spins bonus may find it lacks a clear high point.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Gemix?
Gemix has a top RTP of 96.83%, meaning a theoretical return of £96.83 for every £100 staked over the long run. Play’n GO also offers lower versions, and the casino decides which one to run, so the figure in the game’s paytable is the one that applies. The top version is one of the higher RTPs among grid slots. Over a short session your results will vary widely. Our page on what the highest RTP slot in the UK is puts it in context.
Does Gemix have free spins?
No, Gemix has no traditional free spins round. Its features are cascades, the Crystal Charge meter with four grid-changing effects, Super Charge, which triples a round’s wins, and three worlds that each bring a different type of wild. Long chains of cascades within a single paid round do the job a free spins feature would in other games. If free spins are what you are after, see our free spins slots page for games built around that bonus.
How does Crystal Charge work in Gemix?
Crystal Charge fills as you win: every winning symbol adds to the meter. When it is full and cascades have stopped, one of four effects fires: Chain Lightning, Light Beam, Crystal Warp or Nova Blast. Each changes symbols on the grid to try to create new clusters, which then cascade as normal. If you keep winning after the meter is full, Super Charge can triple all wins in that round. Our reel modifier entry explains how grid-changing effects fit into slot maths.
What are the worlds in Gemix?
Gemix has three worlds: Miner’s, Princess’ and Wizard’s. Each has three patterns to clear on the grid; clearing them all moves you to the next world and pays the World Bonus, which grows with your wins in that round. Every world has its own wilds: falling wilds in Miner’s, spreading wilds in Princess’ and up to eight sticky wilds in Wizard’s. Everything the worlds pay is already included in the published RTP. Our slot features guide covers wild types in more detail.
Is Gemix high or low volatility?
Gemix is a medium-volatility slot. Small cluster wins arrive fairly often, cascades and charge effects can extend a round, and Super Charge provides occasional larger results. That makes it steadier than most modern 7x7 games, which tend to be high volatility. It still loses money over time on average, so budget for that. If you want something calmer still, our low volatility slots page lists reviewed options with verified figures.
What is the difference between Gemix and Reactoonz?
Both are Play’n GO 7x7 cluster games with a charge meter, but they behave differently. Gemix is medium volatility with a 96.83% top RTP and moves you through three worlds with different wilds. Reactoonz is high volatility with a 96.51% RTP and a 4,570x max win, built around alien characters and a Gargantoon feature. Reactoonz has bigger swings; Gemix is the steadier ride. See our Reactoonz review for its features.
Is there a Gemix 2?
Yes, Play’n GO released Gemix 2 as a sequel to the original. It keeps the gem theme, grid and world progression but changes the features and maths, so the original’s 96.83% top RTP and medium volatility don’t automatically apply. Check the sequel’s own paytable before playing. Our guide to how slot sequels differ explains what usually changes between an original and its follow-up, from RTP and volatility to max win.
Can I play Gemix for free in the UK?
Yes, many licensed UK casinos offer Gemix in demo mode, but only after age verification, which has been required since May 2019. The demo runs the same grid, charge effects and worlds, so it is a good way to see how cascades and Crystal Charge work before staking. Demo credits can’t be withdrawn. Because the game has several layers, a demo is especially useful for learning what the side panels mean. Our demo mode entry has more.
