The shop estate is licensed separately. The online licence is the one that covers the slots you play on the website or app, and the UKGC regulates both.
From a 1934 bookmaker to evoke plc
William Hill started taking bets in 1934 and grew into one of the best-known bookmakers on British high streets. Its online casino came much later, as the business followed customers onto the internet, a story told in our history of online slots in the UK. In July 2022 the non-US William Hill business was bought by 888 Holdings, which later renamed itself evoke plc.
Industry reports say a takeover of evoke by Bally's Intralot was agreed in June 2026. Bally's Intralot already owns Gamesys, which runs Jackpotjoy and Virgin Games. Until any deal completes and licences change, the register entry above is the one that applies; check it again if you read about a change of ownership.
888casino runs on a different UK licence (888 UK Limited, account 39028), so the group's brands don't all share one account. That distinction matters for the 2025 penalty described below.
The 2025 penalty: spotting customers across group brands
The register lists one current action. On 7 August 2025 the Commission fined WHG (International) Limited £82,687 for failing to comply with paragraph 3 of social responsibility code provision 3.9.1. That rule requires a licensee to take reasonable steps to identify customers who also hold accounts with another company in the same group.
Why it matters to a slot player: if you have accounts at two brands in one group, the operator should be able to see your combined activity when assessing risk, for example spending at William Hill and at a sister casino in the same week. The Commission noted that the company found and reported the breach itself, fixed it and co-operated fully.
Older actions no longer listed on the register's actions tab appear in earlier published records: a £6.2 million penalty in 2018 and a £19.2 million group settlement in March 2023.
Planning a William Hill slots session within the stake caps
Customers who come to a bookmaker's casino from sports betting are used to choosing one stake for one event. Slots work differently: the stake repeats every few seconds. The table shows how one £100 budget stretches at different stakes, with the theoretical cost on a 96% RTP game.

The theoretical cost of staking £100 is the same at every level, but at higher stakes the money is staked in far fewer spins, the swings are bigger and £100 can disappear in a minute. Most players lose money over time. Our low stake slots and bankroll management guides explain how to choose.
Shop machines and online slots are not the same
Many William Hill customers know the gaming machines in its shops. Online slots follow a different rulebook: the £5 and £2 per-spin caps, a 2.5-second minimum spin, no autoplay and a running net position on screen. Machine stakes and speeds in betting shops are regulated under separate rules, while online games follow the UK slot game design rules. Our comparison of online slots and bookies machines covers the differences.
Safer gambling tools for William Hill customers
Because one William Hill account covers betting, casino and bingo, a single deposit limit caps the money available for all of them. Time-outs and self-exclusion are also available, and GAMSTOP blocks all UK-licensed online gambling sites at once, including other evoke brands. The National Gambling Helpline is free and confidential on 0808 8020 133, at any hour.

Frequently asked questions
Who owns William Hill?
William Hill's non-US business has been owned by evoke plc, formerly 888 Holdings, since July 2022. In Great Britain its online casino, betting and bingo are run by WHG (International) Limited under UK Gambling Commission account 39225. Industry reports say an agreed takeover of evoke by Bally's Intralot was announced in June 2026; check the register for any change in licence holder. William Hill's sister brands include 888casino and Mr Green. See our 888casino profile and other UK slot site brands.
Is William Hill licensed by the UK Gambling Commission?
Yes, WHG (International) Limited holds UK Gambling Commission account 39225, with remote casino, bingo, real-event betting, virtual-event betting and pool betting licences active since 1 November 2014, plus a gambling software licence since March 2015. The register lists williamhill.com as its single domain. If you reach a site using the William Hill name at another address, don't deposit. Our guides on checking a slot site's licence and spotting unlicensed sites explain how to check.
Why was William Hill fined in 2025?
WHG (International) Limited was fined £82,687 on 7 August 2025 for not taking reasonable steps to identify customers who also hold accounts with other companies in its group, as required by the social responsibility code. That rule helps operators see a customer's combined gambling across sister brands. The Commission noted that the company spotted and reported the breach itself, put it right and co-operated. Our guide to affordability checks explains how operators assess customers' gambling.
Is William Hill the same company as 888casino?
They belong to the same group, evoke plc, but trade on different UK licences. William Hill's online business is run by WHG (International) Limited, account 39225, while 888casino is run by 888 UK Limited, account 39028. That means separate accounts, terms and complaint routes, although group policy shapes both. The 2025 penalty against William Hill concerned identifying customers who hold accounts across such group companies. Read our 888casino profile for its details.
When was William Hill founded?
William Hill was founded in 1934 by the bookmaker of the same name, and it became one of the most familiar betting shop brands in Britain before moving online. Its current online licence holder, WHG (International) Limited, has held UK remote licences since 1 November 2014, when the present licensing system for overseas-based operators took effect. Ownership passed to 888 Holdings, now evoke plc, in July 2022. Our history of online slots in the UK sets that in context.
What is the maximum stake on William Hill slots?
UK law caps online slot stakes at £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 per spin for players aged 18 to 24, and William Hill applies these caps like every licensed site. Individual games may set lower limits. At £2 a spin, a £100 budget covers 50 spins; at 20p it covers 500. A lower stake doesn't change the house edge, but it slows how fast money is staked. Read our UK slot stake limits explainer and what stake to play.
Are William Hill online slots the same as the machines in its shops?
No, they are covered by different rules. Online slots in Great Britain have a £5 or £2 stake cap depending on age, a minimum spin time of 2.5 seconds, no autoplay or turbo, and must show your net position. Machines in betting shops are regulated under separate machine rules with their own stake and prize limits. The games may share themes or titles, but the experience and maths can differ. Our comparison of online slots and bookies machines explains how.
Will the Bally's Intralot deal change my William Hill account?
Not straight away. Industry reports say an agreed takeover of evoke by Bally's Intralot was announced in June 2026, but a change in group ownership doesn't by itself move your account. Your contract stays with WHG (International) Limited unless the licence holder changes, and any such change would appear on the Gambling Commission's register. If you are told about a transfer, check that the new company is licensed. Our guide to checking a slot site's licence shows how.
How do I take a break from William Hill?
You can set a time-out, deposit limit or self-exclusion in the safer gambling section of your William Hill account, or by contacting customer support. Because one account covers sport, casino and bingo, these tools apply across all three. GAMSTOP blocks every UK-licensed online gambling site in one step, including other evoke brands. Anyone worried about their gambling can call the National Gambling Helpline free on 0808 8020 133, day or night. Read our guide on taking a break from slots.
Gambling can be addictive. Free, confidential help is available 24 hours a day from the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133. Get support from GamCare or NHS gambling support, or block yourself from all UK-licensed gambling sites with GAMSTOP.
